Officiating - Withers/Gray foul outs

Since I started two of these for other games…

The announcers were stunned by the 4th and 5th on Curt. Fowler in the Observer said the 5th on Withers and 5th on Gray were two of the worst he’s seen this year. The replay showed that Gray hooked Goldwire with his right arm to get away from the press. I thought Curt jumped into the defender but it was definitely a flop. The 4th on him was a ridiculous call.

The difference! Curt had 12 and 14 at the time and Charlotte was taking control. Gray had more Turnovers (6) than points (4).

But 15 fouls on our 3 big men vs 0 for Eric Williams is BULLSHIT!

5th foul on Curtis was changed from blocking to breathing on a player.

I would say that it was one of the worst calls I’ve seen, but I have been watching A-10 refs for the past 2 months so I am used to it now

we win this game going away despite our piss poor performance in first half, blown layups, leemire missing FT’s, lack of a PG, lack of execution, FG%, interesting offensive plays out of timeouts, etc…if not for officials. we win despite all our problems because wake had just as many problems, just not their front court fouling out.

Wake played just as poorly as us, had more turnovers, gray was horrible…the difference was the officials fouling our front court and best player out on bs, while Eric Williams got off scott free. it may sound like a crybaby excuse but in this paticular game it was the difference, the refs can control the game as much as the players/coaches.

what an ugly game in all 3 facets, charlotte, wake forest, refs…

Wow Lefty, you aren’t usually one to talk about bad officiating, so it must truly be bad. This truly was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen. If a team shooting less than 30% has a legitimate shot at winning a game, it is gonna be ugly. Fortunately for us, this game does nothing for our tourney hopes, we were never going to get an at-large bid anyways. Where it hurts is public perception. All most people see is the box score.

That’s exactly the same thing I said during the game yesterday.

The group of Wake fans in front of me turned around and told me I knew nothing about basketball. I asked them what made them experts and they aswered they know all about basketball because they are in the acc.

eric williams fouled out every game his first two years.

I dont like how Fowler tries to make the bad calls seem ā€˜relative’ and offsetting, Gray clearly fouled, you can’t hook a guy right in front of official. fowler is either stupid or didn’t see the play on TV, or more likely trying to make acc fans reading feel better about it.

the commentary should’ve focused on Withers/Nance/Coleman’s 15 fouls vs. Eric WIllams 0 fouls.

as said earlier, this was either the best performance ever for williams and he really didn’t foul any and at same time our ENTIRE front court were too aggressive and really did foul too much… or there was an officiating injustice.

I was told today at church by several people who watched on TV that is was one of the poorest officiated games they’d ever seen. But the ball wasn’t going in the basket and that’s the important part.

As bad as the calls on Withers were and the lack of calls on EW, we still had a chance. If Leemire hits his freethrows, we make our layups, we win.

I was proud of the effort we gave at the end of the game.

That is the exact same statement I made yesterday.

The Wake fans sitting in front of me turned around and stated I most know nothing about basketball. When I asked what made them experts, they responded they know all about basketball because they are in the acc. Geeeezzzz…

yes, the officiating was bad, but the problem was just not making our shots in the 1st half. Our guys played with a lot of effort, especially our front line.

It is too bad, but probably this is one of our worse losses in 5 to 10 years for the program. We lose to bad Wake/local team as we are trying to make a run towards post season.

Geeeezzzz..............

Charlotte shot 20-71 or 28.2% (5-24 from 3 point land)…Wake: 38.8%
Wake shot the ball 49 times compared to our 71
Wake missed 10 free throws and we missed 5
Charlotte had 7 fewer rebounds…

…Charlotte lost by 3…

…and it’s the refs’ fault (see above quote)

Withers was really starting to take over the game right before the officials decided to take him out of it on two horrible calls. With him on the bench, we lost our best rebounder and our best offensive threat. Since our 3s weren’t going in the game might as well have been over when he ā€œfouled out.ā€

What was with the intentional foul on Coleman? It was a hard foul but he clearly went after the ball.

What about the Wake player traveling with 45 second to go when we were only down by 1? That was pretty obvious and an easy call to make.

There aren’t many times when you can blame the outcome of a game on officiating, but this is one of them. Despite our poor performance, we would have won the game had it been officiated fairly.

thats why i truely believe that when you have two different teams from different conferences playing you get the best refs from another conference opposed to yours.

Yea it is BS that our front court players fouled out while EW never got a foul. But, honestly we never made an attempt to work the ball in. EW isn’t going to get any fouls on the perimeter. The worst call of the game was the flagrant foul on coleman. That seemed to be a foul like shaq used to get for just being a lot bigger than the person he fouled. And i had a bad angle on the courtney williams foul on trent strickland on the free throw tip in. Could someone explain that foul to me or was it just a lack of courtney not boxing out.

Duke Edsell and Larry Rose are 2 good officials (usually). Third official Bernard Clinton was the one doing all the tooting late in the game.

yea but they were still horrible all together. I don’t care how good they normally are. My dad hates basketball and he said the refs sucked for both sides.

Officiating thread on the Wake board

how about why do you put Curt back in there with 7 mins left?
how about why do you put Curt back in there with 7 mins left?
my theory on lutz rationale:

a) felt like taking gamble, withers was starting to really get it done, no other offensive threats and we needed the rebounding…put best player on court.

b) thought since foul #4 was bs and he let officials know it, they’d let anything remotely iffy go to make up for it concerning Withers…wrong!

c) combination of those two

its easy to second guess it in hindsight, had he not fouled out it wouldn’t be a discussion except we’d say something like ā€œthat was a ballsy moveā€. since fouls #4 and 5 were bs and on best player on court, the focus should remain on refs.

as its been said, this is truly a case were you can blame the officiating for once and it not just be a partisian gripe/excuse. you can say the line about, ā€œno, we lost it on our own with poor shooting, ft’s, blown layups…and quit complaing about refs b/c its an excuseā€ā€¦BUT, wake sucked just as bad, had they got screwed by refs you could turn it around to wake and say, ā€œno it wasn’t the refs, you turned the ball over too much and deserved to lose, gray played horrible, etc…quit whining about the refs.ā€ā€¦both teams were equally bad, but the officiating slanted one way more than other.

we didn’t go inside enough on Williams, but he was continually over the back and hacking us on shots down low, especially in first half.
