When I read the headline of the Charlotte Observer's April 1 editorial – “Can UNCC have it all in a recession?” – I thought it had been mistakenly placed on the opinion page instead of the April Fool's page.
A simple phone call to UNC Charlotte would have avoided the misstatement that we are attempting to raise $45 million for football. We have adjusted the fundraising goal to $20 million by scaling back the football operations facility to a pre-engineered structure and by scratching the proposed new full-scale football stadium in favor of modifications to the existing Belk Track and Field Stadium to accommodate football.
excellent rebuttal - especially with Schulken canned
Most disturbing is the false choice raised by the final line of your piece: “Losing academic scholarships and raising money for UNC Charlotte football? Not compatible.” Ridiculous.
Donors have different interests, and some who support academic scholarships might not donate one dime to athletics. Others support athletics, but not scholarships. Some support both. This is not an “either/or” question. The Observer does the university, its students, and the community a disservice to present it that way.
wait- so now you are FOR stories that rip the Observer?
Because I disagreed with one of your posts you think that I’m a faithful Observer defender. I admit, sometimes people on here take it too far, but I also realize how unfair and biased articles about our University or athletic programs are in the O.
I always want what is best for the University and I applaud Shaw’s letter.
