I’m not as connected to campus as I used to be, but I haven’t heard anything about this. Anyone know the details?
clt says if Belk tower can come down, anything is possible.
This says arches are being restored as part of larger project.
This project will replace the stairs in their entirety, restore the entryway and arches to extend their longevity, and address drainage-related issues underneath.
Could try to get federal funding by offering Trump a new Kennedy Center to put his name on since the last one didn’t work out ![]()
clt says he is good at turning things green
CHP tearing down our Belk Tower was his last big FU to our university!
Only one of many last FU’s to the university. The no medical school letter I believe came after the Belk Tower being demolished.
Rain runoff appears to be the issue. It’s coming down, and it can’t be preserved or rebuilt in a similar fashion, the university says. I’m not an engineer, but you can’t tell me there’s literally no way to rebuild something that mimics it pretty well.

clt says let our award winning engineering school figure it out
Bonnie Cone had a CAN DO attitude when the school faced closure. The bureaucratic administration that has ran UNC Charlotte over the last 20 years have the worst CAN’T DO attitude when encountering an inconvenience.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist, however, I have a conspiracy type theory about this. I think this is being done to at least change the exterior appearance of the building so that it no longer looks like the building in which two students were killed. Of course the building will still be there, but looking at it won’t trigger bad memories of that horrible day.
Official announcement posted yesterday.
And recent Niner Times piece.
clt says knock down the building and build a 3-4 story replacement incorporating the canopy into the design
I think you are exactly right. That is what is wrong on an entire university level. It seems like no one on this campus, from professors to administrators to students, actually wants to accomplish anything. It seems we spend more effort on why things can’t be done than actually figuring out how to get things done.
I guarantee you that there are several alternate places to construct a replica of this signature structure on campus that would be unaffected by the ‘runoff’ issues. There are also several ways to alter the replicas to alleviate the ‘runoff’ issues. The current structure has done fine for 65 years.
Are you telling me that they were able to figure out how to construct this with 1961 technology, but we can’t figure out how to preserve or reconstruct it in 2026? We may need to consider shutting down our engineering school if this is the case. As an alum with an engineering degree, this is embarrassing.
They’re lying for the reason I stated earlier. They just don’t want to admit this is what’s going on.
That may be the case, but I doubt it personally.
Either way, the articles are full of excuses that make our University sound incompetent. They should have a solid plan in place to replace/relocate/refurbish the structure in place BEFORE announcing plans to tearing them down.
We basically said “We’re tearing this down. We can’t do this or this or this, but we will figure out something, …maybe?”
I don’t disagree.
If they cannot keep the building intact build bigger and better.
surely the canopy could be recreated in some place on campus as part of a decorative memorial or something.
Well, they did have a plan in place, which makes this about face baffling. Just need to say they can’t afford to complete the entire project at this time.
Glad to know I am not the only one that has figured out we are a very complacent university. We have been successful in spite of ourselves, not because of what we do. If we were a motivated university, I can only imagine where we could be today.
