Alumni Golf Tournament was the smallest crowd I have ever seen .
I left a few minutes early - but I never heard anyone speak( coach, AD?) as in the past
It basically seemed like a basic get together with friends for golf.
My Son brings home a Stephan Curry trading card from school.
I take my kids to Scarowinds where my son wins a basketball and has to pick from
UNC, South Carolina, Duke or Clemson.
Midnight Madness is this week and I have heard very little Hype about it this year.

my goal was to stay off the board until basketball season started, but this is ridiculous so i have to post.
bigtime, there have been more patrons at the other sporting events than there have been in a long time. there have been student sections at men’s and women’s soccer games, chanting, cheering, singing, and making a ruckus all year. its been like 104 at soccer games. the lines to get priority points after the volleyball and soccer games have been, at times, 250+ students long. men’s soccer is averaging over 1000 in attendance. the campus is buzzing about midnight madness and the turn out will be awesome. the roof is going to come off.
the fact that stephanie has a trading card shouldnt surprise you: flavor of the month. if you expected anything other than ACC or SEC schools at carowinds, you’re kidding yourself.
i cant vouch for anything about the alumni golf tourney.
but, rest assured, this season is going to be amazing. lots of niner gear on campus. return of 49er fire. its going to be amazing. get hype.:49ers:

$500 a pop is affordable for few to play golf. I know it’s for charity, but it’s about 12.5 times what a normal round costs.
Kids are bandwagon fans, for the most part.
Nothing unusual there. We deal with that everywhere.
Everybody on here knows about it and knows what takes place. What’s left to hype about it? Are you disappointed that the basketball team won’t be doing a stupid dance routine like Davidson?

If the Alumni crowds are dwindling for golf because of $500.00 then 45 million is going to be a b*tch.
I get something every other week from Davidson and now the younger generation is getting Davidson trading cards. I guess our marketing department is still in a wait and see approach.
Why do you accept that?
If I did not come to this board I would not know anything about MM and it is 2 days from the event. Sad.

Hope so. It is sorely needed.
Not trying to second guess or question you directly.
I do, however, look forward to seeing some “fire”. The excitement needs to start within the Athletic Department — to the Students and Alums ------to the rest of the Season Ticket Holders ------------and to the community at large.
this “fire” should not be dependent on a certain number of wins or a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.

I am playing in a tourney next week at Northstone. It includes lunch, dinner, beer, golf shirt and other assorted handouts. It costs $150.00 pp. Played in 2 others since September ( both at Irish Creek) and paid $100.00 at each. Both included lunch and dinner…but only one provided beer.
I read in another thread that this $500 event is not promoted because the Spring event is a bigger tourney. Doesn’t make any sense to me…from a price perspective or from the actual organizational perspective. Cut the price in half and actually do some advertising. They could actually raise more money.

Apples and oranges. I like to play golf, but I’m not spending $500 to do so. More people will give to watch Niner football for years to come than will pay $500 to play golf once. As Joe6Pack said, I think the ones who play usually play in the spring. Congrats if you can afford both.

They have to get people to their games somehow. Do you live in that area? I would expect them to send out stuff to people in the neighborhood. They need Wal-Mart fans, too. I am guessing they will up their advertising this year to take advantage of marketing Curry while he is still there.

I have seen the event via email announcement, the 49er Club Annual Report mailing, and in the UNC Charlotte magazine. The latter is something that every alumnus gets provided that they have kept their address up to date. As for local advertising, I don’t know because I live over an hour away. When I was at Charlotte (before this board existed), I always saw it via flyers around campus. If you were a student and did not know about you either were not paying attention or did not care. As for now, I don’t know if they still put up the flyers or not.

I said that in my other post. There’s no hype on here because most everyone knows about it and is familiar with the event. It’s not new to them. That doesn’t mean it’s not something to look forward to or not exciting, but it’s something most have been to before.
Seriously, guys come on. The hype is huge on campus. I have never seen so many students excited about this year and sports in general. As far as community advertising goes, I see 4 “Witness The Power” Billboards everyday on my commute from home to school to work. Trust me the word is getting out. As far as the merchandise goes, that is how it has always been but I have seen Concord Mills vendors selling Charlotte gear here lately.

Hype on campus is great… but only half the battle- you need hype off camus as well (and off this board), this is where we fail every year.
The $500 is for a team of 4 players…$125/person. That includes a small breakfast, round of golf, snack cart (including beer), lunch, and a gift for everyone to go home with. All of that, plus the tournament is raising money to help students with scholarships at UNC Charlotte.
The Chancellor did speak after the lunch along with Chip Rossi. He talked about getting support for Football and purchasing seat licenses.
The crowd was smaller than previous years, as have the other events that the alumni office has put on recently…probably due to the economy with retirement savings accounts being wiped out and gas that was $4/gallon.
I thought the $500 was an incorrect price for the alumni golf. $500 is the cost for the 49er Club outing.
X-49er, the UNC Charlotte magazine is no longer sent to everyone, just contributors. Many who need to see it won’t unless they go to the trouble of searching through the UNCC.edu website. I’ve complained about that several times before but that is a not a function of the Alumni Office. :unhappy:

I received the magazine today but from reading it I feel I should have received it two months ago. Several dated articles announcing events that have already taken place.

I rec’d mine like 2 weeks ago.
Part of the problem is what rate these are mailed at.
Nonprofit Org. bulk rate is saves money for the organization paying the postage, but is one of the slowest forms of delivering mail.
I’ve seen where delivery can take up to 30 days with some forms of postage.
I will try to find the details on it.
It was kind of funny/silly with the story headline “Decision of Football May Come in September”
Two years ago during my freshman year I didn’t hear anything about the basketball teams. Last year you could def tell there was a huge leap in basketball popularity coming into the season. I’m sure it will be more popular this year as well considering it seems like theres a million more students on campus this year. There is a sign for the event on the bell tower and i’ve recieved an e-mail about it also.
