1. The race card could not be played if it were not in the deck to begin with. Unfortunately, evey now and then racism raises its ugly head and it must be nipped in the bud. Part of problem solving is defining and discussing the problem, hopefully we can do this without being disagreeable.
The term back-handed compliment is an oxymoron, and is no more than an indirect verbal attack. For Martelli to refer to Burrell as âthat goddamn Burrellâ and âthat Sonofabitchâ is unprofessionable and unconscionable (especially for a coach who is suppose to be a role model and a mentor). Even Bobby Knight (as unorthodox as he was) never berated or called a player from the opposing team a sonofabitch (in a public interview) merely because he had an outwstanding performance.

Thereâs plenty of cards to play, just b/c its in the deck doesnât mean you play it everytime. I agree racism does rear its head every now and again, but this isnât one of those times. Thereâs no discussion, he never used a racial term or insinuated that it was because of race he believed Burrell hadnât graduated in 9 years. So if Burrell was French Canadian, would you still have extracted the same undertones you seem to profess as being so apparent?
So what if its an oxymoron? If you think Martelli should have chosen different words, fine, we can discuss and come to that conclusion, but to make it bigger then it is, is a joke and there is nothing further to define out of his comments. If you want an apology for Burrellâs mom, then fine, Iâm sure she is a wonderful lady and didnât deserve her name to be slandered, but I bet sheâs laughing her ass off at the fact her son is on a top team in the nation and attends and excels at a prestigious Jesuit University (Xavier). Thatâs right St. Joeâs is a Jesuit University in good academic standing too, so Iâm pretty sure Martelli has a great idea of just what kind of curriculum Burrell goes through. It was a compliment, however sly, back-handed, smart ass, whatever way you want to spin it, it was not racist, get over it, you will NOT win that point here to any of us. If it bothers you so much and you are so incensed by those remarks please visit the following:

Pulling the race card when ever you feel like it is the problem. When there is evidence, then sure, pull it. It doesnât exist here, you have to acknowledge that if you want any credibility.

Calling someone a SONOFABITCH is not a compliment, anyone who thinks so must be smoking crack. Martelli's statement was no more that a cheap shot and was totally inappropriate. Being frustrated because a loss does not give you the right to malign someone's character. His insults and accusations, about Burell being in school for nine years, were demeaning and racist. He needs to be reprimanded as well as appologize to Burrell and his mother. For those of you who think that his statement was a term of endearment - the next time someone calls you a SOB thank them for the compliment.
Lighten up Francis.
I wish that somebody was talking about several of our players like that.

Okay Iâve read this thread far enough,
Let me guess a few characteristics about you:
You are a liberal.
You think Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton are Gods who canât do anything wrong.
You have a job for a media outlet to âspinâ things into a different perspective so it will result in someone being offended.
You hate George Bush.
You are going to call this post by me racist and offensive and a quick charactization.
BTW, your post should be inserted into the NNN HOF, itâs a funny how you can draw so much out of a simple statement like âsonofabitchâ or someone joking about how a guy seems like heâs been around forever. Iâd love to see how your interpretation of a Flannery OâConnor short story, you might make her turn over in her grave.

Of course, it is the person who lacks the ability to think critically for him/herself that, when confronted with the fallacy of their own arguments, totally abandons substance and is left with only personal attacks. With that being said, I would be interested in reading any real response you might have to what I posed previously, unless you have reached your intellectual limit.

so calling someone a racist without any grounds isnât a personal attack?
youâve gotten plenty of real responses (which is more than you deserve), you just have a hard time accepting that youâre wrong.

The problem with your basic argument is your projection of a racial issue on a conversation that was clearly not racial. The reason youâre facing ad hominem attacks is that your argument is SO foundationless that thereâs almost no way to attack it. Itâs like saying âI think apples are made of dinosaur bones just made to look like fruit.â Without any sort of chemical tests at hand, itâs hard to even begin to tell the person how they are wrong. But you are wrong, let me assure you. If you can find ONE other person to agree with you, let us know. Otherwise, you can move on to because youâve already stated your argument, and itâs clear youâre not a great persuader. You have nothing left to do here.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. With that said, the fact still remains that Martelli called Burrell a âSonofabi**hâ and while many on this board choose to call it a compliment, the term is demeaning and lacks decorum for someone who calls himself a coach in the A10. That kind of language may be acceptable on the playgrounds and rec centers (in a pick-up game of b-ball) in Philly, but not in the Atlantic 10 conference. None is more blind than he who refuses to see.

Well, sorry to burst your bubble about Saint Lutz, but Iâve heard him say worse. In particular, an exchange between Bobby and Shawn Finney as they left the court at halftime comes to mind!

Iâd kill to get audio of that. I remember you talking about it, though I forget exactly what was said.
I guarantee that Burrell will never, ever forget what Martelli said. And for the rest of his life, whenever Burrell thinks about it, he will smile.
