Hello to everyone from Houston. Iâm a 49er Alumni and I went to see them last year when they played Rice here. Attendance was very low, and considering Rice stadium is huge, it felt eerily empty.
Anyway, I was looking forward to some redemption this year, but spent most of my time screaming at my iPhone while I watched the live stream. My family thought Iâd lost my mind.
As far as attendance at Charlotte goes, I agree that you have to give a reason for people to show up. Yesterday was not that. Itâs not like the away games are on ESPN. Our coaching is not good, but there has to be some player accountability. Itâs on the players when they drop passes, or when they fumble the ball after not signaling fair catch. Watching our defense was maddening, but Rice only had 16 points well into the 4th quarter. If the offense was doing anything in the second half it wouldnât be an issue.
If this program wants to progress, they have to start by winning an FBS level game at home. They have one more shot this year, hopefully it wonât be squandered.
I really wanted to head over to San Antonio after Thanksgiving to watch them play UTSA, but Iâll be out of town. My next shot is when they play Rice here again next year. Thatâs a long time to wait
Lambert needs to go. Against Rice, they were completely stagnant from the 2nd quarter on. Lambert clearly does not understand clock management or end of game situations. His defense is the worst in college football. He is either unable or unwilling to make adjustments mid-game.
The bend but donât defense can work (Iâm not a fan) but the offense at a minimum has to pick up first downs. They were not able to, and the D was gassed when it counted.
We had a chance to end it on the first drive of the second half, the drop that would have been a TD followed by the jet sweep fumble that knocked us out of FG range kept them on life support. The fumbled punt (if we are coaching them not fair catch that needs to change immediately) put it back into a life and death struggle. Our injuries on the OL combined with the below average game from our WRs caused us to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
This one hurts because a victory would have moved our bowl chances from possible to probable. Weâre not done yet, (Marshall crushed MTSU this week) but itâs going to be difficult to get both these last two. This year will be a success regardless, but may not be the great leap forward it could have been.
A word about the crowd, announced attendance was over 14k and it was thick at the end of the first. The people didnât stick around though, and thatâs puzzling to me. I donât know if a more raucous crowd could have helped stem the tide in the second half, but it wouldnât have hurt. Someone asked me before the game whether our fan base was savvy enough yet to know how big this game was, unfortunately we as fans have some maturing to do as well. Iâm not pointing any fingers or calling anyone out, and to a degree itâs understandable due to the youth of our program, but I wish we had been better.
That being said, thereâs still a lot to say for next week. I would love to give MTSU some payback for last year, and make the UTSA game for all the marbles.
The FIU loss is squarely on the piss poor clock management by the coaching staffâŚperiod.
This game was lost because we refused to take away the one way Rice used to move the ballâŚthe screen and underneath patternsâŚthatâs coaching too.
Could we have won both games DESPITE the bad coachingâŚyes. But the coaching is supposed to HELP you win by strategically game planning and adjusting and managing the clock. Our coaches seriously dropped the ball in both games.

Our defense didnât get any stops down the stretch vs FIU, coaching wasnât the problem. They scored two touchdowns in 7 mins because our players didnât make plays. We also had a missed extra point and a missed FG. With the Rice game we were content letting them use the screen and it wasnât killing us. Also our DBs have to play 8 yards off because they lack speed. Our players have choked games away not coaches.

LOL⌠We have a football coach on this forum fellas!!! You must be a coach or member of our AD if you canât see how incompetent this coaching staff is.
p.s. If you are a coach, please leave this program. Thx!

Lambert & co. arenât the ones blocking, tackling, covering, throwing, catching, and kicking.
What would you have done differently coaching wise Mr. Expert???

Niner Nurse I am sure you are an upset fan and I get that. I also appreciate what I assume you do as a profession. That is truly noble work. I am sure our coaches are more upset than we are with that loss. If they are not then I will agree with your comment. As maddening as some of these home losses have been our football program as a whole is moving in a good direction. We have certainly made some mistakes but are moving in a good direction. Now for the AD that is a different story.

