Restaurants in the University area?

Post something if you go. I drove over to try it one day at lunch, and checked Yelp in my car. I went somewhere else. Looking now I find it interesting that Yelp is showing 4.5 stars based on two glowing reviews, while ignoring the other 24 mostly bad reviews. Maybe things have turned around and only the two good ones are now relevant. If you like it I will give it a shot.

The Midtown in that location was one of the longest holdouts from that chain, so it could work as a destination location. It had a decent deck outside IIRC and a small stage.

Are there that many jazz/blues fans in town?

Outside of the professors at the University I can’t imagine a ton of blues fans in the UC area.

We were going to go on Monday but it’s one of those restaurants that’s closed on Monday’s.
Yes, do post about your experience if you go. Reviews indicate that management is quite asinine, but I’d like an honest opinion.

Has any one been to Angry Ale’s by the Saucer? I have not made it there yet, but it looks pretty nice (it could use some Niner decor).

https://www.instagram.com/alesuniversity/
haven’t been to the new one, but as long as the food is the same quality as the original location, it is above average bar food. I’m really happy this opened in UCity because it gives the area a legit bar with a loyal following.

The pool room at the press box restaurant is the nicest I’ve ever been to and played on. They have pro table, they are not forgiving. Games take twice as long to finish.

Yea their food is pretty solid. I agree, the Montford location has a nice environment and I am glad it has come to the University area. With Saucer, the Press Box and now Ale’s that area is shaping up nicely.

I really wish a club would open back up in the old club spot in university place. Daisy dukes/soho east I think we’re the places there before? With the light rail streetscape improvements, there could be a decent, walkable nightlife corridor on n. Tryon street.

Just really wish UCity had more good dining options. There aren’t really any places in the $20-30 per entree range except Firewater.

I always liked Ishi. Good Japanese food at good price. Apparently they’ve moved locations since I’ve last been there. It’s over by the McDonald’s now.

360 Bistro tried to fit that market and went out of business. UCity only seems interested in restaurant chains.

I don’t expect a college area to have tons of nice options, but most college towns at least have a few higher end dining options. I’m not talking a ruths Chris or anything l, just something that isn’t your typical national chain.

It’s terrible ever since they moved. Not the same feel. I liked the small spot they were in beside peak fitness long ago. Cool atmosphere then

I imagine the majority of the faculty doesn’t live in the UCity area, which makes it harder for the $20-$30 restaurants to succeed given that the area is dominated by cheap rental apartments. One can hope that once cooler/interesting restaurants are inevitably priced out of NoDa and Plaza Midwood that they start popping up in UCity. However, I do think what hurts UCity is the strip mall development and the ownership of those strip malls is likely not local. I know University Place is (or at least was until recently) owned by a company in Columbus, Ohio. If the owners are out of touch it is likely they will always go for the chain-type store before a local place, unless they have really good local representation.

If the more interesting type of restaurants start taking space in UCity and gain a following, higher end housing should follow. Light rail is needed to even have a chance of either happening.

OK, 9 years later and reviving the thread
Have a co-worker from TX making a work trip to University area for a couple days. Asked me for restaurant suggestions and I don’t have much insight. Soliciting NN to make some suggestions. Maybe something I am not aware of within a few miles?

clt says it isn’t close to campus, but worth the drive/uber

I haven’t been but Golden Owl is probably the only place up there that could be considered elevated dining at all.

Otherwise, Indian food, Thai house, or magic sushi (decent sushi, but it’s all you can eat, not fancy sushi).

Monterrey is the only other place in Ucity I ever go to.

Not much else up there that I’m aware of that isn’t fast food.

Boardwalk Billy’s is still a pretty popular bar with decent food.
If it is a Monday night - hit Iron Thunder Saloon for the Domestic beer
and Wing special off exit 49.

There are also decent chain restaurants at University Place and at Concord Mills. None will blow you away, but several are serviceable.

At Concord Mills - Viva Chicken, Tacos 4 Life and Carolina Ale House, along with a good Jason’s Deli location. Think there’s a Fishbone and a Macs Speed Shop (BBQ) in front of the mall.

At University Place - Cava and Piada are both okay. I’ve heard City Barbecue isn’t bad but I’ve never been a fan.

Think there’s a Dave’s Hot Chicken there now too.

Another good pizza place, but it’s further away, is Due Amici - Prosperity Church road. Been there forever and seems like an authentic NY Slice shop
