La Sall Post Game

KJ has a long way to go to be as good as a lot of big men we’ve had.
No kidding. Let’s look at just this year.

Jones: Min- 21, PPG- 7.5, FG%- 56%, Rebs- 5.5, As- .6, Blks- 1.9, TO- 1.1
Sherrill: Min- 20, PPG- 6.9, FG%- 49%, Rebs- 3.5, As- .3, Blks- .6, TO- 1.3
Jones leads in every category.

Maxiell as a Freshman, 55% FG, 7 reb, 1.5 blocks!
Let’s look at where Sherrill is at the end of the year. He’s still developing. I really hope this game isn’t just a one time thing. I’d be really surprised if he doesn’t put up double figures several times again.
Sherrill has had two really good games in a row, and would have had 3 had the refs not strapped him with 3 ridiculous offensive foul calls against the Dukes. He had 8 points in 14 minutes at Duquesne despite that. He also did a really good job on defense guarding Murray Saturday night, who has a 3"+ size advantage over KJ. He got two quick fouls on Murray in the 2nd overtime to foul him out of the game.

No one is saying Sherrill won’t develop into a stellar big man, but best we’ve ever had? We have a guy with his jersey on the wall of the Boston Celtics. Let’s be serious here.

Let’s not heap unreal expectations onto a guy b/c our season is rough.

I will say KJ looks like he has the skill to be one of the better big men we have had in a while and more importantly he seems to have the attitude to be a great player. That no fear I am going to take you attitude that will only grow as he plays more. His attempt to take it to the rim and try and jump over the dude saturday was awesome. I wish Braz had KJ’s mental makeup at this point.

But best ever? I dunno about that. He is still WAY behind some big men we have had. Cornbread, Jarvis, Curt all come to mind - and at this point I would put him behind Kelvin, Cam, maybe Odom and I am sure one or two more I am missing.

We lost again, what’s new?

Since we aren’t allowed to blame the players, coaches, or officials, I’m going to blame Judy’s hair.

I don’t buy the ā€œwe’re racing a car with three wheelsā€ argument. We’ve got a full car. Problem is, things break and tires get worn out. We don’t have replacements when something wears out, we have to hope that the car can continue on with what it’s got.

If we have any depth at all, we probably win last night, and win handidly. Maybe I’m blind and wearing green tinted glasses, but I’m seeing improvement from a lot of players that gives me hope for next year and beyond.

Nice to see Major get fired up at the officials, shows the team he’s willing to fight for them. But he didn’t put forth his best effort last night either.

As for whether or not to foul when you’re up three with a few seconds to go…

Now that I’ve cooled off, I believe we made the right choice. Our ballhandlers are suspect, either Deuce would’ve gotten trapped, or Derrio would’ve done his signature jump-and-hope technique, and La Salle could’ve easily gotten the ball back. Even if we were able to draw the foul, we weren’t hitting our shots from the stripe at that point, either.

However, the little white guy was on the floor for ONE REASON. Send Dewhurst or JB out there to shadow the guy. Don’t put up a zone when we’re up three with seconds to go. Guard their shooters tight and don’t give up an open three!

We weren’t hitting our FTs when it mattered.

I’d say closer to 5k at most

No, there were more than 5000 for sure, but not 7000 in the seats. After 15 seasons of ā€œestimationsā€, I’d say there were ~5800-6200 in the seats Saturday night. The gen. public side was much more filled in the upper deck than it has been this season.

WOW - wtf was I thinking??? How did I miss him?

Judy’s hair was not in the building so it could not have been that.

That’s all I’m trying to say. Hey, I hope he does become the best post player ever. But labeling him that, and that he’s a NBA first rounder, after one game is a bit crazy. He attempted 18 fts, in a double OT game, against LaSalle! That’s a huge anomaly.

Like Contemptor said, don’t take it personal. People are pulling for Deuce. Just saying he’s got a lot of room for improvement.

There’s more than just the FG% and KA’s 3 point %. You ignore the assists/to ratio. He’s dead last. That’s got to account for something when you’re discussing PGs. He’s the 5th highest in the whole league for total TOs committed.

You mention his #s are right there with the elite PGs in the league. But he’s behind his own teammate. He averages less points, less assists and has a higher A/T ratio than Derrio.

Further, you’ve left off some other PGs from your list. What about Carl Jones at St Joes? 18 PPG, FG% 41%, Ast 3.2, TO 2.3
TJ McConnell 11 PPG, FG% 53%, Ast 4.7, TO 1.8
Norm its all good never personal as long as its respectful which you are.

Carl Jones plays the 2 langston galloway plays the pg for them

Tj mcc imo would be in the top 5 also Deuce’s ppg is higher and reb are higher and Ft%

Would have included Derrio but I am comparing kids who play exclusively PG ,but Derrio is also producing overall at commendable levels

I believe we have some very good players on this team and I believe they will lead us to back to respectability in the very near future.
You know better than me about St Joes’ players. Just looking at Jones as being 6’0" and leads the team in assists. While Galloway is 6’3". My guess is Deuce will pick up Jones, and Derrio will pick up Galloway on D.

Totally agree with you that our guards are quality guards though, and that we still haven’t figured out how to best utilize them.

The debate on whether to foul when up 3 hinges on the other alternative being extended defense to prevent an easy 3-pt shot and making it a very low percentage shot (either due to guarding all shooters, practically double-teaming a dead-eye shooter, or forcing a post player to hit it). This can be done effectively without risking a foul, provided the refs aren’t going overboard calling that ridiculous sideways jump into the defender foul (beware if playing Duke or Villanova in this scenario). Playing a zone in that situation and not forcing them to use clock getting the ball up the floor strikes me as really bad decisions. I think our end-game defense could use some work (both coaches and players).

Is this what I can expect for the rest of the year after every loss: a massive referendum on Coach Major, the program, our players, judy’s hair?

Ughhh. I’ll pass.

We have half a team and a 1st year head coach. Try not to read too much into anything. Maybe some individual player development and team unity at best. We are officially in reboot mode folks.

NinerAdvocate is right.

But when we win, people seem to rave about coach major… hmmmm

Well, at least our guys will be in great shape to not get winded as they win 4 straight to win the conference tourney.

FTFY.

You’re just being particular. That’s exactly what the 3-wheel-car analogy means.
