One of my favorite players ever. One of the most naturally gifted athletes of all time.
Mayes-style catch by Clemson player vs Florida just last week in Omaha:
I saw this play when it happened. Great catch but not nearly so good as Mays. That Clemson player had the ball hit off the heel of his glove and he was able to trap it against his body, so some degree of luck. The thing about Willie’s catch is how quickly he wheeled and got the ball back to the infield. Say Hey to the angels
Headline I just saw:
Baseball immortal Willie Mays dead at 93.
Willie Mays glove. Where triples go to die.
Classic.

My mother had a colleague whose husband was a coach in the Reds organization during the “Big Red Machine” era of the 1970s. He was fortunate to miss most of the Schott ownership.

Still maybe the best deal ever made in sports history compared to what he was set to get.
Give me a $1.2 million annuity for the next 25 years. Please.
Okay, I wasn’t aware of this one… Apparently Chris Davis tops Bonilla, as he retired in 2021 at age 37, and gets the remainder of this contract over the next 13 years:
