New swine flu

I’ll worry in 3 years when it turns bad.
But I think the 36,000 people who die of regular flu is exaggerated. How many of those were already sick with pneumonia, old age, Aids, cancer, etc. Flu might have put the death over the top, but I find it hard to believe that that many died of flu by itself. I’d say almost all had to have some other factor involved. I’m not a doctor, but I’ve had the flu before, & I was nowhere near death.

In all seriousness, I really don’t know what to make of this whole thing yet.

However, I just spent 15-20 minutes watching CNN, while donating blood, and they made it sound like the end of the world will happen soon.

It depends on which soothsayer or Koresh-like religious sector you talk to today. I just want to know what the winner of that pool receives.

my conspiracy theory would tie to this story from a few months back:

Mexico partially shut down for five days:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/04/30/2556965.htm?section=world

“This morning US President Barack Obama said there were no plans to close America’s border with Mexico.”

It would be akin to closing the barn door after the horses are out because we already have cases here in the United States.
Seems to me this logic is flawed. Some of the horses are certainly still in the barn I think. We can still prevent further spread. I don't know how serious it is - something about me makes me not very scared of a flu - but I think it is more so that our government isn't scared of this thing rather than using faulty logic cited by Barry. ..I know, I may be giving the government too much credit.

you are talking about millions of potential voters for the democratic party, we cannot offend them.

…and millions of cheap workers for Republican voters.

All I know is if I miss my brothers graduation next week because they stop domestic flights out of texas (being discussed, and we already have a case here in Austin) because of our confirmed cases, when they could have controlled the borders a week and a half ago, I will be furious. I mean hey why inconvenience mexicans illegally (or even legally) crossing the border when you can inconvenience americans!!

Oh and with everything shut down there for 5 days, don’t you think more people will be trying to cross over here…

That being said, I think this is being blown out of proportions and people are freaking out over something that is killing people in THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES.

...and millions of cheap workers for Republican voters.
who is making the call not to shut the border?

Well, the CDC and the WHO have both stated that shutting the border down will have no effect on transmission. But I’m sure they are more interested in helping the Dems pick up a few more seats in 2010.

An piece I read yesterday said that just a 5 percent reduction in air travel cost the US economy over 100 billion dollars. Air travel from US to Mexico is something like 4000 flights A DAY. Seems like a lot to give up for something that will have no effect at all.

you posting a link once in a while would be nice.

I am so glad that the politicized CDC has stated that closing the borders would have no impact.

How much would it cost america if we had to close businesses like they are doing in Mexico?

you posting a link once in a while would be nice.

Wow, ok. This isnt what I saw last night, but it has the same stuff in in.

Well I don’t agree with you about the CDC being very politicized, but I won’t argue that point. What about the WHO? Do you think they have an agenda also?

A lot I would imagine.

This thing is global, it's in several countries other than Mexico, and it would've gotten to those countries even if the border with Mexico had been shut down a month ago. Even if there is another more deadly strain out there, it would still probably make it to other countries and then into the US. Should we end all traffic in and out of the US to every other country in the world?

One 2007 study by the Brookings Institution estimated, for example, that a 95% reduction in U.S. air travel would cost the economy $100 billion a year.

links are helpful

My throat hurts. Do I have it?

If you click on the link and zoom to the whole world, highlight over each case. Common thread is that the people who have it were in…MEXICO. I am not saying it could be contained, hell I don’t even think it is as bad as everyone thinks, as it hasn’t killed anyone who is not from a third world country. I am sure it will move around the world anyway, i mean most viruses do, but if we slow it even a little it allows more time for scientists to come up with ways to combat it.

dood links are not helpful if they don’t prove your point and actually help to prove the point of the person that you are trying to say is wrong. You should know this man!

so there is no difference in a 5% reduction and a 95% reduction?
