Lutz Live 2-nite

Lutz seemed a little off guard and defensive
I don't really think Lutz was any ruder to the askers than they were to him.
Don't give completely ridiculous answers if you don't want people to 'eye-roll', imho.

Also, the way Lutz handled it tonight is only going to discourage straight-forward, tough questions. You leave yourself open to be mocked by Lutz with no recourse… the guys couldn’t defend themselves, because their mics were muted.

I didn't listen or go to the Lutz Live, but if it was how it is being described, that is ridiculous. Now I see why none of our problems on the court are ever addressed, because; 1. he obviously doesn't think there are any problems, and 2. he doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings

That is a sorry excuse for a response to a very legit question.

DOBA, for him to just shrug his shoulders and say "We won against good teams" is like throwing in the towel.

Pathetic if you ask me.

I personally did not attend or listen to Lutz Live last night, so I admit upfront I am commenting on 2nd hand information.

with that disclaimer in mind…I am disappointed to hear that Lutz gave this response to the question.

Ditto, seems like poor responses, but like silvio I was not there, but if this is true, he's not going to find support if he mocks or gets defensive like that with fans, whether they do it to him first or not. Its called being a bigger man, especially if you are a face of the school.
That's what that response is saying to me. "Hey, I beat Clemson, pat me on the back for my greatness." I hope that's not how Bobby feels, but responding in that way kind of suggests that.
Its disappointing that Lutz responded this way.
Very interesting responses. Reponses and thinking like this make me want another coach.

ā€œWell, the 3 ball is not falling for us right now. Let’s try something else.ā€ Instead we get: ā€œWell, the 3 ball is not falling for us right now…let’s keep heaving it and eventually something has to go in, right?ā€

This is ridiculous.

I did not listen to any of Lutz Live Thursday, but If I am in Lutz position and someone calls in with "sarcasm" or "attitude" in their question I am going to probably answer it in the same tone. Yes he needs to be respectful, but he dosn't have to sit down and take some 20 year old student trying to "show him up" on the radio.
I didn't hear Lutz Live, but if he was condescending in his responses, that is immature of him.
Things were contentious. Both sides were fairly heated.

Man, I read these responses thinking that I missed a REALLY good show.

For everyone who missed it, here is the question and answer in its entirety:

I'm not sure it is debatable. And I hate Dook. Who would you rate ahead of him?

Yes it is easier to coach McD’s All americans, but he didn’t start out with that when he first took over the program. What I think Coach K does better than anybody, is to find players that fit his system and makes them great, at least while they’re at Duke. He almost always has a player that talent wise is not as highly rated than another player, but when you look at that players stats its hard to argue with how good they are. This year is a good example. Demarcus Nelson is their best player but I don’t think he’ll have much NBA success.

I assure you it is debatable if he is THE BEST. I’m sure fans of Pitino, Calhoun, Knight and others would think so anyway. Also, Coach K did not take over a pitiful program. They were in the ACC (huge recruting advantage, even back then) and had a GREAT history already. He simply rekindled it and has kept it going/growing. He obviously has built a great program and is a great recruiter, but to say he is without a doubt THE BEST coach is probably pushing it.

To me, the best measure of a coach is does he get the most out of whatever talent he has? Therefore, it is hard for me to say ā€œwithout a doubtā€ that someone with a roster full of AAs is the best. I would love to see Roy, K, Jim Calhoun, Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Denny Crum, Bobby Knight, etc. trade places with Bobby for one season and see what they would do. I mean, using the other guys players. Do you think those coaches would turn our team into a top 25 team, or even a tourney team. They might, but I’m not certain of it. Also, I feel pretty confident Bobby (even with his shortcomings, no pun intended) would have the Duke/Chapel Hill teams near the top of the country. Why, because I’ve seen him field teams that could compete with those caliber teams, even when he did not have comparable talent. I have not seen Coach K or Roy WITHOUT numerous AA players, so I’m not CERTAIN how well they could handle it.

chisox is probably just waiting on me to blow up, and go on and on about K on this thread…
Basden, White, Withers, Demarco …
with the exception of White they all developed their skills while at Charlotte…if we’re lucky we land 3 star recruits…

Ease up there Sparky! I didn't realize you were an internet psychologist....Get over yourself. The original post was that "Coach K is the best in the business", and I believe that is ATLEAST debatable. If you don't, thats fine, but don't act like it is beyond debate!...You might want to also consider that it is a LITTLE easier to coach a team full of 5-star and MCD's All Americans than it is a team full of 2 and 3 star players! That sometimes makes you look a little better. Ask the folks at Kansas State what just one great player can do for a team. I'm not making excuses for Bobby or saying he is perfect (far from it), but not everyone buys into the "Coach K is the greatest ever" hype!

