Mark Gottfried (Former HC at Alabama)

Tweeted from Jim: Former Alabama coach/now ESPN analyst Mark Gottfried declines comment when asked if interviewed for Charlotte 49ers bball job.

“No comment” leads me to believe he’s at least had contact with the AD. I wonder why he hasn’t been discussed much, if at all on this board.

278-156 overall
68-24 at Murray state (3 years - 1 NIT and 2 NCAAs)
210-132 at Alabama (3 NITs and 5 NCAAs, 1 elite 8 ) in 10 full seasons, but left 19 games into the 2008-2009 season over an apparent dispute with the AD.

Thoughts?

He’s had success and I wouldn’t classify him as a retread/retard, but he may want too much considering his last payscale.

I wouldn’t mind him… the only thing I don’t like is that he is a southern guy, and I really do think we need a northern kind of coach.

That being said, he managed to win at Alabama. That is impressive, seeing that as recent as the mid sixties Alabama’s varsity basketball team was primarily the best of the best from intramurals.

Agreed. I believe I posted in the potential coaches thread that he seems better than most other “retreads”.

As far as re-treads go, it seems like he’s had more recent success than just about everyone else that’s been mentioned. I’ve been reading up on him, doesn’t seem like an outstanding candidate nor does he seem totally horrible. He’s had tournament success this decade, would be interesting to see if he could recruit for the A10 like Lew said.

how long has he been out of coaching? Would his recruiting ties still be there?

Shady… keep him away from the Gold Dusters. Lots of talk that a Tuscaloosa blonde caused a morals clause contract violation. I don’t have time now to search for the photo of her but was the typical SEC babe.

he quit in the middle of the 2008-2009 season…so about a year. I would certainly think many of his recruiting contacts would still be in place. I just don’t know what areas of the country he recruits in, although at an SEC school I’d obviously assume the gulfcoast region.

This is worth researching. I will get on it ASAP.

Article from when he left Alabama… details are sketchy.

Well if he brings some of those typical babes with him I’m all for it.

ehh

I like the brunette better…

Found this:

He took a team that was #1 in the country in January that damn near missed the tournament.

No thanks.

This guy would be the best candidate listed so far… if we could afford him:

“Gottfried signed a six-year contract with Alabama in 2005 that made him the school’s first $1 million basketball coach and gave him a larger salary than that of football coach Mike Shula.”

I’d give all 3 a turn

He recruited this guy right??

If you can take a team to #1 in the country, then you’re doing something right.

Hell, I’d put a ‘night-with-a-goldduster clause’ in anyone’s coaching contract in exchange for taking Charlotte to a #1 overall ranking.

On the flip side if you take a 9-0 team ranked #1 into January and finish 17-12 you did something very wrong as well.

I’m buddies with a Bama guy, said he has never seen a worse game manager in his life
