Niners baseball back on track

Hopefully the weather doesn’t force us to cancel any games this weekend. We better win the 1st one just in case. They wanted to play a DH today, but now are just playing 1 at 6:00.

I have no idea what is going on with our starting pitching situation, but we have only named 1 starter for the series so far. Maybe we won’t announce until they do.

Thursday (4pm-G1): LHP Josh Maciejewski (5-6, 5.88) vs. LHP Thomas Lowery (1-4, 3.02)
Thursday (7pm-G2): TBA vs. TBA
Friday (1pm): TBA vs. TBA

Too bad our rainouts couldn’t have come during the Southern Miss series.

Baseball America weekend preview:

Conference Tournament Bubble: The top eight teams make it to the C-USA tournament, which will be hosted by Southern Miss. The top six in the current standings have already clinched spots, with only Florida International and Charlotte still on the bubble. Ninth place Western Kentucky has a tough task this weekend with a road trip to Florida Atlantic, but the series to watch in this race will be UAB at Charlotte. The Blazers are a meager 3-19 on the road, and they’d have to sweep the 49ers to pass them, but they do control their destiny. FIU has to deal with first-place Southern Miss, but it needs only one win to assure itself of a place in the tournament as it holds the tiebreakers against both WKU and UAB.

UGH - box score says we blew it in the 9th inning to lose in true Niner fashion. What happened?
UGH - box score says we blew it in the 9th inning to lose in true Niner fashion. What happened?
Ump blew a third strike call with one out and no one on. Kid gets a garbage blooper hit on his 4th strike. Solid double and a ground out plates one run and a bunt single plates the losing run.

The definition of a crushing defeat.

Great pitching and defense for eight innings wasted.

FAU won in extra innings against WKU so Charlotte only has to win 1 against UAB and will clinch.

With Charlotte and WKU loss, ODU clinched despite losing. WKU is eliminated.

FIU clinched in a win as well.

So there is one final spot with us in the driver’s seat.
Charlotte wins 1, in.
UAB wins 2, in.

If one game gets canceled it comes down to the remaining game.

If all games get canceled and WKU wins 2, it gets interesting. Finish would be:
Team W L pct
Charlotte 11 16 .407
WKU 12 18 .400
UAB 11 17 .393

When it comes to standings, is 12 wins better than 11 if the percentage is worse?

We would only have a half game lead over UAB and they would own the “head-to-head tiebreaker” against us.

Also… If we only get one additional game in and lose that game, we have shot ourselves in the foot again and will stay at home. Since one win is all we need, it is in our best interest to play both games if possible.

Latest Update:

Due to early morning rain, today’s baseball game vs. UAB is officially in a RAIN DELAY. Both teams will still attempt to get the game in tonight if a window of weather allows. Everything will be re-evaluated at 3:00 p.m. when the next update will occur.

Now playing a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am.

So if they miss the tournament can we say Niner baseball has officially “derailed”? #firehibbs2016

UAB’s site says this:

If both games are played, UAB must win both games to claim the final spot in the Conference USA Baseball Championships. In the event only one game is played, the winning team will advance to the tournament.

Yep. If only one game is played and they win, they will lead us by a half game in the standings.

That should be correct. A UAB win would mean 12-17 (UAB) vs. 11-17 (us).

Niners are headed to conference tournament after a 6-4 win over UAB in the 2nd game today.

We get #1 seed FAU on Wednesday. The good news is, that we took the series from them this year at FAU. Then we get the winner/loser of Rice and LaTech. We won games against both on the road this season, but lost the series.

That isn’t a criticism of our team, but a recognition of the level of competition we are going to be up against. IF we can develop our pitching next season, we are going to be a force to be reckoned with.
