Shouldn't we be rallying around our players?!?!

Originally posted by CharlotteAlum@Mar 12 2005, 08:39 AM I was personally on Beale St when several of the players walked out of one dance club with some little gold digger groupie girls and headed to another dance club. This was shortly before I called it a night at 2 am (central). So firsthand, it happened. And a few of them definitely were not of an upset mentality.
This happened the night before our game or after we lost that night?

Oh great, then allow me to join in and rallying behind ā€œour playersā€. Sounds like from charlottealum’s posts, that the team had another agenda while getting ready for a game the next day. Hey Lutz, you ever heard of bed check?! Glad somebody actually witnessed this junk. However, people like Lefty would rather close their eyes when this stuff comes out and RALLY! Hey Lutz, rally this!

No sorry, didn't fully read the guys post - not enough sleep and too much alcohol for the past few days to make my brain function limited.

The players were out the NIGHT OF the game, not the night before.

Same thing applies. In my opinion, a team who got routed by the home team need not be out partying like they won the damn game. Bobby has no control over this team. The last thing I would have my players doing, is go out in Memphis partying after having been taken apart by Memphis.

Well, good to know they weren’t as upset about losing three straight games as many of their fans were.

Exactly my point. No other coach in America would’ve tolerated this. Bobby has allowed this for years. I remember when we had the miserable 13-16 season, after every game the guys were either going to Gators, going clubbing, going partying. It was the same old story. It was sickening. They’d mope in the locker room for 30 minutes, then party it off. This team is immature to the 10th degree and it starts with a head coach who has never had control off the court.

I agree with you on this one, kind of. I do think Lutz has control of them...but that sounds like way too much freedom in downtown Memphis.

they’re only 18-22 year olds. i’d party too if i was in Memphis away from home. bring on the ribs and beer.

His control is questionable if they were allowed to go out and party after such a damaging loss. I'm hard pressed to believe that most coaches, in our situation (great regular season run, followed by 3 straight losses which killed our seeding and an unenthused performance, sans Curtis) would have allowed their team to go out and party. I would have had them in their motel rooms so they'd have plenty of time to think.

I find it inexcusable but I’m sure several here will find justification.

I can see the players partying as a good thing. I mean, they had nothing to gain by sitting in their hotel rooms sulking. One strategy is to go out, have some fun, gel as players and friends, try to put the last 3 games behind them and look forward to the next game. Maybe they were just trying to bury those aweful memories behind them and getting ready to come out pumped and confident for the next game.

They should have partied and blown off steam after the debacle in South Florida, not after a one-and-done in the tournament. Postseason = focusing on the task at hand and not some "gold diggers" at a night club into the early AM hours.

People are obviously going to view this situation differently from others. But for me, I think what happened is telling and not really in a positive way. Let’s hope all their partying is now out of their system since we have a pretty important game coming up next week.

You only get to be 18-22 year olds once, they should get a chance to enjoy life

I’m gonna try & pretend that I didn’t see the comments about the busride home & some of the players staying behind. If that is true, that is as dumb as anything that has every happened in the Lutz era.

Since the players seems to think the Memphis ribs & beer are so good, maybe I should take my basketball initiative money & some of my '05-'06 season ticket money to find out.

Getting permission is irrelevant. The fact is that after the loss, they were out partying and apparently no one was beating themselves up over the game. If you (not you Lefty, just anyone in general) think it was a good thing for them to do this, then that's your perogative. But considering what has happened to this team over the last two weeks, going out clubbing would be the last thing I would want to do if I were a player. And it's the last thing I would allow if I were the head coach.

Considering these are kids going out on probably their one free night during spring break, I think they should get a free pass on this one.

I’m sick of some on this board being negative. I like our coach, our players and our program. I remember the days when we’d be excited to be in the position we are in. Go 9er’s!!!

Free pass, my ass. These kids get a free ride, nothing wrong with making them a little more responsible than the average college student.

These kids have a GIFT that I would give my right & left testicle to have. I don’t care how long they play, someday the cheering will stop. Instead of some players going out, some players staying in their rooms, some players going to the meeting room, THE TEAM should be focused on proving a #18 ranking is not a fluke.

I’m actually more pissed off that the team appears to have gone multiple directions than the fact any of them went out socializing.

Let me clearly state that I am glad you are not the coach.

Fine, don’t waste time looking for me when the ā€œWe’re just happy to be in the tournamentā€ crowd gets together. If just making the tournament is this team’s goal, the fans & players that are motivated by that are UNDERACHIEVERS.

Is this team a bunch of underachievers… I hope not. But their recent play and the reports of their post game actions in Memphis seem to imply otherwise.

I would love nothing better than to be proven wrong, but til then I’m just calling them as I see 'em.
