People in Charlotte Metro Area & NC are BCS biased. If we have a Charlotte team in the BCS, then those who ignore us as fans, paper, TV, & radio will suddenly like us. It’s just like the Dems & Reps get all the attention over Libertarians & Greens. If you’re not in the top tier, no one gives a sh*t, but once you are top tier, it’s just like the Mafia, you’re a made man. Charlotte 49ers in non-BCS vs. Charlotte 49ers in BCS are 2 different things.

That was entertaining.
Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think SCK is all over it. You can’t compare our attendance figures or tv ratings in CUSA to possible attendance figures/ratings in a BCS conference.

All I will say about this is the USF guy in the feasibility meetings said there were two BCS conferences watching what we were doing very closely. Obviously one would be the Big East. The other? Would have to be ACC or SEC. And we all know that there is no way the ACC would invite us unless the conference was about to fall apart. Not saying we will go to the SEC, but that is what the man said.

You’re forgetting another BCS conference that may be in need of some new members relatively soon.

I am 99% certain he said FBS or major or large something of that sort.
Who is the USF guy?
I think he was former AD at USF when they started football. He spoke to the football feasibility comittee way back when.
USF guy is their former AD, Paul Griffin. That NCAABBS thread shows me why I hate other schools’ fans even before I meet them. We don’t have a snowballs chance of landing in a BCS conference but I’d love to watch the message board meltdowns if we did.
All depends on how things shake down. If the Big East gets raided or hell even the ACC gets raided and they have to find members to survive i think we are on a list. If conferences start moving to super conferences and the big east tries to be one of them I think we have a shot.
Is a BCS league a long shot - yeah it is. Is it totally out of the question? I don’t think so. We just don’t know what is happening out of the public eye.

I’ve tried to talk myself into this, I just don’t see it. I can’t even fathom all of the pieces that would have to fall in place to join Big East in the next decade. I don’t even know about CUSA at this point(even though a lot of our fan base is treating that like a lock).
I really hope I’m wrong. We obviously have some great things in our favor (market, large enrollment, growing fan base). Is that going to be enough to make a conference overlook all of the things going against us?
Take UTSA for example. They are always brought up as an example of how we can jump straight into CUSA. They have all of the positives we do, plus they have an FBS ready stadium. Even with all that, they were not being courted by CUSA or MWC or even the Sunbelt. They seemed headed for the Southland Conference, and then the timing just happened to work out perfectly for the WAC (a gutted, desperate, 5 team WAC that had to expand quickly or go under). Hopefully we get lucky and a similar situation comes up, but that is the only way I could imagine being FBS in the next 5-7 years.

They have a terrible athletic history. We at least have had solid basketball teams with solid attendance (and we’d sell out every conference game with just a decent season against Big East opponents), and good baseball, soccer, golf…
It’s a hell of a long shot of course, but we have some positives over UTSA. Even though our stadium is not FBS ready, we’re not going to move to a conference immediately after being accepted anyway. We’d have 1-2 years to expand the facility. Build one side one season to take us to 25,000ish and the other side the next year that takes us to 40,000. Our stadium isn’t the problem. Our problem is that we’ve never played a down of football period. That might be good enough to get you into the WAC, but I doubt it will be good enough to get us into a BCS conference. You simply don’t go from FCS to BCS (unless you’ve Villanova, but they’re a special case since they’re a basketball member in a BCS conference).
We’re not just going from FCS to BCS, we’re coming from nothing to a BCS conference in the time frame referenced in this thread. No team has done that in that short of an amount of time we are talking about. It took USF 8 years to get to the Big East, and they did not play as a full member of CUSA until their 7th season. My hopes are as big as anyone’s, but we would be doing something no other startup football program has done if we are playing in a BCS conference in our 5th season of existence.
I agree that FCS to BCS in anything around 5 years would be amazing and a long shot. The main difference with this point in time is the amount of conference shifting that is happening. The same dynamics that have allowed UTSA to jump early and even USF to land in the big east are happening now. Does that mean it works for us? Maybe or maybe not - but it isn’t like we are bringing football during a time of peace there is change happening and it could work to our advantage either with going FCS to FBS in a hurry or if the stars align right even a higher step. If there was no alignment happening then our stay in FCS would be awhile for sure and IMO we would have already accepted all sports in the CAA.
Charlotte is that 6’ 10" kid with no post moves. We are a project, but you can’t teach major media market, top airport, and 35,000 students. Somebody will look at us and decide our upside is worth a shot. It may not be a BCS conference, but it will be better than our football record would indicate.

Hmm very interesting. In that scenario (Pac 16, SEC 16, Big 12 dead leaving 5 homeless teams) you would have to imagine that ACC/Big 10/Big East would try to get to 16 as well. There would be poaching among conferences, but even assuming that all 5 homeless Big 12 teams get in one of the BCS conferences, you are looking at 13 (!) new spots for current non-BCS teams (7 Big East, 4 ACC, 4 Big Ten, 3 SEC minus the 5 Big 12.)
Carrying it a step further, you could imagine most of those new spots being in ACC/Big East (SEC would probably poach ACC and Big 10 would probably take a few of the homeless Big 12 teams). Something like that could be great for us. I still think the BCS would be a huge long shot, but at least there would be more spots open. At the very least that would probably lead to some open spots in CUSA.
So many what if scenarios. That is just one of many. There are lots of ways a Pac 16 and SEC 16 could work out great for us, as well as ways that it could be a disaster.
