Lutz On WFNZ

FYI:

Bill Rosinski will have Bobby on during the 11am-12pm slot to talk about the GW game and upcoming A-10 Tournament. Can’t wait to hear his comments about Saturday after he’s had a chance to unwind a bit.

He would catch so much shit for it, but damn I wish he’d say:
We got screwed by the refs. They didn’t follow the rules. Plain and simple.
Honesty is beautiful.

It is what should be said, and I would gain soo much more respect for Lutz for it, but I know it won’t happen because of the reprecutions it will have.

Lutz won’t say it but Bill is doing a pretty good job of ripping the A-10 officials.

BTW: Lutz is scheduled for around 11:40am.

Cool!! Thanks for the “heads up.” Flipped my work radio on. He just said it would be at about 11:40 am.

Set 'em straight, Bobby!!! :ticked:

And being webcast as well…

the “blame the ref” scenario is amusing.

coaches always told me- and I firmly believe, in order to avoid a late bad call by a ref to decide a game, you have to make sure the game is won beyond a margin of error.

if you lose due to a bad call, its the breaks…and you have to win or insulate yourself beyond that margin.

for every bad call that hands you a loss, its probable at some point in the season you will be dealt a win due to bad officiating. Bad calls tend to equal themselves out over time.

I love Coach’s answer. Very PC - but we’re gonna to hold the officials accountable. Cannot ask for any more. That’s the right way to handle it.

if officiating wasn’t human I’d beleive the “Equalling out” theory…missing shots/making shots, turnovers and so forth are part of the game, its basketball. Bad calls, especially the unexplainable bad calls like Sat. are not or should not be “part of the game”

Quick recap for those that missed it:

Lutz basically said the game didn’t mean a whole lot other than ending the win streak.

He commented on how great the game was and that they basically had one more play than we did. Coach said he was emphatic about boxing out during the last time out but that we still allowed them to get the tip-in. He said the “new season” starts for us on Thursday and that quite simply, we have to win to keep playing.

Bill then said that if we met up with them again that we’d have a lot going for us. Lutz said we wanted to play in an intense atmosphere where you had very little going for you. Bobby said (minus Pops) we got their best shot and still kept our composure. He said that the problem now is just getting back to them in a rematch. He noted our close win against UMASS and our loss to Xavier but also noted we are playing much better now than when we played Xavier. He said that IF we get there, he likes our chances against GW.

Bill asked for scouting reports on UMass/Xavier. He mentioned the injury/suspension. He said they’re still a good team and that they hurt us on the perimeter in our first outing. Said we struggled to guard “the big white kid”…lol. Said they haven’t played as well since leaving Halton but they’re still at “home” and will have a great crowd. He said that UMASS is very athletic and good shot blockers. Noted we struggled on the inside against them and will have to really play well against them in the paint. Said Curt would have to be really good and we’d have to make outside shots.

Bill then asked Lutz if he thought winning the A-10 was the only way into the Big Dance. Bobby admitted it was a long shot regardless of Saturday. He said the focus is obviously on winning the tournament but that finished 2nd in the A-10 isn’t a horrible year. He said the league is very balanced/competitive and that we have a great shot to win this week.

That was virtually, the entire interview which was shorter than expected. No comments at all on Leemire and only a couple words about the officiating where Bobby said you can’t do a whole lot to penalize them like you can with players and coaches.

Hallelujah.

By the way, Bobby sounded like he hadn’t slept since Friday night. Knowing him, I’m guessing that’s not a far cry from the truth. Hope he can get some rest because he’s gonna need it come A-10 Tourney time.

i’ll be the one to agree with you on the non sleep factor last night was the first time i really got any sleep since we left to go to philadelphia for the women’s tournament.

Actually Bobby is wrong. You can do what the ACC did earlier this year with the bad tech call against FSU’s Alexander Johnson in the first Duke/FSU game and give them a public one game suspension. That sends a message and it is reported by ESPN.

But of course the A-10 isn’t going to do this because they’re idiots and don’t know how to discipline their sub par officials.

ask the Orioles about Jeffery Mayer

win the game outright and you won’t have to worry about a dumb ref

I would tend to believe officials are quietly suspended for an assignment more often than we know. It will be easy to know if Eric Anderson, Fran Connolly and Jack Sweeney are in Cincinnati later in the week.

I don’t think the problem is so much penalizing the refs after the screw up as it is having the right guys in there to begin with. I just feel like the A-10 officials are not on par with the officials you’ll find in the “bigger” conferences. We’re using YMCA guys out there and they are obviously not capable of handling big games like we had on Saturday.

It happens so infrequently I have to take advantage of it… I totally agree with everything Metro has said in this thread. We had plenty of opportunites to make that horrible call a non factor.

That is the most ridiculous load of machismo crap that I’ve ever read, and I’m tired of seeing it. The players have no control over the refs. They can only do what they can do on the floor, but you’re asking them to beat the other team PLUS bad officiating. You can preach that garbage from a soapbox from now til the end of time, but it’s total bunk. The goal of the team is to beat the other team, not the other TWO teams out there. The fact that the refs decided this game for EITHER team is absolutely embarassing for this league, and any league where that happens. Up until that point, we had two teams playing their asses off and that was an absolute joy to watch, as I pointed out in my “win or lose - great game” post. That was before the zebras ****ed it all up, taking a ridiculous 6 minutes to make the wrong damn call.
