And yes, it’s on the front. My prediction is that some of you will find fault anyway, on one of a couple of fronts.
Here’s a taste:
“You have the Dukes and UConns and all that. Those are four-year schools where you have to sit on the bench behind seniors and juniors. I just wanted to go somewhere I can get playing time, and I know I can get it in my freshman year.”
Stop whining and post the article all ready.
Geez…
makes me think we were’nt his first choice
but ohh well
Here’s the bottom line. The Observer PROMOTES the acc schools, but Persinger has constantly told us it’s not their responsibility to promote the Niners. That explains the portions Mike says we won’t like. I think most people in Charlotte are used to the Observer’s double standard, so it shouldn’t be a big deal. I can already hear a dook fan tomorow at work… “man, the Observer has done it to you again… They just refuse to give you guys any credit for anything…”. Of course, we are fortunate to get this article, so I’m not complaining.
By the way Mike, thanks for the article… and thanks for the front page.
B) B) B)
I say just read the paper and enjoy. You’re crying the day before it has even come out, get a grip on life! LOL
Thanks alot Mike!

The paragraph before this was;
“The difference with Beasley is his friendship with Charlotte assistant coach Dalonte Hill, an assistant the past two summers for Malone’s D.C. Assault. Beasley said he committed early to Charlotte because he liked the coaching staff and there’s no university he’d rather attend.”
I am going to be an optimist here and say that the quote Mike posted didn’t come out the way Beasley meant it to.
I don’t think he’ll opt to play at another school. My impression is that there’s about a 40% chance we get one year out of him and a 60% chance he never plays college ball unless the NBA raises the minimum age. Just depends on what’s more important to Michael: the money/chance to play at the highest level or further developing his talent at the collegiate level first. Tough call to make for a kid that young.
All the Beas is saying is that he wanted to go somewhere where he can play right away and star. These are the tradeoffs that we have to make, and will make for someone his caliber.
Welcome to Power Forward U.

Nope, giving the story the balance it needs explains the parts I expect you not to like.
And I don’t see covering the ACC in proportion to its quality and interest – especially this year with three of the top five teams in the AP poll in this state – as promoting anyone. We’re covering the news.
PI shows up to say I’m just defending the Observer and making excuses in 5, 4, 3 …
I read the article. It’s disturbing to me and you’ll see why. As for me, keep your Beasleys and give me a Basden or any other player who comes here, is committed to the school and team, loves being here, over some mercenary-sounding dude who couldn’t care less. I don’t care for Beasley’s attitude the same way I dismiss a whore’s approach to life.

I’ll take the talent so long as he doesn’t screw up team chemistry with his own agenda. Having a kid for only one year can leave your program in ruins for the two years following, but we didn’t seem to have any attitude problems from Rodney while he was here.

yes b/c that is so much worse than having a juco kid for only two and getting two a year for the last few years. If he wants to come, come, i’ll take a year, mostly b/c bobby and co. will recruit most likely based as if he will play 0-1 years
Geez!! Some of you would complain if you won the lottery.
Mike and the Observer are doing a good job covering the niners. For me and most niner fans, we appreciate Mike and the great coverage this year from Jena.
Have you guys considered we might get even more coverage if you quit complaining about Mike and the Big O and start appreciating their efforts.
Why don’t you just show Mike and Jena some love and work with them to provide even greater coverage for the team?

How did the team/program do in the 2 years after Rodney. Not so good as I remember.
BTW: My beef is not with the O’s coverage, it’s the topic/subject of this one.
The article is a good one and it really is a microcosm of college hoops today. I don’t have a problem with the “Dukes and UConn’s” comment because those schools have done a whole lot on the court and earned their reputation as elite programs. It’s true.
What I have a problem with is the “one and done-ers” like Iti was supposed to be and like Beasley. If he feels he’s really that good, he should declare for the draft. If not, I hate that he’s holding one of our scholarships hostage. But it’s just the way things are in college ball and have been for almost 10 years since Garnett.
Good article no matter what the consequences.
Are you kidding me? I don’t see any problem with Beasley’s attitude. I’d love to have him here… even if it was only for a year. He sounds like a real player and could be an NBA star… it would be nice to say that he played for us.
Anyone know when the Bojangles shootout is on Charlotte?
Here we go Whiners, Here we Go! Clap, Clap. Here we go Whiners, Here we Go! Clap, Clap.
In all seriousness, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but whoever said folks would complain even if they hit the lottery is correct.
You have to take shots at getting high caliber recruits, even if it doesn’t work out, if you ever want to go from good…to great. Carmelo Anthony? Yeah, he played one year of college ball…look what happened.
How about this one: Forte article
More good work from the Observer as to why kids need to stay in college. You may be ready physically and hoops-wise, but if you aren’t there mentally you can crap it all away.
"You have the Dukes and UConns and all that," he said. "Those are four-year schools where you have to sit on the bench behind seniors and juniors. I just wanted to go somewhere I can get playing time, and I know I can get it in my freshman year."
I guess he missed the whole Luol Deng experience last year. If this kid’s as good as they say, then he can play anywhere, just like Carmelo Anthony. Also, that is one sketchy academic record.
