Obama’s '04 DNC speech sounded awful Republican to me.
Don’t understand what you mean by “sounding republican”…his platform is straight up the DNC’s pipeline.
His references to his religious center is more than you will here from other Democrats…but that hardly qualifies as “sounding republican”!
He is what the left has needed for about 8 years now.
What the left needs is to understand that paying higher taxes to cover broad social agendas is not what this country needs. Social programs need to decrease not increase. The federal government needs to get smaller. The taxation of the american worker is the new slavery. I work and work simply for the government to take my money and dole it out to others. Do I agree with everything that Bush has done? Absolutely not… but I do know that aslong as democrats run on a social platform I will never vote for any of them. I give plenty of money to those in need… the key being that I give them the money… it is not taken from me. The thought that if I ever succeed in making large amounts the government will take more of it is seriously disturbing. Tax rates need to continue to decrease and with that the budget… many programs need to be eliminated. The role of the federal government is to oversee the defense of the country and maintain civil rights… NOT to take care of each person who fails at life. There are organizations in place that do a much better job of that than the federal government could dream of doing.
Exactly what “social programs” would you like to see eliminated. I work for Mecklenburg County government and we get responses like these all of the time.
Do yourself a favor and go to charmeck.org and review their budget and get a look at how much money is spent on these dreaded social programs.
Or better yet…go to http://www.gpoaccess.gov/usbudget/fy04/sheets/fct_1.xls
and look at the federal budget to see how much these social programs are killing your taxes.
On average…social programs like food stamps and work first acount for less than 5 percent of an annual budget.
Pop Quiz…what is the #1 funded item in the U.S.
The United State Military
Here’s a good one for ya…in Mecklenburg County…We have a Budget of 773,282,967 dollars for FY 2004-2005.
DSS, the umbrella organization that deals with all of your Social programs like medicaid and medicare and foodstamps has a budget of 81,169,844.
Thats 10 percent of the county budget…hardly the drain you think it is!!!
obama has fantasized recently of being like a famous repub., like lincoln?
“In Lincoln’s rise from poverty, his ultimate mastery of language and law, his capacity to overcome personal loss and remain determined in the face of repeated defeat - in all this, he reminded me not just of my own struggles …” [Emph. added] problem is he is much more like lincoln's nemis Steven Douglas, also a Democrat.
Lincoln actually grew up dirt poor, literally. Lincoln was raised by his poor father and step mother.
Obama grew up middle class, raised mostly by his white grandparents. His Kenyan father left him and his White mother to attend school at Harvard. His mother remarried and moved to Indonesia. When she decided to stay there Obama was sent back to Hawaii to live with his white grandparents…not exactly like growing up dirt poor in a log cabin like lincoln. Lincoln attended one room school houses on the frontier and taught himself law. Lincoln taught himself law, Obama attended Punahou School, Hawaii’s top prep academy and later Columbia University and Harvard Law School(like his blood father who fled to Kenya afterwards)
Obama also supported Live Birth Abortion bill in Illinois, he’s no republican even though he’d like to paint himself as one after one year in the senate. another big difference is Lincoln had a very slow and tough rise to prominence, Obama rose quickly like Douglas.
Pop Quiz....what is the #1 funded item in the U.S.The United State Military
Could have told you that and it is worth every penny. I do not mind my money being spent to protect me and this country interests. That said I am well aware that they may not be the best stewards of my money either.
I do however mind my money being spent at the local, state and federal level for entitlement programs that I do not believe in and that the government does a poor job of running.
Rising Payroll Tax Rates: Intermediate Projections. Social Security and Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) benefits are funded by a 15.3 percent payroll tax on wages (12.4 percent for Social Security; 2.9 percent for Medicare). Payouts to current retirees currently consume only 10.4 percent of payroll, so Social Security is running a small surplus and will continue to do so until 2017 — one year less than projected in last year’s report — when it will dip into permanent and progressively larger debts. If we assume payroll tax rates rise to meet our funding obligations, the burden on future workers will be large:When today’s college students reach retirement age in 2050, their children and grandchildren will face a payroll tax rate of about 16.8 percent to pay their Social Security benefits — a 37 percent increase over today’s rate.
When Medicare Part A is included, the payroll tax burden will rise to 24.5 percent — almost one of every four dollars workers will earn that year.
In addition to these two programs, taxpayers will also have to provide three quarters of Medicare Part B benefits (Supplementary Medical Insurance; participant premiums offset a quarter of the cost) and 88 percent of the cost of Medicare Part D, the newly enacted Medicare prescription drug program (participant premiums offset only about 12 percent of Part D costs). Also, taxpayers fund seniors’ medical bills through other government programs, including Medicaid and the Veterans Health Administration.Although the costs for all these programs are paid from general revenues and state transfers, they can be expressed as a percentage of taxable payroll:
If the federal and state government shares of Medicare Part B and Part D are added to Social Security and Medicare Part A, the burden on workers will climb to 34.6 percent by 2050 — more than one in three dollars of taxable payroll.
When other government-funded health care for the elderly (programs like Medicaid and the Veterans Administration) is added, the total burden will reach 38.9 percent by mid-century.
Thus, almost 40 percent of the wages workers earn in 2050 has already been committed to pay benefits promised under current law. That’s before any bridges or highways are built and before any teachers’ or police officers’ salaries are paid. If any new entitlement benefits such as more generous prescription drug coverage or long-term care benefits are added, the future burden will be even higher.

