Martelli on X's Stanley Burrell

Read this on Dustin Dow’s blog at the Cincy Enquirer. Seems that Phil Martelli won’t be sad when Xavier’s Stanley Burrell uses up his collegiate eligibity!

Other than some costly turnovers, Burrell had a nice game today: big 3-pointers, a key pass at the end of the game, a game-securing steal. Martelli had seen enough:

“Is there anybody here from the Xavier administration? Do you know when graduation is? That goddamn Burrell, every year, every goddam game makes a shot against us. He was averaging 7.5 points coming into the game in seven league games – or eight games. Doesn’t look like the same player, playing great defense. Dagger. I want to be here to make sure that sonofabitch gets out of here to be honest with you.”

 :lmao: Think he’s frustrated??

That is freaking awesome.

I wish coaches still talked like that. Reminds me of ol’ Lefty “this ain’t no Mickey Mouse team I’ve got here” Driesell.

Anyone think Thuggy Bear said that about Diego?

Say what you want about Phil but he tells it like it is .

Martelli was still talking about Burrell at today’s A-10 conference call…

"He's been in college for nine years, this kid. I don't care what the date is," Martelli said. "I'm going to be standing there by that stage to make sure he walks across and gets that diploma."

Calling someone a SONOFABITCH is not a compliment, anyone who thinks so must be smoking crack. Martelli’s statement was no more that a cheap shot and was totally inappropriate. Being frustrated because a loss does not give you the right to malign someone’s character. His insults and accusations, about Burell being in school for nine years, were demeaning and racist. He needs to be reprimanded as well as appologize to Burrell and his mother. For those of you who think that his statement was a term of endearment - the next time someone calls you a SOB thank them for the compliment.

Demeaning, I’ll give you if you’re touchy, but racist… wow, what a reach. Nobody should crazy over his comments, you have no idea what his tone could have been. If he is chuckling as he says it, I doubt he means it so rudely as you so believe.

I still haven’t found where anyone said it was a compliment. And then to call his comments racist? Wow. It’s more than a stretch, its completely made up.

I suddenly have a new found respect for Martelli. That is unbelievably hilarious.

Believe me he was not chuckling, I saw his interview after the game when he made the statement. His demeanor exemplified a person who was frustrated and pissed off, he was not laughing. Some Xavier fans as well as Dustin Dow (on his blog) tried to pass off Coach Martelli’s comment (calling Burrell an SOB) as a compliment for his outstanding performance.

I took it as a compliment and a huge show of respect.

We had the same conversations about the Diener family back in the CUSA days. Seemed liked they played forever, and always had a hand in beating us.

While the comments do seem to be in bad taste, I don’t feel there was any malice at all. I definately don’t see where you pull racism out of the statement.

How ludicrous!! the next time someone calls your mother the “B” word NinerAl, be sure to thank them for the compliment, and the huge show of respect. As far as the racism is concerned, when Martelli said that Burrell had been in college for 9 years, he was reinforcing the stereotype that African American athletes don’t graduate from colleges and universities.

Keyrist Oldschool, grow a skin and lighten the hell up. By the way you sound like Al Sharpton, injecting race into the conversation where it doesn’t belong.

When he was talking about 9 years (how long it feels) he was referring to his years of athletic eligibility, not his academic tenure. Stop digging for the race card, its not there.

I’m probably going to be in college nine years and I am as white as they come.

I’m just saying its not a racist thing.

Borderline idiotic. Come on man. That’s stupid.

LMFAO… he was reinforcing the idea that it seems like Burrell has been busting his balls for eternity, not that he is too stupid to graduate… dear god, I hope for your sake that you started this to see what kind of reaction you could get.
