Can anyone explain to me what exactly is the deal with it being so difficult to get our stuff?? I've heard things about liscensing, but anyone know the details?
okay - Iām just throwing this out there⦠but is it possible that our school size is to large for a smaller clothing company who would do merch for a school like campbell, so we have to go with a larger company. Only when with a larger company you have to buy more merch from the provider at one time, only there arent enough people who are willing, or want to buy shirts and things of that nature except for 2 times a year⦠Basketball season, and right before school starts back up.
I have no earthly idea how the clothing industry works in this respect, but I think its a relatively logical explanation for the problem. The solution? pft.

Iāve heard that it is a huge pain to get permission to use our logo for some reason.
Use of the logo is not really that big of a deal if a company is already a manufacturer of clothing items.
There are TONS of companies that are licensed to make products with our logo on it. Either they arenāt using their licenses, arenāt in business anymore, or arenāt interested in marketing the Niners stuff.
If we could just get the companies that already have licenses to sell the stuff, weād be in a lot better position.
If I was older I would get this⦠Return address stamp with 49ers Logo in the middle.

$50!:wow:
If I mailed more stuff I would still buy it. I actually like that thing.
Anybody wanna get an order together, if we get 10 orders we pay only $500 according to the website

Call Dickās store manager and ask what the deal is. I hate to say it but I think demand is still the big issue. They are just hesitant to order large quantities because they donāt think they can sell it.

fixed
There is no reason that the quality and quantity of items sold on campus should be so poor as well.

No one buys the little stuff they actually have at Dicks because it always says UNC Charlotte or North Carolina Charlotte or something of that sort. I always look for Charlotte stuff every time Iām in there and I bought the 1 decent looking hat they had. All the other crap was either hideous and/or it had āUNCā all over it. Every Dicks I got ot now has fewer and fewer Niner stuff. They are down to a handful of hats hidden on the back rack behind the State UNC, Duke, Bobcats, and Panthers hats.
HP is right. Someone at OUR school is the problem.
I graduated in 2004 and since then I have worked for the University Stores at Wake Forest and the amount of Wake apparel compared to Charlotte is laughable and depressing at the same time. We could take just our Nike apparel from Wake and fill the entire Bookstore at Charlotte. We have Greg Norman, Under Armour, Russell, Adidas, Champion, at one time Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, and other vendors with the Wake logoā¦and itās not just the vendors but the amount of stuff we have. We have presently 3 stores on campus, plus another store at Hanes Mall, Charlotte has the bookstore, which I went in about three weeks ago, and was just depressed at the lack of merchandise to buy. The selection was pathetic and for any alum coming back, you just wonder why there is so little to choose from. I know Wake is an ACC school, but what we have is unexcusable, for every hat or sweatshirt, or t-shirt Charlotte has, multiply that by 10 and thatās what Wake has. It is a disgrace and should be addressed immediately, via the student body, or by alums, like myself, through emails or phone calls to the Stores Director at Charlotte.
Welcome to the board, gniner1! You are so right, Wake Forest has an outstanding selection of items. There might me more Deacon apparel in the tiny space at Bridger Field House than there is in the UNCC bookstore.
Folks, heās correct. Take a drive up I-40 to Hanes Mall and check out the Deacon Shop. Then drive on over to Greensboro on Wendover Avenue and visit The Conference Store. It will amaze you.

fixed:biggrin:
Wake Forest is a much different animal than UNC Charlotte.
But HP, was it like this 15 years ago? I mean I know they have had successful athletics for a long time, but did they used to struggle with the same things that Charlotte did 2 decades ago? (recognition in the town, local newspapers focused on UNC) My memory of Wake goes back to about Randolph Childers, and that is about it.
If so they would be a great model to follow. It is impressive how a couple thousand student pivate school has really taken over a large city like Winston-Salem.
Felt, I had lunch Sunday at La Hacienda, 2-3 doors down from The Conference Store. I came home and was violently ill from the back side. Perhaps it was from seeing all the App State, East Carolina and ACC stuff that caused my discomfort.

