Malcolm Armstead 2009

Should be making a visit on campus Thursday: http://gmine.blogspot.com/2009/03/top-juco-point-guard-to-visit-49ers.html

a Juco, but a 3 year Juco.

I LIKE IT!

Armstead has already received offers from Arkansas, Iowa and Providence.
Those teams are usually no slouches. This sounds like this could be a good get for us.

3-yr JUCO + 2-yr JUCO???

i like this.

I am going to reserve any excitement of a top JUCO PG (ghost of Carlos Williams)

Or could be Dijuan Harris, another 3 yr juco pg from florida jc (best case scenario).

Can anyone post some stats on this guy? All i could open was the Rivals and Jim’s post.
Malcolm Armstead, PG, Chipola- Over the past couple of months, our phone has been ringing off the hook as schools looking for a guy to run the show scour the country. A lefty with a strong build, Armstead is emerging as one of the most sought after floor generals in the country. He makes good decisions, bounces off defenders and is particularly dangerous in pick and roll situations. Dropped off 10 dimes while adding 12 points to only three turnovers.
Pulled this off a St John’s board, not sure what the original source was.

Carlos Williams? Never heard of him. Now, Sean Colson, that’s a different story!

Ah, the 3 yr JUCO PG I heard about.

shot 47-79 from 3 - 51.9%
88-167 overall from the floor - 52.69%
23-35 on FT - 65.71%
scored 6.857 PPG

A couple of articles about Malcolm when he was in high school:

I-95 Ballerz: Golden Gophers get first visit from Alabama point guard
The 6-foot scoring point is dropping an eye opening 31 points 11 assists per game, while leading CPC to an undefeated 17-0 season so far. High major schools are well aware of Armstead’s ability to both score and dish the rock.

“I like Minnesota, Villanova, Tennessee, Michigan and Wake Forest right now,” says the Florence, Alabama native, who moved to the Birmingham area two seasons ago.
Pretty good list of schools who were after him out of high school.
Armstead has nice handle and is quicker than he looks, consistently getting by his man off the dribble and finishes in the paint. If you sleep on his jumper he’ll pull up in your face and drill a jumper.

Many have compared Malcolm’s game to current Golden State Warrior point guard Baron Davis; citing Armstead’s lefty handle, stocky build, deceptive quickness and of course his ability to light up the scoreboard, all as reasons for the association.
Another article that points out some flaws in his game at that time:
Armstead’s performance at the recently completed Nike Peach Jam in Augusta, GA, turned the heads of many coaches, while making believers out of non-believers in his skill set. Brandishing a lethal lefty crossover, Malcolm repeatedly got to the rim versus some of the more highly ranked guards in the nation.

Unfortunately for Malcolm, Wright made the necessary adjustments on defense and forced him to right, which Armstead wasn’t as adept at doing as well, and contained the ultra quick dynamo for the rest of the contest. A contest Boo Williams won easily, but not due to a lack of effort on Malcolm’s part

Despite his minor shortcomings, Malcolm averaged 18 points and five assists per game as a shooting guard for Florence High. Malcolm boasts a 3.5 grade point average as well.

“My shot selection was poor, but I’ll get better and that will in turn improve my jump shot as well”, stated Armstead, who will change schools attend Central Park Christian in Birmingham next season.

South Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Michigan State and Michigan and UAB fills Malcolm’s laundry list of schools. He hasn’t made a decision yet, but stated he may make one soon after returning from Disney or right before the school year begins.
Armstead was listed as the #69 PG nationally in 2007.

Why did he have to go the JUCO route? His numbers were solid and he had a decent GPA.

Is the SAT minimum still required? I was also wondering where he went in 07-08, since he was evidently a high school senior in 2006-2007.

shot 47-79 from 3 - 51.9% 88-167 overall from the floor - 52.69% 23-35 on FT - 65.71% scored 6.857 PPG
If he makes 50% from 3.... he would avg 25 ppg for us under Lutz. I can see Lutz offering his first born to get a 50% 3 point shooter.

Can we trade him for Coleman?
