NNN is the single most important factor to football at our school
Every member of the CFI deserves a spot in the Niner HOF. I am still in awe of that group and what they did.
Well, I helped start the rugby program at Charlotte and it wasn’t done remotely. I did it on the field. How’s that for self-importance?
Can we get a list of posters who are mature vs immature? I think it would help me determine how I should react to posts and keep up with who is and is not in the fraternity.

I will state this clearly.
My problem is that some people on this board are terribly self-important when it comes to this board and their contribution to Charlotte sports.
Which is why Al Gore created it!

Frankly it’s my problem. I’m from another generation.
I find young people on this board actually believe they are not just fans but very important people. It is not possible for them to just be a fan. They must somehow merge with the social media to give them an identity. This comes across as self-importance.

How does people using social media make them appear they are trying to be important?

Well people are more than just fans. People are fans of professional teams, college athletics for alums goes past that. The fact that at Charlotte you can give $1500 and be considered a big time donor, the fact that the AD knows your name, the football coach remembers you - things like that mean that many people here don’t feel like just fans. It feels like a family. Most of that is because our fan base is so small. There just are not many of us who are between 20-45 who travel to away games, pre-game, post-game, tailgate, etc. We see the same people over and over. It isn’t being cliqish or exclusive - there just isnt many of us.
As for social media - I don’t know if it is self importance. I didn’t have facebook until the Normbulance came along. It is just the way people communicate now. I don’t like it much because it is too public for me, but thats the norm now.
If anything you should be happy that there is a group of people who love this university so much that they do everything they can do support what is happening. Be it football, the soccer team or something else. If someone feels self important about it or some air of being exclusive, thats on them.
My main point is rather than hounding the few people who feel like they are more important because they do or have done X. You should be using all that emotion against all the alum and students who don’t care at all. What is worse an alum who feels self important because they went to Hoover AL with a car full of message board people or the alum who didn’t know our soccer team was playing for a national championship?
Just think about that. If just half of our local alumni felt self important our athletics would look very different.
Sorry, I’ll try to keep that in check.

If you want it like a family you should restrict entry and charge to become part of the club. that would keep many out myself included.
It is tough to have it both ways. You may be the elite of 49er fans. But don’t expect anyone not in the 1% of Niner Nation to feel any great need to respect that.

I’d be willing to wager that there are more 30+ year olds on here than those under 30.
Anyway, I think NinerWupAss said it best, so I need to say no more.
People who are thirty are still nearly a generation away. Technology makes generations change quickly.
I lived in Japan where the parents are so different from the children.

That is fine with me. I don’t need anyone’s respect beyond any that you would give any human being. I don’t think we want it like a family - it’s just that we are so small that it is like a family. Membership requirements are just to come to games.
This is just a message board after all. I know for me I do what I do for me and for Niner Nation. If along the way I pick up some friends or fans, or the AD decides to leverage me and what I can bring so be it. I don’t do it for anyone to ooo and ahh over me or anything I do. If along the way some people do then so be it. Same with the GTG - so some fans love the Niners so much that they create a blog and actually do dirty work trying to get a scoop for us. They are doing it for the good of Niner Nation. They are not trying to get anyone to ooh and ahh over them but they can’t control it if people put them on some other level of fans because they have.
I just think you are fighting the wrong fight. Could the board be more welcoming - sure it could be and I think it should be. People here have a tendency to jump on new folks. Part of that is because we suck and we don’t have visitors from other boards to rag on anymore.
Overall the board has done some wonderful things, things that are probably blown up to be bigger than they were, but so what. Let the legend of NNN grow. You should spend more time celebrating that people still care and less about who those people are.

I just think you are seeing a problem that isn’t there. I don’t see anyone gloating about their connection to the team/university/whatever. It sounds more grumpy than stodgy.
The closest thing I see is people posting bogus breaking news because they want some notoriety; but bona fide breaking news does get posted here too because we have folks who follow stuff closely and the news doesn’t give a crap about us. It’s about being a fan, not self importance.
The biggest testament to fan self importance ever.

But I see no reason why people can’t come on here and say their piece without having a rugby scrum on top of them. It takes a great strength of character to keep coming back to a place where people don’t like you. I know I rode the Tokyo subway for years as a 6’ 2" white guy.
If people are attacked for not toeing the line they will just not come back and the board will become the fraternity those hundred would like it to be.
