She was given a chance to start football in the 90s and declined it. That decision has impacted every step since then.
What she inherited from Jeff was a successful basketball program. Moving into CUSA and into an on campus arena thanks to Jeff. She tried to not hire Melvin and Jeff basically forced her hand.
She was forced to start football and even then she took steps to try to stop it. Our alumni participation never grew based on enrollment numbers. Marketing was god awful, they didnât use social media at all, was reactionary with nearly every decision.
The one thing she got right was moving to just using Charlotte.
If when Woodward gave her the chance to start football in the 90s she had said yes we would be looking at a very different AD.
So while us sucking in basketball now is 100% on Mike, our current situation can certainly be traced back to Judy.
Do you know for certain Woodward wanted to add football? From what I understand, he was pretty much of a control freak who once he made a decision could not be budged from it. Not that it matters now.
Plenty of other schools were in the toilet a few years ago and bounced back. 7 or 8 years is long enough to stop blaming a past regime. Itâs actually kinda silly
Yes. Jim Woodward gave her the clearance to start it if she wanted it. Itâs not that he wanted it or did not want it, itâs that if she thought it needed to happen he wouldnât stand in the way. He told her she had to raise the money for it. That is from people in the room when he said it.
Her personal feelings on football were clear when CFI was trying to put the screws to her to address it. From her fantasy dollars line to trying to block supporters from coming to a board meeting. If she had really wanted football so bad her actions would have been neutral at the least if she was scared of Phil, but she went out of her way to try to discredit the push.
As for Judy she and Bobby had plenty run ins. He was furious she made us stat a season with an afternoon tip off (3 or4?) because girls volleyball had a game scheduled in the floor. Storming out of the office with a âIâm just trying to run a D1 basketball program hereâ line. With that said Phil certainly wasnât a fan of Bobby or his wife. And as we have seen with the tower Phil wasnât above letting his personal feelings dictate university decisions.
We should have been prioritizing WBB since our NIT finals run. MBB is sort of a lost cause because of school legacy existing and then the advent of NIL. But womenâs basketball? The precedent had not been set at that time for which schools were supposed to be powerhouses. Obviously the power conferences played better but that was solely because their MBB heritage transferred to the players.
In those NIT finals in 2011 we defeated South Carolina, now look at them. This was many years before the blowup the sport had since Caitlyn Clark, now tons of schools are throwing cash into the mix. We had a chance there for years, Cara was a wonderful coach, but more should have been done to separate us from the rest of the mid-major WBB programs.
The biggest challenge with womens basketball - especially back 15-20 years ago was there just wasnt much talent. The lack of parity and the significnat drop off talent wise from the best programs to the least is a clear sign of that.
It is leveling out somewhat, though the disparity is still massive. But thatâs why Iâm saying we should have prioritized it back then. I donât think there was real precedent on which programs were the powerhouses, now itâs very much so identified.
My point is we beat South Carolina in the NIT in 2011 and look at how different our programs are today. Itâs saddening to say the least.
That is how I feel about soccer. The sport is riding a massive wave and we have a top program in the nation. It is not a money driver yet, but I do think we have a chance to really solidify our spot there and with how college sports work changing maybe even working with Charlotte FC for players and development.
Mike Hill loves it when everyone talks about Lutz, Judy, hell, anything that keeps attention away from his egregious failures as our Athletic Director.
This should not be about hating or liking someone, or lamenting the horrible failures that preceded Mike Hill. We are still talking about Lutz because Mike Hill is and will forever be a failure here.
I cannot figure out why Mike Hill is untouchable given his record here is clearly mediocre at best and for the sports that matter most, his record is an institutional embarrassment. Or at least it should be an embarrassment if one cares enough about some palatable success here.
The shitter is full, and Halton is empty. Have a Coke and a smile
I am not being critical of Bobby, but any coach that lives with the three dies with the three. I have always thought that a more balanced offense is better. Just my take.
