Rhode Island-49ers post game articles

From my camera phone.

Quick observations:

 • AC is nice to be outdoors when the weather cooperates (a million times better than last year). Everything is crammed onto the boardwalk strip (shops & casinos) and the rest is flat, NJ ‘meadowlands’. Lots of old people.

-Beer man and I had a friendly conversation - and he asked me why Charlotte fans don’t travel well. He said our turnout was pretty poor compared to everyone else.

-The same officiating crew did the la salle / duqesne game. They did a great job calling that game.

-Anyone who thinks that URI somehow got a raw deal really needs to watch the full 2nd half from last night’s game. One ref felt the persuasions from tunnel-visioned uri coaches/fans in attendance and started to call the game to their liking. Charlotte never seemed to catch a break (but the other 2 refs were solid). As hard fought as the game was - and the baby blue Rams ('specially baron jr.) did put out a much, much better effort than the last time we faced off - the right team won. Leemire and his teammates played their tails off and it was a just a great game to watch. You could kind of feel it in the air that Charlotte was going to pull off the come-from-behind win.

-Coley’s limp disappeared once the pre-game warmups started. Ian did not miss in warmups. Dewhurst has become the new Butter Johnson. No faith in himself and it shows offensively and defensively. You would not believe that it’s the same person that had that awesome block vs. Clemson. 2 potentially costly fouls by Dew resulted in 5 free throws. Lee put an exclamation point on his career at Charlotte.

I just get tired of fans -- of any team -- griping about officiating. Win by enough points to keep the officials from playing a role. There are bad calls, both ways, over the course of every game. Just deal with it. Pet peeve, sorry if it hit too close to home for some.
Yeah, complaining about officials is tiresome, but the excuse "well, you should've won by 9457938579345 points so they couldn't have made a difference!" is one of the dumbest arguments ever. It's like saying well, if you didn't want to get hit by that car, you should have driven a helicopter.

The worst part of college basketball is the fact that officials affect the game so much. They can change the entire tempo and style of a game. I wish officials were consistent, but there are way too many for that to be possible. Heck, conference commissioners can’t even agree on interpretation of rules (e.g. A10 saying crossing the coaches line is an immediate technical, but ACC saying they should get a warning first).

Does he not know where Charlotte is? It’s probably because we’re the only fans that can’t walk to Atlantic City from campus.

Dayton, Saint Louis, and Xavier fans might think take issue with that!

From Gary Parrish…

Best game from Wednesday: The officials can't seem to stay out of the way this season, and Charlotte's victory against Rhode Island provided another example. Keith Cothran was whistled for a foul on Michael Gerrity with 0.3 seconds remaining in a tie game. Of course, Gerrity pulled a Jonathan Wallace and sank both free throws to give Charlotte a 75-73 victory in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament that left URI shocked, disappointed and (best I can tell) rightfully so.

Team whose dream remained alive Wednesday: I don’t believe Dayton is as far out of the NCAA tournament field as most other people in the business of projecting brackets, and the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament did nothing to change my mind. The Flyers edged Saint Louis 63-62 in overtime, improving their RPI to 30. They are now 21-9 overall and 9-5 against the Top 100. That’s solid. But the selection committee might be leery of a team that finished eighth in a non-BCS league, right or wrong. So it’s probable a Thursday victory against Xavier is still necessary for the Flyers to make the field.

Guys, think back this season to all the times wierd/bizarre/ridiculous calls (sometimes not even following the rules of the game) were made against charlotte this season and you complained. Now this time, you came out on the good end and another team complained about the same. Who cares. You won, get over it, move on.

Jim

In a season where 22 of 31 games have been decided by 7 points or less there will be some blown calls that go for us or against us.

In a conference like the ACC you have some great teams at the top and some bad teams at the bottom, so ACC fans will be less likely to complain about officiating as a conference because half the time people are getting blown out. (Yes there were close games between VA and UNCCH this year but there were a lot of blowouts too)

In a conference like the A10, where .3 seconds separate the 6th place team and the 11th place team. Officials will play more of a role… especially when the those officiating crews often seem clueless and inconsistent to fans.
