Martelli on X's Stanley Burrell
I’m just saying its not a racist thing.
I know, it isn’t racist. Clearly he never saw Tommy Boy… I’m jealous. I wish I was still in school, starting year 17.

Wow! Racist comment eh? I dub you armstrong, because that was a big stretch.
Calling someone a SONOFABITCH is not a compliment, anyone who thinks so must be smoking crack. Martelli’s statement was no more that a cheap shot and was totally inappropriate. Being frustrated because a loss does not give you the right to malign someone’s character. His insults and accusations, about Burell being in school for nine years, were demeaning and racist. He needs to be reprimanded as well as appologize to Burrell and his mother. For those of you who think that his statement was a term of endearment - the next time someone calls you a SOB thank them for the compliment.
Damn Dude- read your poster name. It’s an old school sign of respect. As in, ā€œBlank’s a tough sonuvabitch and I wish he would graduate and get the hell out of the league. How long has he been hear anyway?ā€

Never even entered my mind that Martelli’s comments could be construed as racist. And apparently not by anyone in Cincy or Philly as well since nothing has been posted on either Hawk Hoop Forum or Musketeer Madness along those lines. Geez!

It was obviously a show of respect by Martelli for Burrell. Calling Martelli’s comments racist is borderline idiotic.

How many times were similar comments made about JJ Redick or even Diego?

Anytime you are a 4 year player who plays significant minutes all 4 years, it seems like that kid is in school forever, its just how the college game has become with so many kids leaving early. Calling him a SOB is like calling him a thorn in his side for 4 years or 9 years, its an expression when someone has been frustrating you for so long.

LMFAO... he was reinforcing the idea that it seems like Burrell has been busting his balls for eternity, not that he is too stupid to graduate... dear god, I hope for your sake that you started this to see what kind of reaction you could get.

Stop being an appologist and making excuses for Martelli, everyone knew exactly what he meant. Your attempt to put a positive spin on his derogatory comments are falling on deaf ears. If Martelli wanted to say somethig positive about Burell, he would have done so without the sarcasm, the whole purpose of sarcasm is to discredit and injure a person’s self respect… ā€œDon’t piss on my head and tell me it’s rainingā€

Well, apparently everyone except you. Did you actually go to the links I posted and read everything? I doubt it…

Really? It looks like everyone here is disagreeing with you. Maybe your attempts to make this a race issue is falling on ā€˜deaf ears’?

Anyone who knows how Martelli is knows when he is saracstic or giving back-handed compliments it is a good thing. When he seems overly genuine it is when he is being a jerk.

Careful run… I’d clarify that you aren’t implying he can’t read. As we all know, all comments that deal with literacy are obviously made with racial overtones. I’d hate to see you get in hot water.

Stop playing the race card for a comment that has nothing to do with race. If someone says it takes you 9 years to graduate and they are trying to be hurtful they are attacking your ability to learn, not your skin color, if you can’t see that then you’re paranoid of the world around you, and you are the real problem with the world today, you’re the reason racism is such a problem. Everytime you play the race card when it is unneccessary, you demean every person who ever has or will be discriminated against in the world, lessening the ā€œlistening earsā€ that would lend a hand to help them or fight against such an injustice, but you would rather ruin that and take someone’s back handed compliment and use it as a racial insult. You are the one implying Burrell is stupid, and that it is b/c of his race, Martelli made a sly comment and you blew it out of proportion.

Your cries should fall on deaf ears… go cry wolf somewhere else.

I think yours are the only ones being deaf here. Everyone between your last and previous post disagreed and the matter hasn’t shown up anywhere else. If this were the polotics forum I might ask you how you felt about Mackey for sherrif, but I won’t.

Well, apparently everyone except you. Did you actually go to the links I posted and read everything? I doubt it...

Not only did I read your link 49er, I also saw the interview on tv, when Martelli made his comments cncerning Burrell.

hootie - Martelli’s comments were not made in jest as a sign of respect, believe me I saw the interview, he was was clearly pissed off and frustrated. He meant what he said and said what he meant. At least he was honest, I’m more outraged at those of you who are making excuses for him, and giving him a pass…It is what it is.

How ludicrous!! the next time someone calls your mother the "B" word NinerAl, be sure to thank them for the compliment, and the huge show of respect. As far as the racism is concerned, when Martelli said that Burrell had been in college for 9 years, he was reinforcing the stereotype that African American athletes don't graduate from colleges and universities.

I really wish you would quit making these derogatory statements towards Martilli. Clearly, by stating that Martilli was using sacasm to convey racists undertones, you yourself were reinforcing the stereotype that White Italian men are racists

I could maybe buy that his comments are insluting, but calling these comments racist is absurd.

Has Burrell even mentioned the matter? Anyone know?

I think it’s only fair to point out that oldskool is posting from a location that would suggest he is anything but a Niner fan.

I’m not sure if you’re just an annoyed Xavier fan, or just a plain pot stirrer, or both, but the verdict from this board is in, and it appears you are on a lonely desert island with your opinion.

Right on the head, NA.

 1. The race card could not be played if it were not in the deck to begin with. Unfortunately, evey now and then racism raises its ugly head and it must be nipped in the bud. Part of problem solving is defining and discussing the problem, hopefully we can do this without being disagreeable.

 2. The term back-handed compliment is an oxymoron, and is no more than an indirect verbal attack. For Martelli to refer to Burrell as ā€œthat goddamn Burrellā€ and ā€œthat Sonofabitchā€ is unprofessionable and unconscionable (especially for a coach who is suppose to be a role model and a mentor). Even Bobby Knight (as unorthodox as he was) never berated or called a player from the opposing team a sonofabitch (in a public interview) merely because he had an outwstanding performance.

 3. Who is more blind than he who refuses to see… get your head out of the sand.