I have never bought into the idea that the UNC system wants to totally control us. But I agree with that person that said they want to keep a governor on us. But UNC system wants to keep all public school goodies in the triangle. One med school at chapel hill and two law schools in triangle at nc central and UNC. No goodies anywhere else was their plan all along.,
I have a good friend that has been a long time professor at ECU and he told me that the only way ECU got a med school is because a legislator forced it.
The UNC system held us back for many years but things have improved recently. And the universityâs success is a marathon not a sprint. After the city gets its first med and law schools, the next one may be easier to get. As the university and the city continue to flourish, I can see a day where maybe the UNC system thinks it may be advantageous for them to bring a med school to the university and the city. It is all about what is best for them.,
But I must say I was taken aback by the news that the UNC system went public with their displeasure in the way athletic director bubba Cunningham handled the firing of Mack Brown. For them to show this displeasure publicly regarding the firing of brown told me that they are possibly more involved in our situation than I ever dreamed.
Also, going to the univ of Ohio forum, led me to believe that Ohio state univ is more involved in controlling univ of Ohio athletics than chapel hill is with us. It sounded like Ohio st actually allocates their operating budget dollars to them. But I could be wrong about that.
Yep, an Ohio U athletics fan forum is going to be an unbiased and 100% factual information source about OSU.
Ohio State U doesnât have time to be controlling everything higher ed in the Buckeye State nor does it have a mandate or funding to do so.
Of course, that doesnât mean funds are allocated evenly among the numerous institutions that comprise the University System of Ohio nor that OSU isnât perceived and treated as the de facto flagship university.
Everybody has an opinion., and I am not criticizing someone elseâs opinion. Just like - - - holes everybody has got an opinion. I am not saying that my opinion is better than the next guyâs.
But I just donât see why people on this forum think that hill has done such a bad job. I get it that he has not gotten revenue sports to the level desired. But letâs be realistic, both programs are bad and have been since he got here. Plus, as many have stated, our available money to spend on coaches has been low. It is hard to hire for losing programs but even more difficult with little money.
But we knew that it would improve as the additional money from the AAC comes in. I would think that hiring coaches in revenue sports is more difficult with less funds available. And it is hard for every hire to be a success. Hell, schools that have plenty of revenue miss in their hires all of the time.,
But I think that hill is learning on the job. I do not think that hiring asst coaches from p4 is the formula for success. Many have stated that here and I agree. Maybe hill sees that now after the Sanchez failure.
The biff hire was risky but one that hill was willing to take. It did not work but it got the program to a level where a better coach could be brought in.
I know that we are a fan base that has sufferrrd for a long time. But the dissent of our basketball program is not Hills fault. And the early failure of the football program is not Hills fault. Everybody deserves a couple bad hires especially starting out. I have hired people and sometimes a good hire is hard to make.
The bottom line for me is that when our two revenue sports have fallen as far as ours, it takes time and maybe a couple hires to get them back on track. Rome was not built in a day.
I hate chapel hill and its sports. But if there is one thing that we can take from that program, is that Dean Smith when he was first hired was not successful and the rams club wanted him gone. But somebody made the decision to keep him and the rest is history. The grass is not always greener on the other side. And NC State basketball is a testament to that when they fired herb syndrck. They have never gotten their bb program back that level. And this is a program with a great past history.
And ECU has never recovered after firing Ruffin McNeil.
I guess that I am a guy that has a half full glass mentality. I have confidence that with time hill will get our two revenue sports competing fur conference championships. I think that we should be patient. We fire hill and the grass may not be greener on the other side.
We are all well aware of the inequities of the UNC university system. And people bitch and complain about it all of the time in this forum. And I do not blame anyone from complaining on here. But complaining on here accomplishes nothing.
I have been known to write a letter to local leadership and state leadership. If you are not happy with the system, then do something about it. A mass of people can create change. Instead of bitching on here take the time to write a letter to the new governor and copy the head of the UNC system, state legislators, plus local leadership here such as the mayor and Charlotte chamber. Do you think that 100 letters to influential people may create change. I think so. By doing nothing we are silently approving of our university not getting a fair shake. We are tax payers and have a voice.
We could start a grass roots uprising with the people reading this forum. It is easy to come on here and bitch. The question is do we feel strongly enough about the bias to do something about it?
