I did, just out of curiosity. I haven’t watched the last two seasons, I’m waiting til it’s finished and the set is out on Bluray so I can marathon through it all. Was kinda funny the “previously on GoT”… he died, and he died, and they died, and she died… The flashback scene was pretty cool. I’m not particularly invested in the show right now, so I was only half-watching it while surfing the net and chuckling at greenman rants.
It was OK, I didn’t expect much because so far the GoT season premiers haven’t been mind blowing. They did give us only 45 minutes though, which is disappointing since they have done several episodes that are <50 minutes before. Glad to see Lancel and Kevin’s apparently being part of the story again.
It’s getting confusing to me because of all the stuff they are leaving out or changing. Not going to debate the merits of doing it, but it seems odd to be in such a rush/push to get to the endgame. I guess I shouldn’t be complaining about HBO’s Benioff & Weiss not milking it, like, say, AMC has done with Walking Dead.
It’s just hard to follow when my memory has all these contradicting events.
They had one of the Breaking Bad directors do last night’s episode. There were some good moments, but the pacing suffered, and he committed the sin of leaving the episode 6 mins short. That is 10% of a rabid, cracked out fanbase’s weekly fix. I’m surprised he hasn’t been burned in effigy for it.
My favorite part of the episode was the back and forth between Varys and Tyrion, setting up their plotlines for likely the rest of the season. He handled that well, and the actors nailed it, as usual. The dialogue was great. “There are faster ways to kill yourself…” “Not if you’re a coward.”, and then “well I never said you were perfect.”
I’m going to talk about a sort of spoilery tease next, so I’ll white text it. Mouse over only if you don’t mind spoilers:
SPOILERS
Do you think the show will follow the book plotline RE: Mance & Melissandre? If so, you know what last night’s burning at the stake meant… I think they tipped their hand with some of the crowd shots during his execution, but I’m not sure, especially after what Mance said when he walked up to the pyre.
end spoilers

Yeah, the Varys and Tyrion scene was great.
I liked it. I really dug getting to move around and see more of the stories happening than normal, Sansa, Jamie and Cersei, Stannis, Mance and Jon Snow, Tyrion, Daneyrus(sp?), Brienne all had some time. Only story lines we missed was Dorn, Arya, Bran and Theon and from what I understand Bran won’t me in this season at all. Also like that we are getting to see interactions we have been waiting for - Tyrion heading for Daneyrus, Sansa going somewhere, Stannis and Jon - good stuff.[/quote]
I thought it was pretty good as well. I didn’t even have HBO until Saturday. I did my annual ,“Call cable company and complain so they’ll give me HBO free for a couple months” right before GOT starts again. Works every year. lol.
So to all you book readers. According to sources I have heard the show will pass the books this season and start spoiling the books.
How does that make you feel?
Any chance you stop watching the show until the final books come out?

I feel OK with it since the TV show has gone a bit off track from the books already. GRRM is slow as hell writing so there’s nothing to be done for that.
-
No.
It’s been common knowledge for a couple of years Gassman.
The only part that worries me is thier handling of the grand finale - whatever that is. How closely will they work with GRRM to ensure it’s of sufficient quality? They aren’t obligated to, and he is getting pissy now that the reality of them moving on from him is coming to pass - hence the invidual chapter leaks of book 6.
Also, how detailed are the notes on the remaining source material? They’ve relied on GRRM to spin out some crazy twists and plot points. If the notes are really only at a very high level, then the series will feel flat unless they are able to fill in plot details along the way with similar style craziness and unexpected twists.

+2. It took him five and six years respectively to complete the last two books. I’m sure HBO would love him to have the books completed first, but that’s just not in the cards.

GRRM actually uses some 1970’s DOS writing program to write SoIaF. Has to be manually translated by someone into Word. WTH, just do it in Word?

Yeah I heard on an interview with his assistant that he writes on an old workstation that has not network connectivity. He also works in the house across the street from his home.
I guess you get to do whatever the hell you want when you reach his level.
He seems like someone who can get a bit grumpy. Would be pretty wild if he gets pissed off and deviates the books from the show in purpose.
Not to be morbid, but I hope GRRM doesn’t pull a Robert Jordan… he’s not getting any younger.
Some 70s??? Lol. He uses WordPerfect - final version thats probably like 7.1, on an air gapped machine for security reasons. It’s probably mid to late 90s. Damn kids.

There were some pretty significant deviations from the books in tonight’s episode. This season has started a little slow, but it’ll be interesting to see where they take some of these plot-lines. Here’s a link to some of them, http://www.vox.com/2015/4/26/8500793/game-of-thrones-episode-3-adaptation. I’m really curious where they’re going with #1.
** Book spoilers are in that link **
Nice link chidave.
I really, really need to re-read ADoD. Finding my recollection of events is way off.
I’m less bummed about some of the storylines they have cut and more worried that they are already moving towards the end game, and they’ve oversimplified things. They do seem to be in quite a hurry from a pacing standpoint. Here’s hoping they have the next two seasons fully mapped out and there is some meat on those bones.
They did do a solid job of including some details to give Volantis some character. I do wish there was a little more exposition on Valyria, the Doom, and even the Free Cities history. Even grayscale, which got an offhand mention from Tyrion last night when he and Varys were watching the Red Priestess. It doesn’t apparently matter to the endgame, so they’re not going to bother.
It’s so weird that the entire Riverrun area storyline is gone, but I suspect that the Blackfish will resurface. I’ve heard some decent theories about how and when.
With no Lady Stoneheart storyline I’m not sure they’ll bother with “Jamie cleaning up the Riverlands”. However, they still can do some of it including Riverrun with Blackfish. Edmure and some Freys already cast. Jamie might need that storyline for next season after all.
Guess I need to pour one out for Selmy.
Totally enjoyed last night’s episode. The Sandsnakes look capable. Interesting their goal is to start a war where Jamie wants to avoid it. Funny how Bronn and Jamie kept up the niece thing even though both knew it not to be true. The Faith Militant sure got miltant quickly. Cersci will probably regret arming them. Poor Papa Tyrell I don’t think he will make it back to Kings Landing. Mama Tyrell will be fun to see back after the Queen gets her ear. The King is a wuss. Loved Littlefinger talking to Sansa. Rhaegar figured promminently in the episode. You know nothing Jon Snow sure seemed to spook him some. Good stuff.

See that “you dumbass” look he gave her when she said Rhaegar kidnapped and raped Leanna?
Yeah, they are tipping R+L=J a little too hard.
I have been saying for a while that Sansa and Arya are both undergoing apprenticeships. The show is selling it well.
Do we think that both combatants in the final scene are dead? I think BS is, and that he is the character that GRRM talked about the show killing off prematurely.
