agreed, you have to score 14 ppg, but you have to look at what he’s playing against and how teams play against him.
i was at the game with a buddy of mine last night, and actually met shawn’s mom last night. very nice lady, wore a “UNC Charlotte Mom shirt,” that was pretty cool (even though i’m up for a name change like the rest of this board). she told us at the start he hurt his ankle the night before, and he was limping a bit, but it really didn’t hold him back.
end of the first quarter, score was like 24-2, northside. shawn took like two shots, but he was distributing. they ran a box and 1 on him the entire first half. he would drive and dish, and his teammates weren’t making any plays. northside knew he was good and were talking trash to him the entire game. anyway, he had at least two guys on him the entire first half, and i think ended with 7 or 8 pts. he was looking for his teammates because he couldnt get an open look. HE IS THE TEAM.
2nd half, they doubled him every now and then, but northside was up by enough that they didn’t have to play a box and 1. shawn played hard, even though he was down 30. he was more aggressive getting to the hole, and seemed to have his way. it helped they didn’t put the whole team on him. he hit a nice 3, then crossed a couple guys and went to the line to shoot 3 after they fouled him. he played real hard on d, he had between 3 and 5 blocks on defense and had a couple steals. kid kept fighting. i liked to see him keep working his tail off even though the game didn’t matter anymore. he made 4 straight ft’s in the first half, then went like 4/8 from the line in the 2nd half. 8/12 isn’t great, but it’s on par, if not better then what our team is doing this year.
i really hated that northside broke out with a huge lead to start the game. there weren’t any “clutch” situations for shawn, if you know what i mean. no big moments for him to show his talent. his team kept missing shots and turning the ball over… i think he only had 2 or 3 turnovers, which isn’t too bad indicating the score. but as far as him scoring a bunch, don’t expect it. he’s not playing with an oak hill or other private school where they have a bunch of other d-1 prospects. shawn is their only standout player. he started the game doing the jump ball, played on the baseline in their 2-3 zone, and brought the ball up the court. played the 1, 3, and 5 within the first 30 seconds of the game. kids going to get all the attention from teams and will continue to get a box-1 or doubled all game, every game.
hope this outline put things in perspective for you guys. yet again, this wasn’t a great game for me to gauge much. hoping to see him play again before next year.
Thanks for the update lkn49er. I’d be interested to hear your observations if you see him play again. I agree that much depends on how good the rest of the team is if you are going to look at statistics (e.g. assist totals go down if your teammates can’t hit shots, point totals go up if your teammates allow you to get some space). The competition level also matters, it sounds like Dinkins has a very good defensive team at Northside.

At one point there was some talk of the Niners recruiting West Charlotte PG Mark Blackmon. Looks like he made the all conference 2nd team. Not sure if there is still any interest though.
