While the team didn't do any favors, what play did we run everytime down the floor in a halfcourt set.....
Yup you guessed it,
Leemire running the baseline curling out for a 3, heās the only one moving, no one else in motion and yup you guessed it, easy for a defense to key in on.
Thatās what weāve done all year. Fortunately, it has worked all year, because Leemire has a super quick release and is capable of scoring like this. The offense has been this bad all year, even during the wins. Pretty much the only other scoring is when the Leemire curl doesnāt work then someone ad-libs, whether it be Mack shooting a silly three from 5 feet behind the 3 point line to Dewhurst or Anjuan trying to take their man 1-on-1.
Our entire offensive gameplans were nothing but trying to get Lee open, and if it didnāt work⦠have the players ad-lib. It was horrific. Great season, better than expectations, great effort by the team, amazing defensive adjustment from last year to this year, but our offense was disgustingly bad.
I guess if Lutz can make us the 2nd best defensive team in the A10 in one year, maybe he can make us the 2nd best offensive team in the A10 in one year, too.
Overall, we were much better defensively this year⦠but not last night. Nebraska could make 5 or 6 passes and have a wide open three any time they wanted it⦠time after time after time. Maric is a great passer and he knew the double teams were coming and often passed the ball right back to the outside without hesitating⦠uncontested 3. That happened all game and we never adjusted.
On offense we were just awful. After a while, you could watch the play start to develop and know exactly what is going to happen. Lee run through a couple of screens down low and try to get open in the corner⦠heās covered⦠someone attempts to take their man 1 on 1 and either turns it over or puts up a bad shot.
So, yes⦠I think we were out coached tonight. Teams with solid defense and crisp passing can really make Lutzā teams look silly, especially if we arenāt hitting 3s. This game looked way too similar to the game at Davidson last year⦠which I still cringe when I think about. Me may be more athletic, but they play smart basketball⦠we donāt.
We got out coached, out played, out hustled, etcā¦We need more talent. We need a point guard who can score. I like Bobby, but his way of doing things just aināt getting it done anymore. He might bleed green & white but what does that have to do with winning meaningful basketball games? I bleed green & white too but that doesnāt make me a great coach for this team. We bring in Phil Jones? He is big and slowā¦and we are a running, 3 pt shooting team. We havenāt had a scoring PG since Demon Brown. We keep reloading on run and gun SGs and undersized power players. We need to get back to the players like Sean Colson, Demarco Johnson, Demon Brown, Cam Stephens, Galen Youngā¦etcā¦and we need to get out of the first round of ANY kind of post season tourney for a change.
Iāll say it again, I like Bobby. I am all for loyalty and such. We have given him enough time to build a nice career here but from what I can see it looks like all we will ever be with him is a mediocre, NIT/fringe NCAA tourney team. Always squeaking by.
That was a clear example of good all-around fundamental basketball versus an offense setup primarily to get one guy 3pt looks. It was proven again that if a team can play tight defense on Lee, in most cases we will struggle to score, and look lost on the offensive end of the court. Nebraska displayed many of the things we need to change about our offensive strategy. They showed a thorough understanding of what they were trying to do, displayed CRISP passing, and had constant movement by everyone on offense.
Like many have said already though, our players were totally outplayed also. We are too soft when we take the ball to the basket. Even their smaller guys were blocking our big guyās shots. That is why we cannot finish shots in the paint. We have to develop a physical and mental toughness. It is time to go with the Tom Izzo tactics, and start practicing with football equipment on, and have the guys get as physical and aggressive as possible.
I spent most of last night saying these same things over and over. It was really depressing.
The only thing Iāll add is that Iām tired of playing a BCS school that is allowed to rough us up and get the advantage on the foul calls. Higgins was pretty brutal last night when the tone for the game was being set. We got a couple charges to make things look good, but there was far too much contact allowed by them on defense while we were whistled for everything on the other end.
Everything that ice_cold said is true, but that just exacerbates the situation.
The worst part was losing to a team with inferior talent (aside from the C), but with ridiculously better basketball IQ, discipline and execution. I donāt want to play ugly, slow ball, but cāmon. There are plenty of teams who shoot (open!) 3ās at will, and fly up and down the court at a frenetic pace. They just have better offenses with more movement and better decision making, with consistent effort on defense. Is there any chance that Bobby could develop his own brand of the Phoenix Suns offense (example: back door flex cut) like so many other teams are going to?
Last thing Iāll say is that Dewhurst seems like heās at a low point. I really hope PT isnāt the issue. Cause he has done a 180 back to where he was earlier in the year, after that month or so that he played great. We need him to be that guy again.
crisp passing can really make Lutz' teams look silly
Nebraskas passing ability was beautiful. I haven't seen a team not only "make the extra pass" but make the extra second and third pass like that in maybe ever. They were FAR more disciplined than us. It was as if each player had a "10 scale" rating system for each shot, and if it wasn't an 8 or above they passed it up.

Comparing that to all the sloppy passes we were throwing around, like night and day.
Last season was a defensive boot camp. This year needs to be a fundamentals boot camp.

Took 46 replies before NA blamed the refs- now thatās progress.

That is just plain STUPID!!! Utter has been the best thing the Observer has ever done for the 9ers. AND, additionally he has kept us connected to games that some of us outside of Charlotte would have no clue whether we won or lost until the next day. Regards, Oldniner

Iām not saying bobby is a bad coach. I am saying the strategy used by the Nebraska coach worked better and we had no strategy to counter Nebraskaās defense. i think weāll be ok next year. I do not think weāll miss Lee as much as some people think.
The best part of the offseason? Well, itās like when we are on winning streaks, I donāt have to listen to this broken record. See you guys next fall! Thanks for your predictable input!
Lee leaving will force us to make some offensive adjustments (at least in theory). I donāt see us running screens for Ian 20 times per game next year. We should have more balanced scoring. We have a lot of guys that are capable of putting up points. Mack will probably lead the way but he really needs to work on shot selection. Iād like to see Gerrity create more⦠driving and dishing, getting to the line, etc.
 The best part of the offseason? Well, it's like when we are on winning streaks, I don't have to listen to this broken record. See you guys next fall! Thanks for your predictable input!
Many of the comments on here are predictable because the offensive product we have seen on the floor has not changed. The reason we won more games this year is because our defense was DRASTICALLY IMPROVED (kudos to Bobby and the assistants for this) and our talent was better. The reason we remain inconsistent is becuase of our offense (continues to lack discipline, no overall movement, no crisp passing, plays to much for the 3 ball, and when that falls through we turn to one on one plays).
If Bobby and company can continue to keep the defensive progress going, and improve on our offensive strategy and fundamentals, and also improve on our mental and physical toughness we will see consistent winning. Then the criticism (which there will always be criticism) would not be the same old things.

For the entire game, I donāt think the officiating was that terrible or the complete reason we lost. But I do agree that early in the game the officials set the tone. We got a few good inside looks without a single whistle. That set the tone. I believe the players got frustrated and we never adjusted.
When they were struggling early I was thinking that a zone was a better option, to try to off set their effective passing.
This game was enough to get me off the fence. If Lutz gets a big contract, I think the money I have saved up for season tickets is going elsewhere.
I keep trying to put it another way, but yeah, we need a coaching change to play better basketball.