No one said the coaching staff wasnât upset at the loss, but as Niner Nurse said, it appears they are incompetent. How else do you explain the extremely strange play calling and the lack of adjustments on defense. It is the coaching staffâs job to call plays to put the players in position to be successful. It is on the players to execute. I donât believe the players were setup for success this game.
Crowd was piss poor - considering the importance of the game I was very disappointed in the crowd. The AD did an awful job of promoting, but that is nothing new.
Our depth is a huge issue still. We still have kids that came to play with us before we had anything, so I canât get too upset. Those are the breaks as a 4th year program.
With all that said there is no excuse not to try something different. Force them to beat us another way. Change up the D. At least mix it up some. On offense - the injuries and the drops killed us. The play calling though - man I donât get it. I think our staff out smarts itself sometimes. Next to last possession we throw 3 straight times and run 8 seconds off the clock while nursing a lead. Final drive when we HAVE to move the ball, we run it two straight times. I do 100% think that the staff was upset with the fair catches and that is why he tried to field a kick and got crushed.
All in all the season is still a success. We have had some big wins. Some unexpected wins. We have plenty to clean up. Season could have been amazing. Instead it will just be a forward step.
Our AD though? Not having the stadium full is 100% on them.
He also didnât fair catch later in the game and should have been crushed. The whole section around me was wondering why he didnât fair catch. If the coaches really donât like the fair catch they are nuts.
For those that say this isnât on the coaches, you canât use the bend but donât break strategy on the last defensive possession even if you think thatâs the way to go the rest of the game. And I agree, the two runs straight up the middle on the last drive were nuts.
Correct me if I am wrong but coach said it post game we maybe should have fair caught that but when you punt return you got to expect to get hit. Pathetic.
Agree⌠Down 3 starting offensive linemen really showed how âbeing oldâ helps. We just donât have the experienced depth to be down that many players at one position.

Again, look at who is playing⌠3 offensive line starters are out⌠We were doing ok with 2 out but loosing a 3rd midway through the 1st half exposed our depth⌠Thatâs not coaching.

I agree with the above. Sweariad has said, while calling a game earlier in the season, the coaches have âa philosophy of not calling fair catchesâ, thatâs just plain asinine. I completely believe Nate Mullens got chewed out at halftime for calling fair catches and was told not to call any in the 2nd half.
Thatâs true, but his words were âprobably should have maybeâ called a fair catch, seemed rather dismissive of the idea to me. The way he mentioned the âthatâs what you sign up forâ thing has planted the seed of a conspiracy theory in my head: Duke is no longer returning punts because he refused to go along with the âno fair catchâ philosophy. Thatâs just my theory however.
This âno fair catchâ thing is starting to become like a âbubble screenâ thing for me; itâs not a HUGE issue in the big picture, but the fact that weâre doing it is infuriating to me, and Iâd like to see it gone.
Have we ran back a punt for a touchdown this year? Weâve fumbled at least two punt returns this year by not fair catching (ODU & Rice). The one on Saturday cost us the game and basically bowl eligiblity. Outside of the S.Miss game our special teams have been a disaster for four years running. That is coaching. For men that have been around the games for decades in paid coaching roles they act clueless when it comes to certain aspects of the game.

The piss poor crowd has me almost wondering if football will survive here. Even the folks that were there, were not even engaged in the game. The whole atmosphere was terrible IMO.
I just remembered something that I thought about, while I was at the Rice game. If/when we ever expand, it will force more people to be in their seats during the game. There are SO many people that hang in the concourses and railings to watch the game. Sometimes I donât like the design of a sunken bowl stadium like ours (Knights stadium is similar concept). It allows people to view the game anywhere in the stadium, without being in their seats. Which has itâs pros and consâŚbut as far as having butts in seats, itâs bad imo. Just a thought.
