Tweeted from Jim:Former Alabama coach/now ESPN analyst Mark Gottfried declines comment when asked if interviewed for Charlotte 49ers bball job.
âNo commentâ leads me to believe heâs at least had contact with the AD. I wonder why he hasnât been discussed much, if at all on this board.
278-156 overall
68-24 at Murray state (3 years - 1 NIT and 2 NCAAs)
210-132 at Alabama (3 NITs and 5 NCAAs, 1 elite 8 ) in 10 full seasons, but left 19 games into the 2008-2009 season over an apparent dispute with the AD.
I wouldnât mind him⌠the only thing I donât like is that he is a southern guy, and I really do think we need a northern kind of coach.
That being said, he managed to win at Alabama. That is impressive, seeing that as recent as the mid sixties Alabamaâs varsity basketball team was primarily the best of the best from intramurals.
As far as re-treads go, it seems like heâs had more recent success than just about everyone else thatâs been mentioned. Iâve been reading up on him, doesnât seem like an outstanding candidate nor does he seem totally horrible. Heâs had tournament success this decade, would be interesting to see if he could recruit for the A10 like Lew said.
Shady⌠keep him away from the Gold Dusters. Lots of talk that a Tuscaloosa blonde caused a morals clause contract violation. I donât have time now to search for the photo of her but was the typical SEC babe.
he quit in the middle of the 2008-2009 seasonâŚso about a year. I would certainly think many of his recruiting contacts would still be in place. I just donât know what areas of the country he recruits in, although at an SEC school Iâd obviously assume the gulfcoast region.
This guy would be the best candidate listed so far⌠if we could afford him:
âGottfried signed a six-year contract with Alabama in 2005 that made him the schoolâs first $1 million basketball coach and gave him a larger salary than that of football coach Mike Shula.â

He took a team that was #1 in the country in January that damn near missed the tournament.
No thanks.
If you can take a team to #1 in the country, then youâre doing something right.
Hell, Iâd put a ânight-with-a-goldduster clauseâ in anyoneâs coaching contract in exchange for a #1 overall ranking.
On the flip side if you take a 9-0 team ranked #1 into January and finish 17-12 you did something very wrong as well.
Iâm buddies with a Bama guy, said he has never seen a worse game manager in his life