Being a 3 star or 5 star player has nothing to do with knowing the difference between a good and bad shot. If you’re a 5 star you may make it more often, but that doesn’t make it a good shot. Your the ONE who capitalizes things to get a point across SO I did it too.

with the exception of White they all developed their skills while at Charlotte....if we're lucky we land 3 star recruits...

Bologna, go check out the rivals or scout web page and look at our recruits the last 8 years, we get tons of 3 star recruits its the 4 star that we don’t land enough of.

Good point. I wasn’t looking at it that way. You’re right. But considering it that way I would then say Henry Williams, White, Iti and 50% for getting Beasley.

Seriously though, my position has always been to not criticize Lutz (based on his entire career) on x’s and o’s. I’ve said that if people did want to criticize Lutz on recruiting then I can kind of be supportive of that. However, some people would argue that recruiting has been more about administrations inability to keep our assistants. Then others will argue that it’s not administrations fault that we receive poor donations. My take is that recruiting is what will take us to the next level and not necessarily x’s and o’s.

If fans felt they wanted to get rid of Lutz because they thought we could get a better recruiter then I couldn’t really argue with that. My take is that it would be a gamble. There’s a 50% chance we would get a better recruiter and a 50% chance we wouldn’t.

and there’s a huge difference my friend…3 star recruits are very raw and require development a la coaching…

I can agree with that assessment. I’ll tell you this…regardless of how everyone else feels Beasley would have done wonders for recruiting and the program. Not only would we likely be a top 25 team, but the doors would open easier for other top talent. I just don’t like kids that are one and done, but that’s the price you pay for landing elite players.

If Beasley was here and bought in to the system, which it seems like he has done at KSU, we would be monsters.

I assure you it is debatable if he is THE BEST. I'm sure fans of Pitino, Calhoun, Knight and others would think so anyway.

I noticed you listed some candidates but didn’t pick one. I agree they’re all great coaches but if I had to rank, K would be #1.

Crum and Knight, no longer active coaches. Knight was just at Texas Tech and I’m not sure you would say he had great success. Not saying he is a better coach, but I believe Lutz had a winning record against Crum. I don’t believe anybody has a winning record against K, who has played against him regularly. Dean Smith probably did, but again he is not active.

Pitino:I think he is great. But I don’t think you can rate him ahead of K because of where he chose to coach. Pitino did not take over Louisville with out thinking he could be successful there. In fact, he let it be known he didn’t want to go back to Kentucky.

Caliari: No national championships, hasn’t had success in a top conference.

Calhoun: he would be the closest active coach in my opinion but just hasn’t done it as long as K has.

I didn’t say it was a pitiful program. But he definitely has built it into what it currently is. There other teams in the ACC who can use the huge recruiting advantage but haven’t. Duke did have history but there was a reason they were hiring a new coach, not because they were on top. In my mind Duke had a tougher task being located right beside UNC-CH, which was arguably the best program in the country at the time.

Totally agree. And that’s what puts K over the top in my opinion. Look at some of his team leaders from year to year, and in general, they are not the best athletes in the sport and have not had great success at the next level. But they got much better under his guidance and became legitimate all conference players. I don’t even think the Duke gravy train began until around the Elton Brand era (around '99) so there was roughly 15 years prior to that.

That’s kind of my point. If we would have landed Beasley we would probably be a top 20 team and Lutz would be coaching the same way.

I did not listen to any of Lutz Live Thursday, but If I am in Lutz position and someone calls in with "sarcasm" or "attitude" in their question I am going to probably answer it in the same tone. Ok, let me get this right. You didn’t listen to any of the show yesterday. However, the way I’m reading this, your criticizing ā€œsome 20 year old student trying to ā€œshow him upā€ on the radioā€. How would you know what I was doing? (I’m 25 by the way) I called in with a straight forward question (yes, a hard question) and explained my reason for it, and im trying to show him up? I don’t think so.

