Lutz apologists where are you...

Originally posted by 49erFan1@Mar 10 2005, 11:30 PM Put Coach K on the sideline and I guarantee we'd have beaten them handily. Guarantee. Put Pitino, Letaio, Soderberg, heck I'd take money on Bill Herion. This is inexcusable.
Uhh, Coach K is arguably the best coach of all time, so you can say that Coach K would do a better job than every coach ever. Lutz beat Letaio once and beat Soderberg twice this year, and has a career 7 wins with 1 loss versus Herion.

What really sucks about message boards is that it is always someone else’s fault! WE, the Charlotte Forty Niners, lost for only the seventh time all year and it sucked for all of us, the fans, the players and my guess most by Coach Lutz.

Get over it. It happens. Our program, regardless of the coach, is not going to win every game. Most teams in the country would not have won yesterday against Memphis. In the last week, we lost three games, one to a top ten team on Sr. night, a second to a team that has gotten hot late on their Sr. night(beat Cincy last night) and a third to a team at home that is a good team and has it’s back to the wall.

Everybody can take blame for losses. Obviously the coach did not have the team motivated enough to rebound like they should. Our players shooting touch was non-existent. Our fans continue to be bandwagon fans and give $'s to the program at one of the lowest levels of any Div. I school in the country. We all have blame to accept.

GET OVER IT and get positive before next week. It will benefit us all!

And you sir have just hit the problem I have right on the head. Lutz does not have this team motivated/focused. Thats what irk me most. It’s in March and you know the deck is stacked and you come out in the 2nd half flatter than 2 day old soda.

With all the noise about Lutz, if you were a Cincy fan you would now be yelling for Hugins scalp. South Florida may not be as bad as a lot of you thought. Where is all the support now. While we were winning, not whining, you were all on the bandwagon. Coach was great, team was great, all was wonderful. Life is not that way. You youngsters will find that you win some and lose some. Life does not always treat you right, but you get up off the floor, dust yourself off, and then do the best you can. Are you trying to tell me that the coach and team did not go into this wanting to do their best. By the way, the whiners must all be straight A students, because you would not accept less from yourself when you demand perfection from your bb team. EJ, I am with you. Whatever happens at NCAA, I will root for the team and I will be in my seat for the next bb season.

SeniorFan,

When have we won anything. It’s been since 1977 since we made a splash. All I want is one sweet 16. One friggin sweet 16. Is that too much to ask for?

We have a week to prepare?

Stranger things have happened in conference tournaments and we may see either USF or Memphis be the extra team in the NCAAs this year which may not bode well for DePaul or some other “bubble teams” out there.

The only thing I’m thankful is that the first 2/3 days we can only work on ourselves. Too often coach puts emphasis on what the other team does. This causes us too overfocus. I’d rather take it one day at a time and work on what we run.

We also need to go primarily man up. We’ve been getting smashed on the boards lately.

good to know some of you are content with being an average program, year in and year out. way to set your expectations and goals high! this season is a complete waste if we bow out in the first round and i'm glad you're okay with that. says a lot about your standards. the fact is that in all the years that lutz has been here, he has yet to play during the 2nd weekend of the ncaa tournament. and before some of you lutz apologists start in with your "look how many other teams never even make the dance or start patting your backs over how lutz always has us in the dance" just spare me so i don't have to reach for a barf bag. we could not win a single game all season and some of you would still find a way to defend lutz. we have no business losing three straight games this time of the year and i don't give a damn who the opponent was. i can excuse the louisville game but not the usf game, nor last night's. home court advantage?? EXCUSE!!!!! having to face memphis in the first game? EXCUSE!!!! short rest for the usf game? EXCUSE!!!! two back-to-back senior nights? EXCUSE!!! the bottom line is that we're a much better team than usf and we're a better team than memphis. we had no business losing to either team. we're now likely going to be right back where we belong in the 8/9 game where we will likely be knocked out in our first game. and if we're not, we'll get the honor of losing by 20+ to a #1 seed. i almost hope it comes at the hands of the tarheels just to finally shut up all the people here who are so envious of the acc.

so when the first weekend of the big dance concludes and the niners are heading back home, why don’t you lutz brown nosers go give them a big welcome for completely blowing what had the potential to be a great season. go have a big parade and congratulate the team on being able to hang another banner that for the premier teams in the country, would never even be hung from the rafters due to the insignificance of just getting in. what a complete joke and what completely low standards our school has and our fans have.

By the way pickaxe, its nice tto see you have been a long time poster.

Wow y’all are something else. I didn’t realize Lutz had a jersey on last night. I can’t believe he went 8-32 in the second half and was the only one on the court. Last I checked basketball was a “TEAM” effort but apparently ALL the blame must lay on the coach. I hope Lutz does leave so that when we get another coach in here and he goes 8-20 his first season, I can read all the posts that say, WAAAA, I wish we had Lutz back, Lutz wasn’t so bad.

Face it fair-weather fairs, if our guys aren’t hitting shots we lose the game, Coach K, Dean Smith, everyone’s new favorite successor Doherty would still lose this game.

