Survivor, I didn’t listen to the post game - could you elaborate on the above quote? What was he saying about the A10 and the negativity? Negativity from what, the players or the fans? And why call the A10 a one bid league? They could definitely get 2-3 teams in (maybe more) this year. I don’t see how the A10 has any relevance to the way we played last night.
Here’s an unofficial transcript I just typed up. I tried to get it as accurate as possible, stutters and all. I’ll put my own comments in brackets.
[I tried to capture the tone in the interview. Try to imagine a 16 year old trying to soberly explain to his father how he just wrecked the family car and that’s the tone of voice Bobby had in the start of the interview.]
Matt: “Welcome back to Honolulu, the Niners losing here today, Houston winning it 68-46 - This is the Pepsi postgame show - we are now joined by head coach Bobby Lutz to get his postgame comments and…Head Coach, you had a few moments to go back and talk to the team, but, let’s get your thoughts on what happened here tonight.”
Bobby: “Well, we’re just really struggling to score the ball…uh…y’know, in the first half we had great looks…for the most part, and couldn’t make shots and y’know they played aggressively defensively but we still…had some really good looks - wide open looks - and didn’t make them and…y’know we fought hard enough, we held them to 30-couple in the first half there and they’re a high scoring team and we felt like if we could get the game in the 60s that was good for us! …but, obviously (inaudible) we needed to be in the 60s or 70s as well, just… Y’know, I’ve never been in a place I am right now. I’ve never had a team quite like this, that, that struggles like we’re struggling. So, uhm, we just got to fight through it and uhm, Houston was good today, but they weren’t THAT good tonight, I mean, y’know if we had made a few shots and stayed close…y’know they were struggling but, then, y’know they get a lead, they, they, they’re a good front running team, I mean, when they get the lead, (inaudible) y’know they’re REALLY good. You gotta stay close to 'em, you look at their results with other games and, y’know, they did win at Rhode Island but if you stay close, y’know, y’know, they, they (inaudible) give you chances, they throw the ball away a little bit and give you some chances but we just weren’t good enough to take advantage of it - they we’re clearly the better team…and…as I’ve said, I just, y’know, I uh, uh, I’m searching for answers and (inaudible) it doesn’t matter where we go, (inaudible) right now, we, we just can’t make shots very well, and uh, y’know, a-and then, uh, we were much better at staying with the offense continuing to get good shots instead of the one-on-one play that had plagued us in some other games…uh…but, but still we just… I mean (inaudible) to start the second half we get De’Angelo wide open. Twice. I mean that’s our best player…arguably. And, uh, wide open and (inaudible) he MISSES 'EM! and (inaudible) certainly he’s trying and he and Lee go 2 for 10, EJ goes 4 for 11 … again, EJ had a lot of great looks as well, so… Y’know (inaudible) De’Angelo’s credit, Antwon, those guys competed. Y’know, 10 rebounds, and…uh… For 30-couple minutes we fought as hard as we could fight and we just wore down and When we subbed, (inaudible) we just weren’t good enough, to be honest (inaudible). We couldn’t… But I wanted to rest some of our guys at least a little bit, uh, y’know 'cause (inaudible) gonna play again tomorrow a-a-and again and, y’know, it became kind of obvious that we weren’t gonna win down the stretch, so, y’know at that point I want to give some other guys an opportunity. Uh, to see how they would respond and…uh, but also t-to rest our guys to, y’know, w-we need to figure out a way to win a basketball game right now. This is a team that’s really struggling and, uh, in search of a victory.”

[Obviously, Matt must have left during this time to use the restroom, or realized that no one was listening to the radio at this point, since no one interrupted Lutz during his inane ramblings.]
Matt: “Y’know before the game we had a scare where (inaudible) De’Angelo’s back really tightened up and you got it stretched out and, uh, he really did battle - he played the entire game - but, now you gotta hope that tonight, y’know getting some rest but (inaudible) become worse coming (inaudible) back to play tomorrow.”
Bobby: “Yeah. Yeah, y’know, who knows? And, again, we have Charles and Jamison who can’t play right now. Uhh, you know, th-th-that hurts as well, because, y’know Ian will try to play the three, Uhm, y’know Phaler, just, I mean he makes, he just finally makes a shot and he’s very capable of making those shots, but he really struggles defensively … a-and especially at the three, I mean, that’s usually a really good player. Uh, so not having Dewhurst a-and Jamison available and if De’Anglelo’s out…I mean, we’ll, i-it’ll be a world of trouble, and it could be! I mean, uh, y’know, hopefully he’ll be okay but his back, it bothered him and I’m sure it effected him and again that’s why - 10 rebounds, y’know 34 minutes and despite the bad shooting, y’know he really competed for us.”
[Clearly, Bobby has been hitting the bottle in the locker room. He’s drunk, right? I’m expecting Matt to tell Bobby to go home and get a good night’s sleep, but instead he gives the coach one more opportunity to blurt out stupid shit. I really hope Bobby will listen to the tape and realize that he sounded like a complete dumbass.]
Matt: “And it’s gonna be frustrated because they did do things well at times here, tonight. There’s just no answer to putting the ball in the basket, is there?”
Bobby: “No. I mean, you got, I mean this is Division I - y-you shoot 23% overall, 16 from the, from (chuckles) the, from y’know from the uh, three! The first half it was 19 and 19. Y’know, I mean every, y’know, it’s just… Again, I have NEVER, NEVER been here before, but y’know, a-as long as our guys will keep their heads up and keep working, y’know, this point, we’re like most teams in America and that is we’re in a, for us, we’re in a one bid league. Y’know, we’ve got to win the A-10 Tournament to be in postseason (inaudible) how can you even MENTION it now and, but y’know we’re not, we’re gonna gear everything toward ‘Getting better each day’, ‘Tryin’ to win tomorrow’, ‘Tryin’ to win the next day’, and then ‘Every practice getting better’, ‘We’ll win when we get back’. You know, and try to figure out a way t-t-to get through this, make some shots, we’re certainly capable of it. Uh, to win some conference games a-and get in- You know, right now to get INTO the conference tournament (chuckles) so that we can have a chance to play at the end of the year and hopefully we’ll get healthy enough to have more depth, uhm, y’know especially at the three position, and y’know w-we’ll see what we’re made out of. It’s easy when things are going well, another test o-of our characters(sic), y’know do we keep fighting hard? You know, I know our fans are disappointed, I’m in, y’know, I’m, I’m hugely disappointed but, I don’t know if they saw the game on tv or not but, I mean the first half and even 30-couple minutes we fought like crazy. I mean, uh, y’know it wasn’t lack of effort, I mean, y’know, if you want to boo somebody, BOO ME. But it’s not our gu-, it’s not that our guys aren’t trying, they’re trying! We’re just not good enough right now and maybe we’re not good enough this year. You know, sometimes that happens. We recruited 'em and maybe we’re just not quite good enough. But I know we’re better than we are right now and as long as they give me great effort. Uh, and the guys off the bench with one exception really came in and TRIED hard, great energy, uh, y’know we’re gonna continue to play those guys and, a-a-and try to stay as positive as we can because y’know they’ve got enough people being negative and critical of 'em and y’know we just got to, y’know we’ll see what we’re made of and we just got to fight, fight our way through, day-by-day”

[Believe it or not, there’s more to the interview, but you get this idea. Wow - what a train wreck. Who is the “one exception” that Bobby mentioned? My money is on Jerrell Lewis - he drove to the basket at the end of the game and surely that must have pissed Bobby off]