Why use UNC-CH in your example? Implying that a CH grad is smarter than a Charlotte grad?
Would you have preferred I use Gardner-Webb or Lees McRae instead? I was not trying to slight anyone.
A national championship with another coach’s recruits and several final fours with hundreds of McDonald All-Americans…your right there is a big difference. He makes one phone call to any H.S. player he wants while we spend years trying to lure that same recruit to Charlotte, that as we know, never comes…
Right, but the point being that they (Williams & K) are BMOCs who will face little to no scrutiny after their Natl Championships. Agree 100% about the recruits as well. My point was that ninerdad101 was trying to draw comparisons between the questions Coach Lutz was asked last night to those RoyBoy gets after L’s. Of course those questions are going to be night and day apart due to said accolades so his comparison was shot full of holes before he typed it.

WRONG- you can’t sell your soul for one guy.

KSU is a good team and Beasley is a monster. I would have loved to have him. But, I’ll go out on al imb and tell you this- wait two yrs. the only Manhatten anybody gives a damn about will be in NY and we’ll be rising.

He’s a man, but so was Rodney. We didn’t die when he left. You can not be that dependent on one recruit, and we’re not.

I’ll predict and I normally don’t- we’ll hit the sweet sixteen in two or three yrs.

O’kay this is way too easy… the average fan does not realize how good those shots really are…

For the record Plavich was a streaky shooter not a pure shooter.

Plavich was streaky or maybe pure, but he was a big time winner.

I was the ā€œeye rollerā€. I am an alum, bleed green, and a Bobby supporter. And this alum stands up when our play deserves it.

Nobody at Ham’s could hear the first ā€œcall inā€ question. We heard Bobby’s answer, asking the caller if he had seen the other games and defending the team’s shot selection.

I tried to frame my question a little differently, but apparently didn’t ask the question clearly. I pointed out that Charlotte had gotten the opposing bigs in foul trouble in the past two games and seemed to have had success going inside. Then I said that the people I attend and watch games with and I got frustrated because the team seemed to abandon going inside late in the game when it had been working, and resorted to shooting 3’s. Then asked Bobby to comment.

I thought my question was respectful, and didn’t feel like it was attacking him. I thought, based on Bobby’s in game gestures at the beginning of timeouts after a couple of early shot clock, off balance 3’s late in the game at Dayton and based on a conversation 5 minutes earlier with a certain Signature Sports icon, that Bobby would welcome the question. It would be a chance to say that they wanted to attack the middle. That’s what I get for thinking.

My take, and here I go thinking again, is that Bobby has been ā€œtalking toā€ Lee about shot selection to the point that Bobby thinks he’s damaged Lee’s confidence. Thursday night Bobby was going to great lengths to restore Lee’s confidence by publicly supporting Lee’s shot selection, whether he privately likes all of Lee’s shot’s or not.

He did work in a partial answer to my feeble attempt at a question, saying Dewberry had a turnover trying to take it inside late, saying Mack didn’t accept a pass strong (which was at the top of the key, not inside). I’m convinced the team wasn’t committed to going inside late, in spite of Bobby’s answer. I don’t have a problem with him defending his team, his coaching, or shot selection. But Bobby clearly took a defensive posture in responding to my question. Guess I needed to frame it a little more positively.

As for the ā€œeye rollingā€, it came when he asked me if I attended x, y & z games. I’ve missed 5 home games since I started school at Charlotte in 1981. Yes, all of the Wissel ball years. I’ve been to 9 of the last 10 conf tournaments, and try to travel to an ocassional road game, including Indiana when Plav hit the miracle, ClemPson this year and others. I am certain that Bobby knows I attend every game, maybe not those particular games. Last year, Boby went out of his way to thank me and my group for showing up at all of the games, when many weren’t wasting their time watching that garbage (my words, not his). The ā€œeye rollā€ was simple exasperation when he asked me if I was at the games. It wasn’t conscious or intentional, just a reaction.