This is JUST medicare and social security. Add in ANY other programs and you are talking a HUGE chunk of a paycheck.
The major problem with the government is there is no one held accountable. One person gets voted out and another in but nothing changes. When you finally get someone in office willing to make the painful cuts (Arnold in Cali) he gets villified. There is NO incentive for any department or program to come in UNDER budget. If they come in under budget they face possible cuts in funding so each group seeks to spend atleast what their budget is. I operated a non-profit and this is not the way it is run… you are supposed to make do with less, not do more with more. The gravey train just runs and runs and as citizen you have no power to change it. The politicians offer more and more and simply tax the workers more and more to make it happen. Even the schools are awful… they tax more on a local/state level to support the schools, which seems like a good idea because the teachers are paid dirt. Next thing you know the school administration has swelled teachers are still being paid dirt. This country seriously needs to reinvent itself from the ground up.
i would love to know the source of your quote…
you still are not addressing my point…that the federal and local governments budgets…who are determined by tax dollars…allot only 10 percent of the budget to these horrible social programs that so many Americans benifit from.
Your “expert” quote seems to be working off of the assumption that these figures will exist if social security reform is not enacted. Anyone who knows ANYTHING about the current trends in SS reform knows that reform is in dire need and is coming VERY SOON!!! Stop getting your info fed to you from Rush!!! Look up your info from the U.S Treasury or look at the goings on of Senate sub commititees. Far more accurate.
Another great little tidbit that most people tend to want to leave out in talking about this is how medicaid and ssi/ssa is paid out and to whom. The majority of payments are paid out to those claiming disability…followed by the elderly…NOT PEOPLE WHO HAVE FAILED IN LIFE!!!
Additionally…horrible social programs that are “abused by minorities who take advantage of the system” like Food Stamps stimulate the economy. For every 5 dollars paid out in Food Stamps…it generates 9 dollars in economic growth in the local community…being that they are only allowed to use these funds for the purchase of food…a driving force in our global economy.
If this is the route the NCAA chooses, all schools should be forced to choose a plant or non-animate nickname. They’ve crossed the line this time and I hope somebody kicks their @$$ in court.
Quoting myself above for emphasis. Well, North Dakota is after the NCAA. Hopefully they’ll win their case or force the NCAA to invoke a ban on all group mascots. If they force the latter, the NCAA will back down because there are too many schools that will be included.

we are fortunately a highway, highways don’t have feelings.
its a joke.
?
anyways… since there are still miners… will Norm be banned? Geez… im sorry political activists who argued for the ban… they dont really care about the indians as mascots… they just want to use their power. Its like short people who got picked on their whole life… they get a little power say in the army or in a corporate enviroment, all of a sudden its the 4rth riech…
I was up in central Illinois a couple weeks ago… sounds like this could be the last year of Chief Illiniwek. Although, Illinois will remain the Fighting Illini there will be no more chief.
Halftime at Illini games is just awesome when the chief makes his brief appearance on the field.

Are they going to make them drop this logo too, Apex, or just the human representation of him at the games?

They removed that logo from unis awhile back, but my wife’s uncle who is connected said that could be gone. Therefore, my wife (illini grad and all of her family) are eager to buy lifetime supply of gear featuring the chief.
Seriously, this is crazy because university administrators, alums and fans treat the chief with almighty respect unlike the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, etc. The human respresentation does a serious war dance at halftime and then excuses himself…hes not a normal mascot. The person who is the chief has to spend the entire summer on a reservation learning customs, etc.
North Dakota reached a settlement with the NCAA. It basically states that they have three years to get approval from the tribe or they will then be banned from postseason play if they continue using the Sioux nickname. I hope this means that North Dakota thinks they can get that approval. Otherwise, it appears that they’re just buying time for the inevitable bull**** decision.

Meanwhile, all teams with animate nicknames have three years to get approval from PETA or they will have to change their nicknames.

I haven’t even read the article, but I like what I read in your post. I like how the settlement sounds… the tribe getting power in the decision… Isn’t that how it should be?

Maybe they can use this to get a casino.
Under the terms which were announced Friday morning, the University of North Dakota must obtain approval from the Spirit Lake Tribe and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to continue using their current Fighting Sioux nickname, logo, and imagery. The Spirit Lake Tribe and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe have significant presence in the state of North Dakota, and approval must be obtained from both tribes within three years. Otherwise, the University of North Dakota — which has been decidedly steadfast in its stance since the initial NCAA ruling against nicknames deemed “hostile and offensive” — will have to transition to a new nickname and logo.
