macker1283 says: March 27, 2009, 3:16 PM ETIf Travis Ford takes the job I will laugh so hard. Go to UMASS for two years, go to OKST for one year, now on to Kentucky. Talk about no loyalty and all ambition.
I dunno if anyone has taken this possibility seriously, but in thsi day and age, nothing suprises me.

I think it is very strong. The pressure is scary there, and I think only someone who experienced it first hand would be willing to face it. Gillespie only getting 2 seasons and getting canned more for his lack of relationships with the AD and boosters than on the court success should scare away potential coaches.
I would hate to have to coach a team that played in the freaking A-10. Just a bad fit in my opinion. Good bball conference, mind you. X and Dayton proved that this year alone. Just has nothing to do with anything North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia or Tennessee which is the core super-regional market for Charlotte. Ohio? NY? RI? MA? PA? Forget it, they’re fine with themselves, UNCC is a bad fit for that conference. It so darn obvious.
So Virginia has nothing to do with the A-10? Last time I checked, Richmond is still there and Washington, D.C. sits on the Potomac in the northern part of said state. Hmmm…
I’m assuming by your inclusion of Ohio that you thought Conference USA was a bad fit for the Niners. In addition to the Buckeye State, that one included NC, Alabama, FLorida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. Can’t find a map of the original C-USA, but you can fill-in the gaps on this one.
Finally, I will have to surmise from your comments that you would be dead set against conference affiliation in the Big East. Afterall, BE includes Ohio, NY, RI, and PA, not to mention CT, FL, IL, IN, NJ, WI, and WV.

I don’t see the potential hiring of Ford much differently than hiring Gillespie as far as accomplishments. They’d still be taken a gamble based off a potential. Maybe it works out but I definitely don’t see him as a proven commodity yet.
I was referring to what Tubby had when he was shown the door in comparison to what Wright has established at Nova.
The 76% winning percentage did include his entire tenure and I believe he was the National Coach of the year in 2005. But that’s not even my point, as far as who is the better coach. My point was that it could be easier at Kentucky than at Nova. 10 over all SEC championships for Tubby, compared to 1 for Wright.
Dalonte Hill Asc. Coach at K-State, thought it would interest you guys, almost unanimous agreement among ASU fans that this is fantasy, as he makes upwards of Half a million at K-State (would take 50% pay cut) and will probably be HC at a BCS program in a few short years. Would be fun to see him recruit top 50 players to ASU.

That’s just it, I’m sure they would be giving him a break if he wasn’t pissing off the rich alums. Tubby Smith had the disadvantage of following Pitino and never getting another title with his own players. He never had a chance there. Oh, and he is black. That didn’t help.
but UK is probably willing to give a coach a chance, Tubby was there for a long time, even though the fanbase wanted him gone day one.
Tubby got more slack because of that National Title. He would have been gone 2-3 years sooner without it. Not saying he should have been, just pointing out that their fans would have been just as irrational as they are now despite his success without that National Title.

Ford is one of their own, and he would be welcomed. That being said, if he has a few seasons like Gillespie they will take his jersey out of the rafters and send him packing, too.
If I’m Virginia, I made the phone call to Gillespie yesterday. He was a winner at UTEP and Texas A&M, and probably at Kentucky given time. The Cavs won’t get anybody better.

Tubby is not and never will be a players coach. He is very tough on them. Very similar to Bobby Knight in that regard.

Agree on both points. I’m not saying they won’t hire Ford. But as an outsider, it seems silly in that I don’t think he’s accomplished any more than Gillespie.
And Gillespie or Tubby would be great lands for UVA.

Tubby doesn’t choke his players or smack them around. I didn’t know he had reputation as being a “hardass”, but he’s never had the the cloud over his head that Knight has.

No he doesn’t have that cloud. But he is definitely a hard ass. He has the reputation of running players off and did do a poor job of recruiting at perhaps one of the top 5 programs in the country. Also, the success he had with possibly lesser talent level players.
