There was never an issue with hiring Ron Sanchez. The issue was extending him and forcing us to watch that awful brand of basketball for far too long. We got bailed out because he quit. If not we’d be stuck with him.
I’m with Ryan and I think this is a very reasonable take. Covid definitley screwed alot up for Healy and Sanchez. Mike probably didn’t handle it all the best but you can’t go back now. Covid still reminds me of the twilight zone.
I think Fearne will be successful and Biff will probably get at least another year unless something goes disasterously wrong. I’ll still be in the stands for both even though basketball is trying to price me out.
Ron Sanchez was a terrible hire. I’ve spoken to coaches at all levels. You can’t hire a guy that just lost to a 16 seed. You also have to look at the past. Alan Major was a P5 assistant. Mark Price was the gimmick NBA hire. Teams like UNCG, Western Carolina, JMU, etc… have all hired proven HC at the D1 level. At our level in basketball, you can 100% hire a successful Low to Low MM HC at Charlotte. Why Judy/Mike think they are above that is beyond me. Ron Sanchez was a crap hire and his record shows it. Guy quit and ran too. Every time our basketball job opens, countless HC’s inquire about. Mike’s ego makes him think out of the box. Ron had zero energy and wasn’t even a good X’s and O’s Coach. I’ll never forget the Belmont abbey game where he called losing a beautiful lesson.
We also hired Will Healy who was 13-21 at Austin Peay. That is directly on us for hiring a guy who goes by “Peep” and “Club Lit”
Our Motto is now - “Charlotte Athletics, where the scoreboard doesn’t matter”
Gaber drew the line. She doesn’t care and our university doesn’t care. We don’t prioritize the two sports that matter. I will evolve and not care as well. It’s sad, but is what it is.
Go Track and Field!
I agree 100% with what you said here regarding healy and ron. Neither hire, especially healy made sense. We can hire successful coaches, head coaches but we overthink it.
I didn’t like either of his football hires.
I liked the Sanchez hire at the time it happened.
I like Fearne, and want to believe Fearne can get it done, but I would have preferred to have waited until the end of the season. Given how the season finished out after he got his contract, I would have liked to gauged interest before giving it to Fearne. That said, it’s been said that DJ and Igor both knew they were leaving with several weeks left in the season and just went into self preservation mode so they didn’t get hurt and lose their big upcoming NIL deals ($350k & $600k).
Igor isn’t getting NIL unless the feds have changed the rules for foreign students. Of course, it is Tennessee and the SEC, so it is plausible.
That is the first I heard of this. That is very disappointing if true. I really thought There was a chance to bring both back. Where was that reported, or just someone with info on the boards?
A long time respected member here mentioned it on the Discord. Said one of the coaches told him that themselves.
The only sensible hire he’s made was Sanchez… It also happened that Sanchez is objectively a bad basketball coach who is best suited for the #2 chair.
0-2 in football
0-1 in hoops with a giant question mark for his second hire ( I still believe the Fearne extension was a panic move and should have waited till after the season)
We were told the big hole in Hill’s resume was fundraising. Thats been proven to be true. We haven’t advanced the ball in find raising.
Hoops is 91-90 with 0 legitimate post season appearances and have won exactly 0 CUSA/AAC tournament games. We somehow keep lowing the bar when it comes to Out of Conference scheduling that a slug will soon be able to clear it without effort.
Football is 20 -37 under Mike. We haven’t won a home game against an FBS team in nearly 2 full years… I’m guessing we have differing definitions of the concept of “Gold Standard” and “Excellence”.
I’m glad we are good in the 2nd tier sports, but (apologies to those involved)- they don’t move the needle one bit.
Hill is Sanchez in my mind… Good on paper, but couldn’t get it done. What really worries me is appears we have another Chancellor who doesn’t care to have successful athletics. Judy 2.0, CHP 2.0
Brutal. Cannot argue with the above.
I like Fearne though. We may have lucked into a pretty decent hire there.
I like Fearne too, but unfortunately since Mike sucks at fundraising, we need a coach that can bring in funds for himself to compete in today’s landscape. I’m not sure if Fearne has that in him. I hope he does because I do feel good about his actual coaching ability.
Is the Biff NIL money doing us much good?
He is getting nil. 500k
No because hes also coaching the team.
Yeah, the person im most disappointed in is gaber. Athletics did well at toledo under her watch, and she seemed to speak much different than phil with regards to sports. This move is insane
The only takeaway is - We aren’t serious about athletics, we aren’t going to be serious about athletics. If winning in revenue sports matters to you, this is not the program to follow.
Whether you think it’s a conspiracy to keep us in our place / not challenge the mothership or not doesn’t matter because the message is loud and clear. We aren’t going to compete in Football or MBB. Plain and simple. We aren’t serious about it.
Might as well be UNCW (sorry Seahawk fans).
Guess some schools have just decided to go ahead and do it and see if there are any repercussions later from the feds. Just remember Edey griping about it during the NCAAT but he’s definitely getting compensated much more now than he could have been at Purdue.
They’ve had quite a bit more recent success in MBB than we have. I’d trade our basketball program’s last 20 years for theirs. They’ve also managed that while spending a TINY FRACTION of the amount of money we are, even if you exclude football. It’s nauseating.
if you wanted to announce the hire after a football W (logical) then almost had to do it after the GW game. Who knows when the next W will come?
