Niners baseball back on track

With yesterday’s loss we are 5-15 over our last 20 games. Really frustrating to watch our guys struggle against a program that doesn’t even have a home stadium.

Josh Maciejewski throws a one hitter for the Niners today in a 6-0 victory over 4th place Marshall. This game was a welcome relief, given some of the losses we have suffered recently.

We had lots of actions today when a Marshall player tried shoving a 49er player TWICE during 2 different plays. Our players handled themselves as well as could be expected, but at the same time, did not back down. Some of the Marshall fans were jerks and one of them was even wearing a tarhole cap. I thought 4everNiner was going to go over and knock the crap out of one of them. I wish all of our fans could be as well behaved as me.

Edit: Just to set the record straight, it was me holding him back. Good thing, too, or she’d have kicked his ass.

All joking aside, I have always thought highly of Marshall fans until today. I’m assuming the handful of their fans today are the exception rather than the rule.

Were they Marshall fans or baseball parents? Big difference. Every weekend a new set of them roll into town, each just as irrational as the last.

Their catcher did not approve of Netzer’s home run trot and was running his mouth as Netzer crossed the plate, which started the problem. Later tried to take out Netzer on a play at second. Just kid stuff.

Niners baseball discussion needs a new thread title.

This is where we stand in the conference with 4 weeks left (taken from the C-USA board):

1 USM (14-4) - @FAU, WKU, La Tech, @FIU
2 Rice (13-5) - Charlotte, @FIU, FAU, @La Tech
3 FAU (12-6) - USM, UTSA, @Rice, WKU
4 Marshall (10-8) - @MT, UAB, @WKU, ODU
5 La Tech (10-8) - @UTSA, MT, @USM, Rice
6 WKU (9-9) - FIU, @USM, Marshall, @FAU
7 UAB (9-9) - @ODU, @Marshall, FIU, @Charlotte
8 ODU (8-10) - UAB, @Charlotte, MT, @Marshall
9 Charlotte (7-11) - @Rice, ODU, @UTSA, UAB
10 FIU (7-11) - @WKU, Rice, @UAB, USM
11 UTSA (5-13) - La Tech, @FAU, Charlotte, @MT
12 MT (4-14) - Marshall, @La Tech, @ODU, UTSA

Top 8 make the tourney. This weekend will be tough at Rice, but we need to win our final 2 home series, and not get swept at UTSA.

We took one of the three games against conference leading, top 15 ranked Rice. We are also only 2 games out of 6th place, even though we currently sit in 10th place. The good news (maybe) is that we have already played the top 5 teams and our remaining games are against 2 teams tied for 6th (ODU and UAB) and one team with only 5 wins (UTSA). We need to finish 8th or better to make the conference tournament.

CUSA is rated the 3rd best conference in rpi standings. Not bad.

It was nice to steal one from Rice on the road. We play 2 of the teams just ahead of us that are tied for 6th, so there is definitely an opportunity to jump up in the standings. Big series this weekend at home vs ODU, who just won a series over UAB. WKU and FIU will likely take a step down with their schedule remaining. You never know what to expect with this team since the pitching has been so inconsistent, but the team somehow finds ways to beat top teams in our conference. Colton Laws will be a Pitcher of the Week candidate this week, after Josh Maciejewski won it last week.

12 MT (4-17) - @La Tech, @ODU, UTSA

There were many problems in the 2nd inning.

Other than the ugly 2nd inning, we shut them out.

I know we’re short on pitchers this weekend, but I was a little surprised to see us leave Josh in as long as we did. I thought Vogler did a great job of shutting them out for the final 7 innings. And we made a valiant offensive effort in not giving up. It hurt when we had the bases loaded with no outs and only produced on run.

as per usual with any sport, Charlotte (still adapting to CUSA talent level) loses to ODU (who entered CUSA at the exact same time) in a sport. Drops series 1-2 at home.

Currently a game out of 8th place, tied with FIU.

3 game away series at 11th place UTSA and 3 game home series against 8th place UAB (who just got swept by Marshall).

#8 UAB has FIU/Charlotte
#9 Charlotte has UTSA/UAB
#10 FIU has UAB/#2 USM

In “reverse Niner fashion”, we lost this weekend’s series but gained ground in the standings. Normally we win a series and still lose ground. We started the weekend 2 games out of a tourney spot. Now we are only 1 game out and can definitely control our own destiny.
