Newberry Postgame

101-88. The first 30 min weren’t pretty.

Down 14 points at about the 12 min mark in the second half and then went on a ~32-3 run. We came back when we drove to the basket and not settle for jump shots.

After White hit his first 5/7 3s to open the game the shooting went cold. BO and Davis picked it up during our run back to get back in the lead.

Not sure what to take from this game. I suppose treat is as an exhibition and the guys have to get the nerves out and give the coaches some tape to look at and correct the mistakes.

JC Washington has good size and prob gonna be our big man in the middle unless Benas plays. Washington looks like Pierre Henry.

Q Jackson looked good. Another good freshman that you can see the athletism there and there could be a special player in 3-4 years.

Price looked descent but want to see him against better competition. looked like a good 7 guy off the bench.

Reid is a hustler. Def has put on size. Should be able to bang down low and fight for rebounds and put backs.

The swede… I wanna see more just to see but could be another year.

Majority of the players looked lost on defense. Hopefully that’s an easy fix by the coaches. Sloppy turnovers by the guards.

Vanhook needs to sit the bench.

Davis was trash until the last ten minutes.

Newberry played with so much more hustle and heart than we did.

We win. Good. Tighten up that D though.

We avoided catastrophe. It’s tough to get a read from this game, but obviously we’re going to have to play much better to go 2-0 next week.

3/4 of the game we looked like crap. The last 1/4 we looked very good. I’ll take a W any day, over anyone.
We do need to play better, however. More team ball, please.

I am absolutely EXHAUSTED after watching the last 8 minutes of play. Yes it all started when we started to look at dribble-penetrate over 3-pt shots, however, THEN we finally started to show some D. We started crashing the boards after their shots and getting fast break points. I think THAT’S what sparked the 32-3 run to put us up for good.

Davis was Guevarra-esque! En fuego in the 2nd half.

Rough start. But pleased we saw the team towards the end of last year, in the last ten minutes. Newberrys style is unique. We are bad at what they are good at…(on ball defense–beating off the dribble). Once Jon turned it on we got going. I expect us to play much better against Elon. We will be able to run sets, which means we will be able to put more size in the game.

Ps-- teams like to shoot on us. They shot 50% from three. Most of which were contested.

My take: their team subs the entire bench every few minutes or so which I thought was strange. Their #0, little guy made us look silly at times. White was on fire in the beginning. Brax has such a quick release, very curry-esque. Davis was a big lift in 2nd half. Def going to need to improve playing against tougher comp. Also my initial thoughts during the first half is that we should be blowing this team out of the water…

clt had this one.

How about we never schedule a D2 game for the regular season ever again.

Without JC Washington, this team would be bottom half of C-USA. With him, we can be top 4. He’s not very good, but he is the emotional leader and tone setter. He is scrappy and can rebound. I think he’s the most essential part to this squad. Lose anyone 1-3, replace them with QJ. Lose him, where do we go? If not Benas or Garvin, it would be UGLY.

I echo this sentiment. This game is the definition of a lose/lose, I don’t care how many kids of the AD are on the roster.

lets not forget it was Newberry’s second game of the day, they played a full game Friday morning and then us at night. Of course they were going to wear down late in the 2nd half and that’s why they sub’ed in groups of 5.

Always good to win and not play your best. Exposed many areas that need focus

A Division 2 team on 7 hours rest led us deep into the 2nd half. Disgraceful.

Too early in the season to tell how good we’ll be, but I agree “disgraceful” is a good way to describe our play in the first 32 minutes of the game. The final 8 minutes looked like a completely different team.

From what I saw last night, I’m a little worried about our defense and rebounding. The loss of Uchebo was obviously painful.

Considering the addition of all the new guys how long will it take this team to learn to play together? It took last seasons team almost until January.

Interesting that Benas and Garvin didn’t play at all. Both of them had their moments in the Canadian games. Bergang only played two minutes. We simply won’t have a rim protector if one of the 7 footers doesn’t develop. Also, is Ryan Murphy red shirting? He was a late signee and we are guard heavy now.

He didn’t look awful but he had 0 wow moments.

A d2 team tied us in rebounding. That’s badddddddd.

He had a couple of nice blocks…one was a volleyball spike when he rotated to help on the weak side. He’s just an athletic big…he’s our thickest big…and our most athletic big. Not sure how often he’ll wow us…but his size, beef and athleticism will definitely be needed this season in the post. Without a doubt we need him.

Must have not been watching the game. Like I said, he’s not very good, but he does every little thing for this team. A few blocks, good rebounding, very scrappy, emotional leader. Why can he not be a rim protector?
