I just sent an email to Judy Rose and Mike Hummer. They have nothing to do with the bookstore, but they have a vested interest in my allegiance to the school, and this is not how we build on that.
Hi Judy and Mike-
I am looking for a new license plate for the front of my car and went to the bookstoreâs websiteâlook at what I found. Now I am not an enthusiastic Tarheel hater, but I do think that we often suffer from being in their shadow and I would appreciate it if the bookstore could limit its school logo offerings to Charlotte merchandise. I realize that too many of our students would probably like to have a rug like this, but let them get it at Wal-Mart like all of the other Tarheel fans.
Just wanted to let you know, I got a quick response. I hope she doesnât mind me sharing it.
I could not agree more. We are checking on it.

Stuff happens, it is how you handle it that matters and it looks like the bookstore is all over this one.
We have already asked to have it removedâŚ.B&N just rolled out a new web site. Please know that our staff did not put this on our web site. Apparently in order to expedite getting items onto the web site (as you this has been a problem) the process now permits vendors to populate our site as soon as an item is orderedâŚ.best we can tell some vendor chose the wrong institution to place this item. Our staff have tried unsuccessfully to remove the item from web site. They are working with the corporate folks to accomplish such. Yes, you can assume we will be following-up on all of this. I went to Lowes and they had Large rugs, and it was a Tarheel one, and it had an advertisement of all the other collegiate rugs they had. They had BCS schools, no big deal, they had Saint Joes, Southern Illinois, okay i thought maybe they are bigger fans there than i thought.
Then i saw app state and NC A&T, okay they have football and a good following.
Then it got worse, Campbell, yes campbell. I thought I had surely hit the bottom.
clt says once again, whoever is in charge of the charlotte brand needs to go.
I would agree with this. However, that branding is not handled through athletics.
What? Someone getting our name mixed up with another school? NO WAY!
This is another school that goes by the 49ers talking about the origin of the name.
And the University of North Carolina, also the 49ers, began as a teaching center in 1946 was closed then âsavedâ in 1949 as a two-year college, was not ultimately a University until 1963. While it's not clear when the mascot was adopted, it couldn't have been prior to 1949 when the college was âsavedâ which is the motivation for the mascot name. Some UNC Charlotte history can be read here.
Atleast they get the rest of our story correct. This year's "49er New Year" shirts given out by OUR OWN SCHOOL didn't even get it right.

Does anyone remember UNC Charlotte has a Credit Card deal w/ MBNA/BofA?
I called to check on my acct., & the lady said, "I see youâre calling on youâre Alumni Association card for UNC."
What?
Kenny.... come on man! We are in the middle of a coaching change here and you bring up a credit card issue?
Hey now! Reports of name confusion are always welcomed. The school's name is just as important an issue as the status of our men's head coaching position.

Let me correct you: almost as important. If we were winning the national championship every year, it wouldnât be an issue, but as we all know, thatâs not likely.

I don't know if we can recruit a national championship winning coach. I think, realistically, the two are of equal importance. If we change the name it will increase spirit and respect, which could both realistically help our basketball. If we go far in the NCAA Tourney, we might finally get some love and not need a name change anymore.
