I have been to two games so far this year, and know that we are lacking a couple of key players to be successful. I think our main problems this year is lack of inside players, and lack of a defensive stopper. I know we should {hopefully} get Phil next year and one JUCO who has already signed, but we are losing EJ and Dumptruck. I just do not see us being any stronger inside, plus losing DA as a decent defensive guy is not going to help. I do not know of anyone that may step up and be a stopper on defense either. I can see next year being worse than this year. We should improve the following year as we get some age on our current freshman class and incoming class. Any thoughts or does anyone think we will sign another inside player in late signing period. Seems like we are only looking at wing players again. Will Lewis leave an open up another spot?
thanks for dampening a nice snowy day.
Lets think about this.
Givens:
C Phil Jones
SG: Leemire Goldwire
G: Ian Andersen/Carlos Williams.
I guess our forwards are our big questions. Maybe Dewhurst gets one and one of the recruits will be the other (did An’Juan recommit?). If so I’d bet he’d go in the other hole.
We’ll be more athletic but we won’t be as good offensively. Should be better defensively. More length and athleticism on the floor.
a lot of people say that we will be worse next year but I think we’ll be about the same, if anything we might be better.
PG: Gerrity, with a year of learning the system/practicing with the team. Upgrade.
SG: Lee, senior year, won’t be playing the PG at all, minimal upgrade.
SF: Dewhurst, year in the system, downgrade from DA.
PF: ?, obvious downgrade.
C: Phil Jones, Major Upgrade. The guy could be Martin Iti II and it would be an upgrade. Aside from a few clutch rebounds, and anyone over 6’6 could get them, williams and dumptruck don’t add that much to this team, except 10 fouls and 20 min.

aren’t those always our problem?
aren’t those always our problem?
And playing defense…and chucking up 3’s…and having no set plays…etc. But on a different note I just wanted to say how great I think E.J’S been this year. The guy is playing way out of position, sat out a whole year with injuries, and gives it his all every game. What I wouldn’t give to have him for 1 more year, man!
Next year. We will suck more

We have 3 signed for next year, 6’6" - 6’9". Wilderness (FR Patterson prep 6’6"), Ngoundo (FR 6’7"), and Whitehurst (Jr 6’9") have all SIGNED with us. Wildnerness should split time at the SF/PF. Ngoundo has the reach of a 7 footer, can block shots and rebound. Whitehurst is EJ type player.

PG - Carlos Williams / Michael Gerrity / J Lew
SG - Leemire / Ian
SF - AnJuan / Charles / Sean Phaler
PF - Gaby / Eric Whitehurst / David Booker / + 1 more
C - Phil Jones (once he resigns)
Walk On - Kyle Church / Chris ? don’t know his last name he is a power forward
this is what we are looking at for next year. i see david booker working a lot over the summer to improve his speed and endurance along with gaby who appears to be in the same boat as david. eric whitehurst in my opinion will have the exact same style of year as ej did his first year at charlotte. anjuan might have to step up in the power foward spot which would put dewhurst at the 3. I think los williams finally gets his head out of his butt and becomes a very intense player. Michael will add onto a lot after the spring semester next season. Gaby might be coming off the bench but i see him doing a lot of damage on the defense side of the ball with his ability to shot block (he will eventually lead the niners all time shot blocking). so hopefully this will be the way things pan out.
I hope you’re right about Ngoundo. I hope Ian can round out his game a bit more too. He’s a pretty good 3 point shooter, but 90+% of his shots this year have been 3’s.

From my observations moxley has already almost perfected ian's form its just he has to get the accuracy down. Then we have plavich jr. so hopefully he at least learns how to play defense so guys don't have to cheat over to help him out for a fear that he's going to get burned every play.
i compare Eric whitehurst to EJ because EJ didn’t have a phenominal first season and the red shirt season for ej helped wonders in EJ’s game. I think Eric will come and put maybe 6 to 10 points a game max and have about 5 rebounds. I think gaby and phil are going to be our work horses next year. Phil has a decent mid range shot as well as an ok long range shot from what i hear. so this team is definitely going to be interesting.

EJ was pretty good his first season. He averaged 10 a game as our 6th man and had some pretty big games in coference play. His 2nd redshitrt season was the sucky one.
As for Ian. His shot is ok. His form is a little too slow on the release. I still think he’s a little flat footed when he shoots and would like to see him work on his shot inside the arc. However he has great arc and rotation on his shot and those are the 2 big things.
I hope we never see Phil’s long range shot and very little of his mid range shot. I want someone in the post to score down low or grab offensive boards. I just read some stuff on Ngoundjo and found it amazing that he has a 7’3 wingspan and is only 6’7.
well the thing about ej was that he didn’t produce a lot during his first season because curtis casted a HUGE shadow against him. He was a decent player but i don’t think Eric will do just that. I think Eric might potentially have to red shirt a season as well because he had back problems a season a go if i remember correctly so he might have to get that fixed as well. But hopefully that has went a way.
From what i understand phil likes the inside game but if he can’t produce on the inside i think he might be able to step out a little bit and make shots away from the basket.
Next year could be worse. Like it or not it could be. We’re losing two of our best players in D’Angelo and EJ. I am honestly against us going after JUCO’s. Most of them for whatever reason can’t get it done at this level in my opinion with the exception of EJ. I know I am alone in this but I really believe that.

Actually like it or not i really liked chris nances ability to draw charges. He was always found in the right spot to make a quick shift to draw a charge. Which made him one of the more underrated players on our team last year.

If Eric can do half of what EJ did his first season I’ll be satisfied. Having a JUCO come in and give you 10 ppg in his first season is rare. EJ didn’t score because we had Curt, Eddie and Plavich. However he had a nice niche in the offense.

The way I see it.
C Gaby and Big Phil will have to split time at C. Young centers typically aren’t able to stay in the game because of conditioning/foul trouble. This is scary if anything happens to either one.
PF If Whitehurst can’t be a presence immediately, alot of pressure will be on Booker to transform himself before next year to learn to be a beast down low. If not, the team will be too small again, with Wilderness or Phaler getting looks at PF.
SF Dewhurst and Wilderness. The medical redshirt for Dewhurst is probably a blessing. Him forcusing for next year could make him a decent defender. Hopefully, Wilderness can pick up the system quickly because he will have to play inside some and outside some.
SG Leemire and Ian. They will be able to play more of a SG role. But Leemire can create his own shot, so should be no problem.
PG Carlos and Gerrity. Carlos will have to run the show until January. Gerrity might take some actual game time in order to pick up the system. Learning PG for the system solely from practice is probably too much to ask for. But Lee can also switch when needed with Ian and Dewhurst helping at SG.
I don’t see why people say we will be worse down low next year. We are losing EJ, who is putting up a superhuman effort every night, but we are gaining Phil and Gaby, who actually have Center size for the A10. And we are gaining Whitehust, PF size. We lose some experience (the equivalent of two sophomores and a junior, since all the down low presence are JUCO’s), but more raw size down low will do wonders.
Gaby at 6’7" playing center may sound ridiculous, but we already have Coleman playing center at 6’7". And people will hark on losing DA, but does anybody see much of a difference between Lee being a focal point and DA other than height?
