Langston Wertz needs to get a clue

toĀ·ken Audio pronunciation of "token" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (tkn) n.
  1. Something serving as an indication, proof, or expression of something else; a sign: ā€œTears are queer tokens of happinessā€ (Eugene O’Neill). See Synonyms at sign.
  2. Something that signifies or evidences authority, validity, or identity: The scepter is a token of regal status.
  3. A distinguishing feature or characteristic.
    4. One that represents a group, as an employee whose presence is used to deflect from the employer criticism or accusations of discrimination.
  4. A keepsake or souvenir.
  5. A piece of stamped metal used as a substitute for currency: subway tokens.

Mike assumed that CLT was using the term in the context of the above bold texted definition. In that context, that term has been and can be used as a racial slur. I have no idea if CLT meant it in that way however.

Hey mike, put your journalistic instincts to work and find out just one other post where CLT has even been close to racist to back up your assertion that he is using the word token in a racially charged way.

Token could have just as easily meant Tar Heel. I don’t know what race your boy Wertz is, his name doesn’t scream out any race to me.

I don’t know what clt meant either, however I think you’d be hard pressed to argue he meant Tarhole since there more than a few fans of the holes that work there already. Olson, Poole, the Green’s to name a few.

What the hell did CLT say? It can’t be from ā€œtokenā€ If that’s racists then that’s a new one for me.

The implication VA is that ā€œtokenā€ means Wertz is a token minority who only has the job because of his race.

My thought is he has the job because he’s a Tarhole jock sniffer. They like those at the observer.

Thank you Mr. Geragos or is it Mr. Cochran?

Perhaps the picture the Observer puts next to a writers name could tip you off to what race he is.

You say that like I buy the observer. I don’t read it.

I hope that what CLT meant by token was that Langston Wertz is a Tar Heel fan plain and simple. Basically as a columnist he writes something for a very pro ACC Newspaper, if he slights a non-ACC school, the newspaper can deflect criticisms by saying that ā€œthe opinions expressed only reflect the writers and not that of the newspaper.ā€ In that sense he is a token because he writes what the newspaper wants him to write, but when others get p’d at the Observer the Observer deflects the criticism by saying it’s his opinion and not necessarily their own.

Mike P. I’m not sold on your argument that it’s not the Observers practice to say ā€œDave Telep says that Beasley has committed to Charlotte.ā€ If Mr. Wertz says that he did not know, that means he is a very uninformed reporter. As a high school sports reporter I think he should be cognizant to the national scene. I could see if Beasley was only a top 100 or even top 50, but he’s a top 5 player in his class. I think Mr. Wertz should be more informed about high school sports and less concerned about reviewing video games.

Besides did you call all the kids on the Carolina’s top 50 recruiting list for football? Highly doubtful, more likely you got it from a recruiting source. Do you really think that Dave Telep does not qualify as a legitimate source of basketball recruiting?

clt writes that wertz is a token b/c of his mediocre writing not b/c of his race.

CLT is a token himself. He makes it evident that this board doesnt discriminate against the mentally handicapped.

Thus blazing a trail for many others to follow…

Thanks for the heads up. If Mike hadn’t raised such a fuss about it I never would have known. I’m not so sure CLT even meant it that way either. That’s the thing with email and the internet, sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s really meant due the lack of voice and facial expressions.

All anyone needs to know is that Langston’s claim to fame is the video game columns he writes. Now THAT’S something he’s qualified to write!

if you look closely, you will notice that tomato is easily confused with token.

What set me off was CLT's racist remark.

Racist? Lighten up Francis.

That, I cannot tolerate.

What are you going to do about it Mike, ask him to lunch?

The implication VA is that "token" means Wertz is a token minority who only has the job because of his race.

Even if that were the implication, it’s not a racist comment. People throw around the word ā€œracistā€ way too much. Racist means you think a race is inferior or superior for some arbitrary reason. CLT said nothing to imply that any race was superior or inferior.

Mike is just looking for a reason to get his panties in a wad.

Didn’t just a few years ago the Observer report that the Stewart twins at USC were going to UNC-CH to play basketball, but it was actually determined that UNC had not in fact offered them scholarships?

People throw around the word "racist" way too much.

Seriously, I’m still trying to figure out how what he said was a racist comment. Everyone loves to play the race card. Mike, instead of trying to put the blame on someone else, how about trying to figure out why Wertz is a such lousy reporter and a Tarhole jocksniffer? Oops, I think I just answered my own question.

Hey Persinger, my man, you are getting mocked bad…as well as you should be. Wertz has more status in this community than anyone on this board, huh? Interesting. Persinger, get lost.
