Mike Hill out as Charlotte AD effective immediately

“What should be done eventually, must be done immediately.” — former Florida AD Jeremy Foley (Mike Hill’s old boss).

We have arguably the worst football team in FBS mainly due to Mike Hill’s coach hiring decisions (not Albin). Basketball won three conference games last season. Fundraising is poor. Stadium expansion has not been handled well over the last seven years.

Time to move on!

You mean the only two sports that matter? And fundraising.

HWY 49 calling this a scapegoat firing and implying a lot of existential level issues in the program.

Jeremy also says that a new AD won’t like:

  1. Can’t touch the FB or MBB coaches

  2. New AD will operate under the spectre of having to tiptoe around Gaber or get canned (was not a performance firing)

  3. How does Tim Albin feel? He thought he was taking a job with an AD who just signed an extension.

Ok, but what has changed from a year ago when he got an extension and pay raise? Outwardly, not a lot! (Except that Albin’s tenure is off to a horrid start but apparently that did not factor in to the decision per Gaber’s own statement).

Oh boy, that’s not what I wanted to hear. I hadn’t thought about it that way but yea if Hill had this short of a leash he should never been allowed to make the Albin hire (even if he works out). Also his extension, it does not inspire confidence.

In the last 13 months basketball had a bad season. Football has been blown out in every FBS game. That’s what has changed.

Gaber told Hunter Bailey it had nothing too do with football performance. Seems weird.

Fearne was made full time coach before then. If you were looking at Hill’s record with hiring coaches, why give him the rope to hire Albin in the first place (by far the best “on-paper” hire he’s made, btw).

Also, MBB having a “bad season” - Like, the last 20 of them have been bad, my friend.

I think football can factor in if it’s the mistake of having 105 players instead of 120 or if it’s nil funds. I wouldn’t think the current record of a first year coach with injuries and such is a huge driver.

I have to wonder if the American Conference hasn’t called Gaber and asked “why are you so bad?”. With all the talk from the commissioner about private equity I can imagine businesses people don’t want to pay for dead weight teams.

FWIW aac commish was laughing and hanging out with Mike at the ESPN gameday festivities.

She has to say that though so as to not undermine Albin.

Jeremy has the attitude “little ole Charlotte sucks and should be content sucking”.

Sure. But again, if you were going to judge Hill by this football hire or have it be the final straw, even if not publicly, why even let him make it in the first place? Or, alternatively, why not at least wait until the end of the season before you make that judgment (not that I think it’s going to get better, but still).

Hill’s annual review certainly was not today of all days. He wasn’t on a PIP (if he was, seems like the extension was ill-advised). None of it adds up to picking today to make a change.

Honestly, Hunter is pretty good, but the other 2 members of that podcast have never impressed me at all…….I realize they dont care about my opinion

Not sure how every FBS conference decided on the 105 football roster cap per House, but the SEC went with 85 scholarships and 20 walk-ons.

Yeah, I personally do not care for most of his takes. He talks down to us and only knows college sports from an FSU fan’s perspective.

I think all three bring a very balanced perspective. Jeremy talks about us an outsider in the city which is needed. Currently we do suck that is how we’re seen by others.

One point Hunter made I agree with…. I feel bad for Albin. The season has sucked, so many injuries etc and now his AD is gone. That’s rough. Similar feelings for Fearne.

I like the podcast personally. I appreciate that they don’t just give a bunch of positive “fluff” around the school.

Personally, I feel that Hill was over his head with the expansion of facilities and with connection with prospective big donors. The expansions have come but at a lesser degree and delays, I assume due to the lack of funds generated from those Hill thought he could obtain. With all of the big money (banking as an example), Hill never could tap into this funding. Just thoughts looking from the outside.
