Shooting At VT
have they said if he was an engineering student yet? Since it looks like he had bought fully into the class warfare crap I wonder if he was targeting the ‘future rich kids’ or something in Engineering?
Wow, so you mean that crap about a great job field my high school councelors gave me may be true? Yay!

The one thing to remember about this is that hindsight is 20/20. There are a lot of wouldas, shouldas and couldas, but what happened, happened… FWIW, my prayers certainly go out for the families and friends affected by this act of senslessness.

There were many signs that this guy was not in the right state of mind.

Here is a link to a play he wrote for class http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive...071vtech1.html That’s the only piece that is on the internet currently, but apparently he had other writings that were graphic. If I was a teacher reading this guys work, I would be bringing him with me to the counselors office to get help.

Note listed gunman’s grievances
Professor Carolyn Rude, chairwoman of the university’s English department, said she did not personally know the gunman. But she said she spoke with Lucinda Roy, the department’s director of creative writing, who had Cho in one of her classes and described him as “troubled.”
“There was some concern about him,” Rude told The Associated Press. “Sometimes, in creative writing, people reveal things and you never know if it’s creative or if they’re describing things, if they’re imagining things or just how real it might be. But we’re all alert to not ignore things ike this.”
She said Cho was referred to the counseling service, but she said she did not know when or what the outcome was. Rude refused to release any of his writings or his grades, citing privacy laws.
NBC News’ Pete Williams reported that police had found a note in which Cho listed “random grievances,” but few other details were immediately available. That seemed in keeping for a young man who apparently left little impression in the Virginia Tech community

Dude, read the post above yours. She sent him to councelling. Hind sight is 20/20.

I sort of disagree. Think if a Quentin Tarantino like story was written in a class, it would be way worse than that. The one thing I noticed though it wasn’t very good, just plain mad at the world.

Yeah, that’s it. He was targeting future “rich kids.” You’ve been wrong about every other thing you’ve posted in this thread to date. Leave your politics at the door for this thread. This is about a kid who went nuts, not about gun control or class warfare.

As for notifying someone about a student’s work, it’s not so simple. Creative writing could lead in to some macabre subject matter. If we applied modern standards to Poe, for instance, he would have been in counseling by 5th grade and had the creativity beat out of him. As for the university, professors are limited by a 1974 piece of legislation called FERPA (acronym) that limits what and to whom information can be divulged.

read this three times now and still have NO clue what you are talking about.

he wasn’t targeting future rich kids. this post reminds me a lot of what i do. straight typing out your ass.

Did you actually READ the plays (they are on CNN if you haven’t). There is no Poe comparison here. The guy was disturbed. And according to the Washington Post, he was accused of setting fire to a dorm and stalking women and bought two weapons exactly 30 days apart (according to Va law). There were signs. People just ignored them, which is commonplace. I actually have more concern with having a shooting on your campus and deciding to notify everyone by email 2 hours later.

If you want to feel uplifted just a slight bit in this tragic time get onto cnn.com and watch the English prof/poet close out the gathering today at Va Tech. Makes you smile and tear up at the same time. Really an amazing speech and she ends it by leading a “Let’s Go Hokies” cheer.

Made me realize once again the bonding nature of sports in our society. We may disagree vehemently about issues on this board or the issues may bring us closer, but either way sports and the passions about them bring us together and develop bonds. At times like this, it is these bonds with others that carry us through and I hope will help Va Tech find a way to recover.

Sorry Daxified. I was referring to a post on page 3 of the thread where someone asked:

“have they said if he was an engineering student yet? Since it looks like he had bought fully into the class warfare crap I wonder if he was targeting the ‘future rich kids’ or something in Engineering?”

A note believed to have been written by Cho was found in his dorm room that railed against "rich kids," "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on campus.

He was not a Engineering major so why did he attack the Engineering building is the question…the building on complete otherside of campus from his dorm no less. And a building I would presume he had no ties to being an English major…your right about one thing though, media reporting on this has been bad but that is something pretty common.

something i heard yesterday is that the girl he first killed was his gf and she was apparently hanging out with another guy. He didn’t know what class the guy had, but new he was an engineer. From the list of names he probably realized he was a civil engineer. With facebook and myspace your whole life is an open book, the boyfriend possibly had his schedule on facebook ( i don’t know this just speculating)

I don’t know what i think about the lady fist pumping and all, and i don’t know how i feel about the “lets go hokies” chant other than it was moving and it was good that all those people felt a common ground aside from they all lost friends and/or family. However, I loved the quote by the lady “We are better than we think and not quite what we wont to be…”

There’s very little chance this kid had a girlfriend, or ANY friend for that matter. There have been unconfirmed rumors about him stalking people, but nothing concrete. If he knew this girl, it was more like that he thought she was his girlfriend. Who knows, either way he was a really troubled individual with many, many problems.

The poem by the last speaker was very moving…and the unity amongst the student body is incredible to see.

Aside from being disturbing, the writing in those plays is just awful. Sounds like a middle school or early high school student… not a college senior English major.

"Austin Cloyd, age unknown, was a freshman majoring in international studies and French.

Cloyd, born in Charlotte, N.C., lived in central Illinois with her family for several years before moving to Blacksburg. She graduated from Blacksburg High School. "

already a wikipedia section about this. pretty detailed.

shooter also died with the words “Ismail Ax” on his arm written in red ink. anyone know what that is referring to?

Bomb threat at Burress Hall right now. Not a lot of details but building is surrounded by law enforcement.

Hopefully, it’s just an empty threat but regardless, it takes a sicko to even prank like that under the current circumstances.