I thought you were going to say you met an agressive tarheel fanā¦
Hi-O!
ID, Wake Forest has marketed itself first to the city of Winston-Salem and now to Greensboro, High Point and Kernersville as āthe Team of the Triad.ā Itās working.
There were extra seats available when the Joel opened before that time, ID. Many of WFUās season ticket holders purchased tickets for one reason⦠for the Duke and/or UNC-Chapel Hill games. Some still do that. As Over40 and others will tell you, itās never a problem to find a ticket outside at LJVM. But they have sold a gazillion tie-dyed shirts in support of the basketball team.
Football is a different animal, primarily because theyāve not consistently had winning seasons. Any year with 5 wins used to be a success. The end zone hill used to be closed off except for a rare large home crowd. Deacon Hill was started as a family program, 2 adults and 2 kids for the low price of $75 total for 6 games, or $3.13/game! It was pushed hard and it was immediately successful. Now the hill is almost solid blankets at every home game. The price has gone up to $100 for the package, which is still a deal.
The students were moved to the visitorās side in a different configuration, freeing up more season tickets on the home side. They were also given their own (and closest to the entrance) parking lot to tailgate in. Two goal-line sections were sold as packages for $100 per season ($16.67/game) and a 30-yd line section on the visitorās side was sold at 2/3 the regular season price.
Today, there is an area set up for kids to play at with inflatables. The band comes through and the pregame radio show is hosted from there. Itās all marketing at its best.
The attitude is if you get the fans there, theyāll return. If they buy an inexpensive package, theyāll spend money on concessions and they do so.
Wake Forest football games, wins or losses, are truly an event in Winston-Salem.

Make a product that looks nice. If its athletics, make it say Charlotte, not UNC Charlotte. Stop with the NASCAR style, 15 different graphics on one shirt. I want a green shirt that has in white block letters āCHARLOTTEā. Canāt find it, never could.
And thatās the reason we started making Niner Nation shirts.
And you know, people complained about those too. Said they were too expensive, that we should just give them away for free. Gotta love our fans.
Iāve heard that it is a huge pain to get permission to use our logo for some reason.
It is and it is very expensive. If we had made shirts with the Pickaxe logo on it, it would have cost us a fortune if we wanted to sell shirts at an affordable price.

Maybe you had something different, but thats not the case that I have heard. I got this from the department:

What we have heard from retailers about why they donāt carry Charlotte 49er merchandiseā¦

āWe canāt carry UNC Charlotte merchandise because the school hasnāt released their marks.ā

Answer: This is not true. There are currently 143 manufacturers licensed for the Charlotte 49ers (that have the 49er logos) and if there is a company that the retailer would prefer to buy from, CLC can help get them licensed too (assuming they arenāt). You may want to look around the store and try to determine if any of the licensees they buy from are licensed for the University.

āCharlotte merchandise doesnāt sell well.ā

Answer: Let us know if the product isnāt selling well and we will do everything we can to drive traffic to your location. We are currently in the process of pooling University resources in order to proactively promote retailers that carry our merchandise. This is a partnership and we want to help move Charlotte merchandise as much as you do.

āWe have a difficult time finding a licensee, or a licensee with low minimums.ā

Answer: We currently have 143 licensees producing our merchandise, so one of those should be able to help you. You can also order items from The Collegiate Exchange that have lower minimum order requirements. If there is an item you are looking for and you donāt know where to get it, let us know and we will try to help you.

āWe donāt carry UNC Charlotte product because the University only wants the Bookstore carrying their merchandise.ā

Answer: That isnāt true. The University wants as many retailers as possible carrying their merchandise.

āItās too expensive to get licensed.ā

Answer: It costs $50 for a Local License and $250 for a Standard License.