EJ I thought missed free throws weren’t the coaches fault. Your shooting guard playing point getting fouled with no calls, I thought all that wasn’t the coaches fault. The fact that Coach K had Duke in the game is why he is the best coach of all time. But enough of Duke. I graduted from UNCC last year and pull very hard for the team even though they are a terror to watch. Fundamentals are terrible, coaching. They run no offense they just heave threes. If we play a team with more talent than us plain and simple we don’t win. That is where coaching comes in. However whn Bobby goes up a against a great Coach ala Calapari its a 2 pt game at half. Who made the half time adjustments. Thats why Lutz sucks. You were talking about Iti not panning out. Its Lutz he cant develop talent. Baldwin, Withers, Eddie, is all raw talent. The only way we win is if we hit 3’s or are playing a team with much less talent. Wake up man Lutz can’t coach. Great recruiter just cant do anything with it.

OK, folks! Let’s run with the “it’s Lutz’ fault” arguement. The next logical step would be for us to fire him. I believe in living in the solution and not the problem. Who do we get? Who do we get worth a damn that is going to “take us to the next level”? What superstar coach who is going to take us to the next level and wants to make what Lutz is making is going to run to UNCC? Face it folks, and I know this is hard to do, we are not a destination program where we will have coaches fallling all over themselves to coach here. We are a stepping stone, just ask Melvin Watkins! Lutz is still and always will be very well respected outside our meager little program. He will continue to be on coaching vacancy radars and will one day leave our meager little program. And then we can look to the Big South or Southern confernce for our next coach.

FACE FACTS!

WE WILL NEVER HAVE THE BUDGET OR NAME TO BE A CONSISTANT TOP 25 TEAM!

And as the way Walter Cronkite used to say

AND THAT’S THE WAY IT IS!

The TEAM lost, coaches included. We better get it fixed, fast. I’m drained. I don’t feel like fighting our own fans today.

Then go get a coach who’ll use us to a sweet 16. After him get another coach who’ll use us to an elite 8. That’s how some of the top programs today have been built, by “stepping stone” coaches. If we don’t make a gamble one day we’ll never get rich. Maybe it doesn’t have to be now, but I’d give Bobby one year in the A-10. No Conference Champ should = New Coach.

I guess the latest trend on this board is to call the people who want this program to break through to the next level fair weather fans. Well, after following this program for 30 years (including the he-who-shall-not-be-named years), I classify as a fair weather fan. That's ridiculous.

Bottom line is that some of us think this program is on the cusp of breaking out making a national impact. Don’t give me the lack of talent excuse. Yes, we don’t get McD AA’s, but as several coaches in CUSA stated this year, Charlotte has the most talented starters in the league. Part of that is gamesmenship, but part of that is truth.

I have never said Bobby should be fired because he shouldn’t. It’s just pretty damn frustrating to watch a very talented team lose to crappy teams (ECU, USF) or get absolutely blown out in the national spotlight (Cincy, Memphis). It’s not who we lose to, it’s how we lose. And you know what, it happens every single year.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. If you think all Charlotte can be is a top 50 program year in and out, finish probably in the top 4 every year in the A-10, being the Others Recieving Votes category most of year, and be a bubble team every year, then you should be very happy right now.

I’m not! I was at the last Final Four Charlotte went to. I was there when Charlotte took down #1 Michigan. I remember the excitement. Charlotte will never be a regular power (ala Duke), but I do think it’s reasonable to expect Charlotte to blow out crappy teams (I don’t care if it’s on the road or not) and I do think it’s reasonable for Charlotte to play well (win or lose) on a more regular basis in the national spotlight. That means competing even if we lose.

Sorry for the rant. I just get tired of everyone who complains getting labeled as a bandwagon fan, a youngster who hasn’t been around for very long, or a fair-weather fan. I would rather be called a dreamer.

Great post.

The team has given up 80+ points in three straight losses.
If anyone is defending any aspect of the team right now, they’re f’n retarded.

I’ll give you this though, you apologists sure do play better defense than the team does.

Ha. Put EJ in the game!

Do you really think we have that much talent? We always get the bottom of the barrel when it comes to recruits and even when we sniff the top (Iti) it doesn't pan out.

Yes, I do think we have that much talent. A preseason Wooden candidate, the conference’s best all-around player and 2-time defensive player of the year, a Juco all-american transfer, the fastest point guard in the country, a really tall guy, and a guy that can shoot three pointers from other time zones. Plenty of talent. No execution.

And I think Lutz has done just well, recruiting wise. Rodney White, Iti, Withers, Grier–all those guys were highly touted recruits. As was J. Zimmerman, but I can’t remember if Lutz or Watkins recruited him. Course I’m not even sure if you’ve even heard of JZ, because you seem to be a lukewarm bandwagon Niners fan who just jumped on in Dec. of 04 and blindly rah-rahs the Niners when it is obvious there are serious problems with the team.

A really tall guy ??? What team in Division one doesn’t have a least one guy that is 6-9 ???

We had 5 days to prepare for Memphus…we all know how that turned out. Lot looking good for the boys in green…and we will be in green cause its hard to imagine getting higher than a nine seed.

What is the answer…we play poor defense and we have a undiciplined offense. The flip side would be we play like NC State and play good defense with a boring offense…that would be hard to watch day in and day out. I dunno…I am down as well as everyone is. Hang in there and lets see where this ride stops.

Go Niners.
