Refs

Yeah, I thought that was the killer. Drayton boxed out, grabbed the rebound and was mugged by 3 guys. Instead of rewarding him, they call the jump ball. 60% at the line, no key defensive stops and game over.

Withers also slapped the backboard after his swing. Clearly a technical and he knew it. His DUNK in the first half was about as awesome as Iā€™ve seen.

It looked like they were trying to foul him to stop the clock.
Originally posted by Powerbait@Dec 5 2004, 03:16 PM I remember right after the T, Leemire and BP both fired up bad 3s early in the shot clock. That's not the way to keep your team in the game. Discipline has always been a problem with Bobby.
I will say this about the T. We struggled for about 2 minutes after that T and I thought that would be the end of us and we would never be able to rebound. However, I will give us credit for putting the t behind us and rallying to take the lead back.

3 constant points that continue to be made:

 1. Terrible calls helped us lose.

 2. Poor judgement helped us lose.

 3. Poor free throw shooting helped us lose.

That says it in a nutshell.

ā€œThe officiating was horrible. Most of the bad calls went against BAMA but some also went against UNCC. It was an SEC officiating crew so I should not be surprised at how poorly the game was officiated. I donā€™t know why the best conference in the world cannot hire decent officials. They wer terrible.ā€

from bama board I agree the refs were awful but to say most calls went against bama this guy is clearly on drugs.

They were terrible on both sides, probably equally so. I counted, from sect215, 2-3 Plav reachins that blatently hit nothing but arm, Iā€™m sure they felt eddie should have been called for a D foul at the end of the 2nd overtime guarding winston (imo it was a good no-call, like the eddie drive at the end of the 3rd). and the phantom jumpball on drayton?!?! he was mangled by 3 guys at once. bad refs, possibly. Did they cost/give either team the game? nope.

the jump ball call on EJ was atrocious.

if they call this obvious call(FOUL on Bama), then we likely win. Because we were up two, 20 seconds or so to go and wouldā€™ve put Drayton on the line, instead they get the ball on the possesion arrow and score to tie and another OT, horrible.

that was the call that broke our backs, not to blame it all on officials, becouse ft shooting was horrible, but the refs should be reviewed by the ncaa, with possible suspensions(im sure it wonā€™t happen but they were borderline corrupt. Should at least be investigated, as money could be an issue. Not saying that it was but could be.

On coach Lutzā€™s techā€¦ All he said was ā€œthatā€™s terribleā€/ The explanation for the Tech was ā€œarguing a call while out of the coaches boxā€. I can only hope he was warned before hand. Otherwise a bad call.

How many times do you see that called on Gary Williams or coach K?

The biggest missed call was the EJ jump ballā€¦ bad call and that is the only call that might have cost us the game.

However, we had plenty of mistakes that did cost us the game. There is plenty of blame to go around.

It was an SEC officiating crew

NCAA basketball refs are assigned by region, not by conference.

I agree that the refs didnā€™t make or break the game. But they were bad, and if we get that call on Drayton as a foul and not a jump ball weā€™re all talking about the big win I think.

Hopefully we turn it around at Davidson.

GO 9ers! Beat the Cats!

why does the ncaa insist on the arrow, why not have a jump ball?

I've wondered that myself. It's probably the one thing I agree with Dukie V. on. Let them jump for it.

i have been a high school ref for over 10 years. the jump ball call was the worst i have ever seen. those guys get big money to make the right calls at crunch time, and he flat out blew it. imo, it was so bad one would have to question his motive. any ref with any experience at all would know it was a foul situation if they missed and to reward the fouling team with possession of the ball is unimaginable and the tape should be sent to the supervisor. the overback and one call is not far behind. bobby and curt got to be smarter than that. we had other chances but the ref most likely changed the outcome of the game with that call.

bobby has no class on the sidelines, he is a little fired up spit ball. i can see why officials wouldnā€™t like him. some officials are very arrogant and think they are bigger than the game(valentine, cloughtery, etc) but they carry the whistles.

My only problem with Lutz on the sideline is that I think he overdoes it with his bickering to the refs. Don't get me wrong, I love that Bobby is so animated and passionate. But I think it's overkill and often a liability. If I were officiating a Charlotte game, I would get sick of hearing him in my ear and I would get to a point where I just tuned him out. That would then limit my compassion for him when a controversial call was on the line. I'd be far more apt to give a call to a coach who didn't hammer me all night long than to the guy that wouldn't stop from the opening tip. After you hear that for 30+ minutes, it no longer stands out as a plea...just constant griping that will usually fall on deaf (or shattered) ears.
