Many thought we would be playing Coach Marshall and Wichita State. However, Monmouth, who has not won a game this year, beat Coach Marshall 59-50. Game with Monmouth Hawks is 3:30 Monday!
Marshalll was skeert.
is this game going to be on TV or anything?
internet only, Gill.
I’m probably the only one who’s sort of happy about playing Monmouth. That’s my youngest sister’s Alma Mater.
It’s a private school for poor little rich kids from NJ (kinda like Duke & Davidson) and they drove her up the wall. She would go to classes for the education, but would find herself dealing with classmates who would spend most of the time babbling on with self-important, whiney soliloquies about themselves. One day she called me up and said that she got in trouble for an outburst. She stood up in class, threw all her books on the ground and started screaming, “NO ONE GIVES A **** ABOUT YOU!” and went into detail about her feelings toward everyone in the room - and then left class slamming the door. It’s actually a pretty easy visual for me.
So it’s a situation where I wouldn’t exactly mind it if we bring out the reserves early on them.
Anyway…Monmouth wasn’t very good last year, and are not predicted to be very good this year either, but they typically finish as conference or reg. season champs in a weak conference. They win with defense - so if they fall behind and are forced to score (like against Notre Dame) they get whalloped. If the game is close or if they have the lead - then they get into a defensive rhythm and become more and more dangerous as the game goes on…as Wichita State (lost yesterday) and Seton Hall (OT game) found out. Expect them to play more zone defense than man-to-man.
The key is to take them out of their kind of game and build up a nice cushion early. Otherwise, it could become an ugly Richmond-type game that we’ve lost in the past.
I’m not real excited about playing Monmouth. We will get no credit for a win and if we lose it will be a bad loss.
I got drunk there once. Unfortunately this is all the insight I can provide.

guess that means the Niners are going to have to kill Monmouth now!:49ers:
I'm not real excited about playing Monmouth. We will get no credit for a win and if we lose it will be a bad loss.I really think we can win (despite the fact that we don't do well against these kinds of schools). I'll take an easy win over a decent loss any day. I imagine monmoth will have a tough time with 3 games in 4 days.
this team needs to grow and playing a “monmoth” style will help them learn what it is to play richmond who we play twice this season as important conference games. the fan base needs a boost (including keeping up student attendance) off of what we saw at the app game, coming home 4-1 does that.
another thing, monmoth is in the same conference as Fair-Dickenson.
i got drunk there once too…a small little rich college on the jersey shore…my neighbor goes there…and some kids from my high school went there…they are a bunch of snobs…$30,000 a year…
Wow, coming out of this tournament, How important will the Wake game be ? Should be an interesting game to see where we are.

I believe this will be the first time we’ve played a zone team. Contrary to what you guys are thinking, this may be rough, unless Lee & Ian are on.
I don’t know anyone who thinks us vs Zone isn’t going to be rough.
Who has said otherwise?
I think everyone just expects us to be able to outman and outplay a team like Monmouth.

A friend of mine played football there back in the 90s.
I think they have a guard or two that can play.
So what’s the official tip time? I keep seeing 3:30pm on here and Utter’s blog but Charlotte49ers.com has it listed as 5:30pm EST.
And I wouldn’t sleep on Monmouth, or look ahead to Wake. I think that we’ll win but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a closer game than we’d like.

We’re on the exact same page. The game doesn’t have much potential for a big RPI boost - but Charlotte already has plenty of those games on their plate this season.
The next three games after Monmouth are Wake, Davidson, and Southern Illinois. You’re going to want to get players like Ngoundjo and Phaler minutes beforehand. Ngoundjo needs the experience (and the team need the depth), Phaler is well-suited vs. a zone defense, and this opponent has the defense to give fits to teams like Seton Hall and Wichita State (unlike mighty Ottawa). Lutz said Phaler is shooting well in practice - but that’s worthless if he can’t get into a game. A hot shooting hand coming off the bench vs. one of the three games mentioned could help a ton.
Also don’t forget that we’re in the middle of a tournament - starters like Leemire played 60+ minutes in back-to-back games. Charlotte has had way too many come-from-behind games to have the opportunity to expand the rotation beyond the main core. Not a lot of opportunity coming up soon, either.
I’m sure the sun and plane ride home would be much more enjoyable with a big win, anyway - that’s some nice incentive - so long as we don’t step into the trap of playing one of those old Saint Louis/Richmond-style games.
Then it’s back to work with the toughies that are coming up.
