My prediction though not earth-shaking: Donovan leaves FL for KY, Grant leaves VCU for FL. Lutz to VCU? More local conference, kind of easier recruiting . . . I would hate to have to coach a team that played in the freaking A-10. Just a bad fit in my opinion. Good bball conference, mind you. X and Dayton proved that this year alone. Just has nothing to do with anything North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia or Tennessee which is the core super-regional market for Charlotte. Ohio? NY? RI? MA? PA? Forget it, they’re fine with themselves, UNCC is a bad fit for that conference. It so darn obvious.
Uh, no. Lutz won’t leave. If he didn’t take the cushy job at South Alabama why would think he would go to VCU? Last time I checked his job wasn’t even a concern.
Don’t know if Donovan would leave Florida either for a program that expects miracles in two years. Does Kentucky really think Gillispie could engineer a team in two years to go where UK thinks they belong every year? He has to get his players and his system in place, which the last time I checked could take longer than 2 years.
Tubby got out at the right time, I feel sorry for Gillispie
VCU is, if only marginally, a better choice for Lutz. It is closer to a region he recruits heavily and the conference has better name recognition.
Also, most everyone agrees that Gillespie is on the way out for not being able to handle the media circus. He’s not greasing the right palms, saying the right things and kissing the right ass. Sort of like what is going to happen to Lane Kiffin if he doesn’t produce results early with as much hoopla as he has caused.

VCU would probably not want Lutz and would aim for a high level assistant at a BCS school. They have had much succes with that formula with Capel and Grant.

I’m not saying he could get a job there, I’m saying VCU would be a more attractive job.

It really is a shame that they think they are gods gift to the sport of college basketball and that everyone who has the privilege of coaching there needs to kiss their ass.
They are going through a transition phase, just like Notre Dame in football (even though it looks like they are prepping for FCS). They need to give the guy a break. I will agree though that he should do somethings, like the Lexington Rotary lunch that has been done for decades, that was a bad move.

That’s just it, I’m sure they would be giving him a break if he wasn’t pissing off the rich alums. Tubby Smith had the disadvantage of following Pitino and never getting another title with his own players. He never had a chance there. Oh, and he is black. That didn’t help.
but UK is probably willing to give a coach a chance, Tubby was there for a long time, even though the fanbase wanted him gone day one.
Apparently there are rumors (I think BS, of Pitino to Arizona), in any case the Arizona job is basically Cal's for the taking, with Reggie Theus making a big push and possibly Mark Few if he decides to leaves Gonzaga.Thought is Cal won’t throw his name into the Kentucky consideration again since he felt “embarrassed” from the last go around. Jay Wright actually turned down the Kentucky job in 2007. Either way Gillepsie won’t be fired until they have a replacement set.
If Wright really turned down an offer last year, then you’re probably right. I wasn’t aware of that. Are you sure it wasn’t like Calipari saying he turned down the NC State job, and NC State saying they never offered it to him?
Didn’t something similar happen to Lutz too?
Did you throw in the black card?!!! No you didn’t!
If Gillispie is gone it is for the alienating of the alum when they have to be please, esp. UK’s rich alum. I think in my honest opinion he could get UK back to a competitive level in the next 2 years. Real shame though.

Wasn’t it the South Carolina job at one time. I think the UT job may have been another but that had been a while back.

He is a worse coach than Tubby Smith. I’m not saying Tubby Smith is even a top 10 coach right now, but he is better than Gillespie by a significant margin. I don’t care who your players are, you don’t win a national championship unless you are a good coach.
They are looking for an elite coach, and I don’t know if they are going to get one right now. They settled last time for Gillespie and he alienated the people who could have saved his job.

I’ve heard it from a number of outlets up here that he turned down an offer.
As for the CAA being better than the A10? WTF
The CAA is as almost all over the place as the A10 and is lucky to get an at-large bid into the dance.
CAA isn’t better than the A-10, I said VCU is better than USA.

VCU is better than USA???
That is very un-American of you to say…
It’s okay, I’m a tarheel and wildcat sympathizer too.
Remember of those 5 Big East teams left, Villanova is one of them and they have the best recruiting class in the Big East coming in next season.
Right. But I think what you’re missing is, as well as he’s done this season, they were considered the 4th best team in the Big East and got a 3 seed. If he had the same team at Kentucky this year, he would have been the best team in the SEC and probably received a 1 seed. That’s what I mean about it being easier.
Not to mention that I think recruiting players for Kentucky would be easier. Generally speaking, and I know this kind of goes against being a Niner fan, but the state named school is always perceived as being the better gig.

Did he get that $6 million buy out?
He should go coach Georgia for free while he collects if he could.
Wasn't it the South Carolina job at one time. I think the UT job may have been another but that had been a while back.
I don’t think Lutz ever said he turned down those jobs. Calipari did say that. But Lutz did essentially say he turned down the S Alabama job.
