Mike Hill and the Future

Currently the only good thing going for Hill right now is the softball program and the Poggi hire which is still unknown but looking positive.

Baseball and softball were good hires. Women’s soccer is going to turn out to be a good hire.
Maybe you don’t care, but it’s really unfair to discount those hires.

Edit: I see you edited to include softball.

Under normal circumstances I’d agree, but if you drop nearly $2M to get rid of Sanchez while also pushing a $100M facilities upgrade campaign that you’ve been quiet on for most of the year, you’re just asking for two hornets nests to be stirred up at the same time. Especially with our untested, rookie college head coach yet to take a snap. Just not a good time to make a needed call.

Well it’s 450x3 so 1.4 millish and with it being likely being mostly offset I think thats an easier spin than why you are keeping him.

Um…I suppose. So what’s the spin for keeping him? He’s secretly Mike’s brother-in-law?

Guys I really think we need to give Hill a break here.

An AD is not going to hit a home run with every hire. And Sanchez was a good hire, he just didn’t work out.

I’m convinced that Mike Hills heart is in the right place and his experience so far has made him a better AD.

I’m CONVINCED that the AAC invite was critical to our future and he got that done. I’m gonna give him a lot of leeway on that.

If he is able to bring Evergreen across the finish line then he gets more leeway from me.

I value those two things more than coaching hires for an AD because those things at least create an infrastructure we can grow within.

So count me in the Hill camp with fingers crossed Poggi and the next basketball hire are successful.

Yeah I am still on Mike’s side - outside of basketball dumpster fire I am onboard with everything.

Evergreen isn’t concerning me yet based on what I have heard, but we do need some official communication on status relatively soon.

If we are banking on Sanchez getting an offset job wouldn’t it make sense to fire him now when he is likely coming off the best season (at least by wins) in his life oppose to after next season coming off a losing record season?

I, like most, thought the Sanchez hire was solid. Looked great on paper but it’s not working. It’s time to cut bait to me but I don’t think it’s happening

There is not one basketball program in the ACC that believes in us, or that would support anything for us if they thought it might benefit us as much as them, much less more than them. Why the hell would you hire an ACC assistant coach to be our head coach? Do you think a guy like that would have recognized us favorably in any way when he was recruiting? Why would an AD bring in a guy from the ACC that has already been indoctrinated into the persistent negative posture toward the University of Charlotte in general. Why would he extend him after the coach clearly shows he is not able to recruit and coach up to the ACC level of expectation that was used as the basis for his hire?

Wish he was a freaking Niner

Ted bad, Mike Hill good? Got it

Didn’t Lutz have some deals where we mostly paid for him to be an assistant at one or more schools? I can’t remember the details, and realize the Sanchez contract might be structured differently. I agree that he would get offers.

I did too, really liked the Sanchez hire for several reasons, including what other coaches were saying about him, his emphasis on defense, and his experience (which was good for an assistant). Every hire is a risk, but this seemed like a better bet than most. One thing I didn’t consider at the time was how much transfers would come to dominate talent acquisition. I’ve long been down on relying too heavily on jucos and transfers, because of how hard it is to build continuity and teach effective schemes, and we kept getting players who would take time to settle in, and we’d end up with a year of production at best. But with how easy it is now for players to transfer out, I’m not sure slower builds are even possible at a place like Charlotte anymore, which makes me then question whether Sanchez’ schemes can work anymore if they take too much time to learn.

My being on Mike’s side is directly proportional to how he performs at his job. As someone who watches from way outside these are the only ways I can judge his job:

  1. Facilities Upgrades
  2. Donations and Increased Fanbase
  3. Big 3 Sports Performance

Right now…he’s drifting close to the 50th Percentile.

Chapel Hill and State maybe. UVA doesnt give two shits about us either way.

Let’s say UVA is recruiting a kid they want and he is leaning towards Charlotte. How do you think UVA is going to spin that one without being negative towards Charlotte? In general, we all know what kinds of garbage comes out of ACC mouths next. Now, that’s the guy you want to coach Charlotte?

The same shit they would say about any CUSA or soon to be AAC school. It wont be anything unique to us. because of a vendetta.

I don’t think so. Anybody else?

I just think it didn’t work out, nothing nefarious.

If I fault one thing about the hire it’s maybe he’s just used to having a top 20 recruiting class every other year and not used to having to take the borderline kid or finding a diamond in the rough.
