Okay, I’ll give you an example of a word invented and used by a group of people that came to mean something derrogatory to a subset of the inventing and using group.
I’ll use pictures, and let you guys figure out the word. If you don’t think it’s derrogatory, then ask yourself why this message bored filters out all but the first letter of the word.
and
Do I have a point? Not really. Except that neither does NinerOne. A word can be coined by anyone and over time the accepted meaning of that word can change. That’s the point.
What’s this have to do with the NCAA ban on Indian mascots? Depends. Just ask the person or persons the mascot represents if the mascot brings feelings of hurt and resentment. Seminoles obviously doesn’t. I can’t imagine why Fighting Sioux does either. But Redskins? I can see where that can bother natives.
At a minimum, we now have some Erik Estrada to lighten the mood of this thread.
Hey Officer Pancherello! I think I can trace my love of motorcycles to CHiPs! Always liked it when Panch would take his big police cruiser out on the dirt and started jumping stuff!
It is not a stereotype to state that Alcoholism is rampant among the native american populations…you would be stating fact.
Such is the fact that 1 in 4 African American males will end up in jail. This is a fact. It becomes a stereotype when you generalize these facts onto an entire culture.
The real question is why these statistics exists! Is it just a fact that Native Americans are gonna drink their tails off or are their underlying issues. Same for the African Americans. Are they simply a more violent culture, or could it have something to do with unexplained injustices like:
The fact that on average: Blacks spend 3 more years in jail then their white counterparts for the same offenses.
Blacks spend 4 years longer in prison for drug related crimes than their white counterparts…FOR THE SMAE CRIMES!!!
Blacks spend 4 years longer in prison for drug related crimes than their white counterparts.....FOR THE SMAE CRIMES!!!!
OK You fight the fight to have the crimes punished the same. Me? I will fight the fight for them not to do the crime in the first place! This is what I mean… fight the fight where it is needed… which is don’t do the crime!
Certainly our primary concern is to destroy these fundamental problems. However, in a country that promotes fair and equitable justice…we certainly cannot just overlook these glaring injustices!!!
To simply ignore these facts only angers those who are affected by their repercussions!
actually the Smithsonian “redskin” link came from a “minority’s”(I consider her AMERICAN though) blog(michelle malkin) that i was reading regarding another matter but came accross that story, the quote I used was her’s but I knew some would take it as something an “ignorant white male republican/conservatie” whatever would say. link
when I watch Lord of the Rings, I can’t help but think of this whole theme of distorted past history(“they took your land”)… whether its in comparison to the native americans trying to get tax exempt casinos and reservations, slavery reparations or palestinians taking israel…
why people can’t realize they live in the greatest country ever, have unlimited opportunities and all they have to do is seize them and stay on the right side of the law, I dont know. you can easily live a middle class lifestyle here, although lack of parenting needs to be addressed. the funny thing about getting upset over past history is you are ultimately upset over your very existience. if not for everything that happened in the past, good and bad, your ancestors would’nt have met to conceive your bloodline and ultimately you at specific points in time…think about it.
Whites disown the Klan because it's a bad representation.

unless you are a certain US Senator with a D next to your name from W.V., then you can come out with a book that says you have "fond memories" of your time in the Klan as Grand Kleagle and not get called on it by the PC police. :D
Casstommy, I need some insight since you seem to be sharp on your minority issues. Why are black males who try to make good grades called “white” by their black counterparts? This is nothing new, as a couple of my friends were criticized back when I was in high school for “acting white” (a term used by other black students who disliked my friends). This was because their parents were strict with them, they made good grades, and stayed out of trouble. They were also both great athletes, so it wasn’t because they were “nerdy”. A friend of mine is a teacher at that same high school now, and she tells me that one of our better football players is outcast for the same reasons by many other black students. Why is it uncouth for a black male to make good grades and stay out of trouble? Jealousy? How is he “selling out”, and if so, what is he “selling out” from? I’m just curious because I do not understand the brilliant philosophy used by these folks.
Yea…this is an very unfortunate trend in all minority cultures. Sociologists are split on their thinking of this issue, and their ideas are extremely “heady” and in depth dealing with an overprotection of their culture due to a history of oppression. However, “intra-ethnic” discrimination seems to be growing at an alarming rate.
Additionally…it is not just discrimination based off of action…like the one you mentioned above…but also based off of skin tone (a “light skined” African American being ostracized from her “darker” counter-parts.) It is a sad and unfortunate but seems to be limited to urban settings.
We can combine what casstommy & wbniner says.
Yes work to make all sentences equal based on color, but in the meantime, don’t do the crime, & you want have to be the one suffering. The best of what both of you are saying.
Collin Cowherd was talking about the PBS show yesterday on his show. It shocked the hell out of me because ususally that guy is a tool. He was talking about how much the program opened up his eyes. Just thought it was cool for him to say that.
Kind of like the word "woman." If you knew every word in the english language but "woman" and heard stonecoldken using it, you'd think very quickly it's a derrogatory term.
From the stupid book I’m studying from right now:
“‘You’re going to fail the next exam’ may be indicating concern, frustration, sympathy, alarm, humor, or indifference, depending on the tone of voice.”
It seems to me like his voting record is pretty much in line with his values. He tends to come off as almost the Democrat answer to the religious right…a “religious left” so to speak. He is first and foremost a Democrat…and his speeches only solidify this fact. That being said…I would expect for the conservatives to give him low scores.
He is what the left has needed for about 8 years now.
