Rivalries

We need a rival! One thing that is huge for school spirit is having someone to hate and unite against. Any way we can try and strike a rivalry or two up? I know football plays a huge part in rivalries and we should definitly look into who has rivalries and where they are as a school cause it could certainly help make our “we want football” point. Show a direct corrolation between football, rivalries, and how a school is doing.

But even still, we need a rival. It would be so fun and help our school out a lot. I really would love to pick a fight with USC. They arnt that great in the SEC in any sport, so they arn’t too busy with them or too good for us, and their bball seems to be doing as good as us now. They are in the biggest city in SC, and we in the biggest in NC. They are a straight shot down 77 so getting to each others school for the game would be a sinch. Plus, SC owes us. Both the Panthers and the Hurricanes are in NC yet we let them tag along and just went with “Carolina.”

We could sure help each other’s RPIs. Maybe get a home and home. We can give the game a name and get a trophy and do that whole thing and get some hate going.

We also need to try and strike up a little beef with some of our new A-10 buddies. I never thought I would miss CUSA this much!

EDIT! I had a good idea. We can call the rivalry with USC some cool name having something to do with precious materials i.e. Garnet and Gold. Garnet is a precious stone right? Call the trophy Queen Carolina’s Treasure or something.

The problem with this logic the only way we formed a rival game between us and cincy because they just happened to always be ranked when they played us. Then their players end up throwing a basketball into our stands hitting one of our fans. Stuff like that starts rivals. Davidson, as of right now, is our only rival.

You’re right about us needing a rivalry, but one cannot just decide, “they are our rivals.” Rivalries have to grow on their own and not because of administrative efforts.

Exactly. All the great rivals have always came from nothing. For instance maryland vs. duke in the past few years. They have come to the point where they absolutely hate each other. They used to not be rivals at all.

Well, I’m really starting to hate St. Bonaventure. Those Bonnies really get under my skin…

Always fun to punk Davidson. Would be nice if the other NC teams would play us on a regular basis. GW is a revenge game. IU fans will boo us off the court this year in Bloomington. They’re still pissed by Plavich’s bomb. I can see the top teams of the A-10 (UMASS, GW, Xavier) becoming rivals. Nothing like the Cinci days, though.

GW and Xavier are my leading nemesai. Next on my list is richmond

I said this last year… I wouldnt be surprised if there is some sort of rivalry that brews out of that game last year. Or atleast some ruff feelings toward each other.

We should play Winthrop…

seriously…

oh ya lots of bad blood there.

clt declares that our new rival is…unc

yes the university of north colorado, the true unc.

But do you not think we could pick a fight with USC? I mean I do agree that rivalries grow on their own, but several of them are somewhat predetermined. Georgia and GT is not the same as Maryland and Dook. UGA and GT were destined and probably a little bit planned to be that way at some point. Having a foil is great for development. Both teams make each other better. Probably a big reason the 3 NC colleges most popular in sports are within a few miles of each other. Geographical location helps a lot and has to be considered.

So if it were possible to pick a fight, USC would be the best school to do it with I think. Does anyone think it would be possible to pick a fight with anyone at all or is that just to wishful?

A rival is developed by either location or tough yearly matchups. The only location style rival we have is Davidson. We do not play any of the ACC schools on a regular basis so that knocks them out. The yearly matchup is ussually with a conference foe that develops into a hard battle almost every time where both sides can claim a decent amount of wins. Being new to the A10 there is no program here that we have that level of competition with. Aslong as we continue to change conferences every 10-15 years we will not develop the long term hated rival that so many other schools have. Yet another reason to get a football team and find a conference that we can call home for 50 years

I think it is just wishful thinking. USC ran away after we blasted them in Halton with Rodney White and Co. That game was awesome… 3s raining in from everywhere.

As fans we can start up what ever we want, but it is up to the AD to sign these clubs and establish the games as a yearly matchup. As we know is seems as if it is difficult for us to get decent programs to schedule us straight up home and away. Then to be able to get a established program to bite on a yearly matchup is even harder. Also I think it is difficult to develop a rival outside of the conference. The home and away games every season go a long way in establishing that hatred.

Look to what we have now too. GW and Wake Forest. If we blow them away and get our revenge… that might be the beggining of some bad blood. You never know.

Darn. Our program is in a hard place. We are good enough to beat all these teams, but all these teams don’t think we are good enough to beat them so when we do, they never agree to play us again or if they do, it is on rediculous terms. Its almost like if we were a worse program, say… NCSU:biggrin:, we would get to play all these good teams and have rivals. Either we start sucking or get some damn respect so that people will play us and be okay with losing.

I don't want to be in a rivalry with WF. If we are, it means we have to play at Wake a lot and I don't ever want to have to go back there. It is an F-ing weird place.

Most people would argue its because they know we can beat them and dont want to get embarresed.

I think NC state would be a great rivalry; We are always bashing them, and I personally hate them. (not too far away either). Plus we are similer institutions, uh… sort of. And I have to think that they are a team we can consistantly beat.

Charlotte vs Raleigh could be a nice rivalry. We were working on a series with the Wolfpack last year where they agreed to come to Halton. I have no idea where it stands now that Herbie is gone.
