The baseball team plays Fordham today at 2:00 and tomorrow at noon. These are conference games, so they are very important. We need to finish in the top 2 in the conference to get a first round bye.
I’m thinking about going to the game and then possibly leaving early to watch part of the Lady Niners’ game at Picasso’s.
Well, we turned it around them today. Baseball is a sport where a pitcher can dominate and the all the bats can be going at once. If it happens, 13-1 can happen.

Bingo. We won the league last year, and we lost one to Fordham 10-0. Their pitchers were on point, and we couldn’t get anyone out. It happens.

Friday probably was one for me, though. On two separate occasions, at the end of two different half-innings, I said “the score, 9-1… Niners on top.” It was a reflex, since we’re almost always ahead. I don’t know that anyone outside the press box even noticed, but I felt like a dolt. haha
But yeah, back to the current topic at hand. Baseball teams, even the best ones, are expected to lose games, sometimes even to teams that aren’t as good. Last year at one point, the #1 team in the polls (Arizona State, maybe?) went 1-4 in a week, and the next week they were still #1. It’s not like football or basketball - there are just too many variables.
Some of u r dolts about sports. Ever see mlb teams lose to a college teams? Happens every spring traing. Why? As TF said a hot pitcher vs cold bats happens. Even moreso is how hit balls get placed. Baseball is the only sprt I know where a fail can be good (jamshot hit) and a great at bat is a fail (line drive out). That’s why u play series and not a sgl game. 99% of the time whoever takes the 2/3 is the superior team.
I am sure if I played Tiger in golf I could birdie a par 3 and him par it once in 25 holes. But he could beat me by 25 strokes. Same thing…

QFT. I was explaining this to a co-worker just yesterday, saying it’s incredibly stupid to bet on a single baseball game, for these very reasons. In baseball, there are wayyyy to many variables that can throw the game out of whack in an instant. This is one reason why a baseball season is 162 games long.

Is this why a “March Madness”-type tournament would never work in baseball? Thoughts?

Sorry Man, I heard ONE of them. When we heard it, I knew nothing was going the Niners way. Neat little giveaway on Friday, but nothing else went the way of the goodguys.
We lost again today. Fordham took the series, but I believe we would win 5 out of 9. We have the better team.
We won the league last year, and we lost one to Fordham 10-0.
Also last year....... We kicked USC's butt last year (something like 18-3?) in regular season, but they retaliated in the NCAA. Also, we pratically had chapel hill beat one week, only to turn around and get our butts kicked by them the following week.

64 teams also go to the NCAA Baseball Tournament. The main difference is that the tournament starts as a double elimination tournament, and it's more of a FINAL 8 that makes it to the CWS instead of a FINAL 4. I think that format works much better for baseball.
if we lost to a team like this in basketball, you guys would be going crazy. i know baseball is a different sport but bottom line is this isnt major league baseball, you dont play 162 games where you drop an occasional game to a crappy team. good teams beat teams like this.
from watching us so far this year, it seems we have REAL trouble fielding the ball at times. especially in crucial situations.
For example, today in the top of the 8th (i’m pretty sure) they had a runner on first and 1 out. their batter hit one to our second basemen, (is it shane brown? freshman? probably explains some of it) and he hesitated like he was going to try for 2. Elected against the toss to second but by the time he made the decision to get the out at first, the runner was already safe and we got no one out.
The next batter, sam pierce got us a K that would have ended the inning if we had even retired 1 of those 2 in the previous play. But instead, they scored 3 runs with 2 outs and basically killed any chance we had for a comeback. instead of being back 2 runs, we were down like 4 or 5.
i watch baseball, and i know these things happen. but it seems like we misplay a lot of grounders, misjudge a lot of fly balls in the outfield, and i dont think i’ve seen us turn but a couple double plays all year…it feels like we arent turning them like we were last year.
the team that played fordham this weekend will not win the A10. i know we are gonna turn it around, though! :49ers:
