Observer talks to Iti in exclusive interview

Iti weighs in

Interesting indeed. Thanks!

Good writeup today and the big, front page photo is nice. Odd that Iti is coming in lighter than last year. I realize that they want him to be quicker on his feet so we can get up/down the court, but personally, I’d like to see him be able to hold his own in the paint instead of getting pushed around so much. Will be interesting to see how his improved quickness will benefit both him and our team.

Key quote:

"I guess a lot of people were worried about the speculation. I didn't have a clue about it. I guess when you're in the public eye, people are going to speculate. But I was always coming back."

I agree.

I think it had to do with his training during the off season. My understanding is he didn’t spend much time in the weight room and was working more on his jump shot than his post moves.

I know he’s here now and I am very glad he is…but c’mon…Don’t tell me “I was always coming back.”

Lack of contact, JC reporters reporting an actual signing, his history of instability. Where there’s smoke there IS fire. I’m sure someone convinced him that coming back was his best option but this quote & story is a farce.

Glad you’re back big fella but don’t insult our intelligence. You almost made a huge mistake…just admit it and move on…and this time, make some headlines on the actual court, during the actual season.

Nice to see some Niner pub in the paper, though I would have preferred a piece on our schedule. I agree with K-Town - the Iti piece is pure spin!

Did you expect Iti to say, "I'm an idiot, and coming back to this wonderful place was really my only option. Thankfully, the wonderful fans and coaching staff have found it in their heart to forgive me"?

I expected him to say “the only reason I agreed to return is the band has agreed to start playing the Alma mater at each home game.”

I think I actually know less after reading that piece.
Now that’s journalism.

That’s too easy. I’ll just keep my mouth shut.

What is your problem man? If they don’t include any Niner pieces you’re pissed. If they do, you mock the coverage. You are the type of person who makes Tom Sorensen refer to us as the Forty Whiners. Thanks PI. What do you do, by the way, so Mike can take a few “below the belt shots” at your profession in return?

What is my problem? Well, other than you I really don’t have one.

You see, I don’t complain about our lack of observer coverage. I stopped caring about that years ago. I really don’t care if they cover us or not and my stance is that, in this day and age, local sports sections are as obsolete as local news sports segments.
I do mock the paper because I think it is a joke from cover to cover. Trust me when I tell you that Sorenson is not referring to fans like me when he rips our program. I don’t care enough about the observer to whine about our coverage.

Furthermore, I am not taking any “below the belt” shots at Mike’s profession. His profession seems like a perfectly fine one to me, however I do take shots at him because of the way he conducts himself on the message boards. Just my opinion cowboy, which I am entitled to.

My previous post was just pointing out that the Iti piece didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know and took about zero journalistic ability to put together. Talk about slow-pitch writing… and all this after Mike came on the board the day before, patting himself on the back, acting like he had some big scoop… like Notre Dame heading to the ACC  Just typical, thats all.

Bobblin, I’m gonna have to have a word with my boy M9H because he told me that you were ok. I’m not getting that.

For one, if you knew anything about journalism, you would know that the Iti piece was a feature, not a news story. When it came out is not really relevant, but to me it was kind of timely as school is just back in and Iti is enrolled and attending.

Before this story, noone had heard a thing from Iti other than he was coming back. As fans we were all entitled to an explanation and got that from him. Whether we totally believe him or not, at least it’s something.

As a journalist myself, let me say that thinking that story took no journalistic ability is far from truth. To me it was a good interview in which I believe the right questions were asked. That’s really all you can ask. What would you have asked or written differently?

You may not like the paper or the writers, and like you said, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but Mike comes on here and tells us when something happens and when something gets printed about us. That’s cool of him. But everytime he does, he gets bashed from somewhere. He’s a normal person and will defend himself.

The story about Iti appears lame to you PI because you read these boards. Sure, to all of us who’ve been talking about this all summer, there’s not much, if anything, new there. But at least we’re hearing it from Iti and, personally, it reinforces my biggest complaints with the guy. I don’t think he has any respect for our program and is basically using us for personal gain. That’s just how I interpret a response like “I was coming back the whole time” or whatever.

As for the Observer, I’m not even a subscriber. But I do know that it’s the best we’ve got for local coverage. I don’t think the story was an example of lame journalism, mostly because it provided information for the fan that doesn’t follow Niner athletics on a message board. Further, there was no real reason, in my opinion, to crucify the guy in an interview like this. What point would that serve?

Absolutely right, bobblin. I follow the boards quite a bit, but until Iti himself (or any other player for that matter) joins the board, the Observer is the only place we will get a player’s take on things. Mike does what anyone else does. This board isn’t his job and he doesn’t have to let anyone know what he has found out or what he thinks. I see it all as a courtesy, not some self gratification. If you went out to some random site and found a story about how Iti bites his fingernails, I guarantee you would come back and post that here for everyone to see and read, just because it is Niner related.

I’m still unsure of what else could have been asked of Iti to make the story better. What “tougher” questions are out there to ask?

Lets see, a self proclaimed “journalist” who joined the board yesterday and only has 2 posts both defending Persinger and the observer. Hmmm.

I read and appreciated the article. The Observer does a good job. Most of the talk on this board was dissing Iti from people who didn’t know anything about the situation. Mr P comes to this board and adds to it. We have several people who claim to be great fans and in the know who don’t do much of anything that doesn’t involve making a dollar for themselves.
Had Iti paid any attention to the way some of our posters were talking about him, his decision to return may have beed differant.
