I don’t think it is a bad fit. He brings defense to the ACC, something that league hasn’t seen in a long time. Remember when Ben Howland went from Pitt to UCLA, the Pac-10 was all run and gun, now it is more of a half court league. It could be the change of the guard to compete with UNC & Duke, because those two schools are going to beat you with offense and talent.
Herb achieved success at the end of his tenure at NCSU, but he could not beat UNC-CH and Duke on a consistant basis (once Roy returned to UNC-CH). I don’t think Bennett will draw players as good as what Herb managed to get to NCSU while he was there running a similar-styled system. With the caliber players Bennett will have, I don’t think he’ll have more than NIT success if he’s there long enough to achieve that.

I don’t know that he’ll have a top 3 team, but I bet he could have a top 5 team. That means he’ll be in the tournament most years. That is much better than where UVa is right now.
Herb could have had NCSU as a top 3 school. I mean, they were well on their way before he got sick of it and quit.
Anthony Grant moves to Alabama. Hard to believe he was getting $700,000 plus incentives at VCU.
VCU gets another Florida assistant. One with a cool name.
SI.com’s Seth Davis reports that Shaka Smart, an assistant coach at Florida, will be introduced as the new coach at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Smart replaces Anthony Grant, another former Florida assistant, who left VCU for Alabama. Smart graduated from Kenyon College in 1999 where he was a four-year starter and a three-year captain
I heard they are expecting
Dean Smith, Rick Pitino, John Wooden, Adolph Rupp, Bill Self, Jamie Dixon, Thad Motta, Jim Calhaun and Sean Miller
to all express an interest in their school.
Mike Anderson, Oliver Purnell, Tim Floyd, and Reggie Theus is what I’ve heard. If Adam Kennedy hadn’t yelled racial slurs in Cincy, he’d be on the list too.

He could easily have a top 5 ACC program, but I think if he has it it will be rotational. UNC-CH and Duke are almost always 1-2, with the others rotating year-to-year between 3-12. I don’t think Bennett will keep Virginia in the Top 5 year to year. Heck, Leitao was tied for 1st two seasons ago and he’s unemployed now.
State fans could not deal with the realization that Herb could not beat UNC-CH and Duke on a regular basis, despite his NCAA success the last 4 years he was there. Most of the boosters hated him and his style of play. Many of them are still stuck in 1974, and believe that their program is still on that level as far as attractiveness goes. Not!!!
I doubt you can get any of those guys to Mempiss.
Why not, Memphis just matched UK’s offer in terms of money. I think Anderson and Purnell are probably not interested though. Floyd wanted the job when cal was rumored to be going to NCST.
Maybe, MAYBE, Tim Floyd can create a semblance of what Calimari had at Mempiss, but he’s nowhere near as good a coach. He’s not going to be able to keep the program at the level it is at right now and being in a non BCS conference will expose his weaknesses.

And 1983. Don’t forget that one. Otherwise, Lowe probably isn’t the coach!
No one is going to have the run we’ve had the last 4 seasons. It’s been a lovely ride and we almost became the third program ever to go to 3 straight Elite 8s. However, Floyd can recruit and would probably stop the bleeding. However, I hate the offense he runs.

Uh…more than three teams have been to three straight Elite 8s. Duke, Cincy and UCLA come to mind right off the bat.

Mike Anderson has a choice between SEC and Big 12 and already left CUSA, so no.
Oliver Purnell coaches in the ACC and has an improving squad that will get better, so no.
Tim Floyd coaches in the PAC-10 and runs Memphis West with better selling points, so no.
Reggie Theus is rumored as a potential candidate at Arizona and will be offered other top jobs (though I do not think he deserves it) I guess he is a potential candidate that may consider the job since he has failed miserably in the NBA. (sounds familiar)
I don’t see Floyd leaving USC to come to Memphis unless you pay him substantially more. If he was still in Ames, he would chomp at the bit. Yeah, he’s at a “football” school. That just really handicapped Florida and their recruiting. He’s had 3 straight Top 25 recruiting classes at USC, so I don’t know what would possess him to want to leave unless it’s a 50-100% raise.
