Can’t imagine Lutz being here much longer. Who do you guys realistically want in the offseason? Could you guys pick off Marshall at Winthrop (that’s his name, right?)
I somewhat doubt Marshall would leave Winthrop to come to Charlotte. At this point it seems like a lateral move or worse.
That really shows how far we have dropped when leaving Wintrop for Charlotte is considered a lateral move.
Matt Doherty would be a good candidate. He is a great recruiter and we are badly in need of impact players. The trouble is Doherty would just use us as a stepping stone to a job in an elite conference.
Nolan Richardson.
Fired from Arkansas a few years ago; Won the NCAA championship in 94’ and I believe had a very successful career besides his racial outcasting. He would be on my list as would be ex-hornets coach Paul Silas.

the question is, who would want our job? I honestly doubt anyone besides Pat Summit would work for Judy.

Matt Doherty, Bob McKillop (no reason not to make a push even though it’s a long shot), Steve Lavin, Wojo, any of the UNC assistants (Joe Holladay and McGrath are both really good, and Steve Robinson has head coaching experience at FSU).
WHAT I DON’T WANT
-someone who was successful HC below D1 level - see Wissel & Lutz
-someone who passionately loves their alma mater - see Lutz
-someone who the current coaching staff’s tree - see Lutz, Moxley, Moss, Cheeks, Kummer, Nickleberry, etc.
-someone whos never coached D1 hoops, but is well known name - see Mullins…granted, it worked once…but the odds for another positive experience are slim IMO
WHAT I WANT
-someone who has played ball at a D1 “top 50 school” and has been, at least, an asst for 3 years or more at a D1 “top 50 school”. Also, it would be nice if (as coach or player) his team had success (defined as getting out of the opening weekend) in the NCAA’s. If he talks about making the tournament is an accomplishment, I will NOT buy tickets. Winning the tournament requires a lot of skill AND luck. Winning games in the tournament DOES NOT require luck. Hanging banners for tourney appearances is bogus. The appearances can be gathered on one single banner.
WHAT I EXPECT TO GET
another season of Lutz
OR
some unknown who played NAIA ball and/or was an Asst. Coach and I’ll be told really “deserves a chance at this level”
OR
something really stupid like Pat Summit or Judy herself coaching the team.
Matt Doherty, Bob McKillop (no reason not to make a push even though it's a long shot), Steve Lavin, Wojo, any of the UNC assistants (Joe Holladay and McGrath are both really good, and Steve Robinson has head coaching experience at FSU).
McKillop would never come here. No reason for him to. He gets paid a ton of money and coaches under very little pressure. He’ll continue to do so until he calls it quits and takes on an Administrative role. If either Lavin or Wojo come here, I’ll officially end my string of annual season ticket orders. I know the masses here hate Doherty only because he’s a Tarhole but he was at the top of my list when Lutz was rumored for UT and I’d still love to have him. I couldn’t care less where his degree is from if he can create a buzz, bring in solid recruits and win games. But Judy will never hire him so it’s not worth discussing. I’ll pass on Marshall simply because of his personality…just don’t like the guy beyond his coaching abilities.
It’s just a bad time to try to sell this job. The program itself, along with the conference just isn’t incredibly appealing so it’s going to be really hard to bring in someone worthwhile. The problems are these: One, we can’t afford to bring in a proven, star-power coach to instantly right the ship. And two, if we go after an up-and-coming guy, he’ll go to a bigger program as soon as he has success here. That basically leaves us with having to “stay in the family” which I no longer find the least bit appealing unless Melvin came back. And even with him, it’s not my ideal situation but my preference if we go with an alum.
Matt Doherty would not consider leaving Southern Methodist (6-1 vs nobodies) and Conference USA after one season. They are opening a new $13 million practice facility next fall. He worked for zero dollars at Florida Atlantic last year once the buyout was done (he paid it, not SMU). His salary currently is $400,000, up from $171,000 at FAU.

THATS A GREAT CHOICE. HE DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE AND IS A PROVEN RECRUITER, EVEN A LITTLE SCANDALOUS WITH THE JUCO STUFF… BUT WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE? HE MADE SOME BIG MISTAKES, BUT HE WAS A TOP TEN COACH FOR A WHILE
I won’t buy season tickets next year if Lutz is still around. I know my money for upper season tickets isn’t a ton, but I’m sure I won’t be the only person.
I graduated from UNCC in 2001 and my parents in 1971 and 1972. It’s in my family’s blood, but there is no way in hell I waste more money.
Like my dad said the other day when we were discussing the season and going to any more of the games, “What’s worse? Wasting time of wasting money?” We both answered, "Wasting time . . . and that’s what it is watching the 9ers right now.
this one is easy;
Butch Pierre, asst coach LSU
Sorry, no dohertys, lojo’s, buzz, or other acc knock-off, will not happen here. Question, Where are the better coaches right now, SEC or ACC ?
Butch wasn’t here long enough to get known by the masses. But he’s a damn fine coach and recruiter.
Butch Pierre would be a good fit, I think Wojo would work well, McKillop would too but he ain’t coming.
I hope Bobby pulls off a 15 game winning streak and keeps his job, but it doesn’t look likely.

go do your own research and see what you hear-
if you know the right people to talk to.
the word has spread like wild fire from former coaches and assistants, and the current ones, that this is not a place that takes winning and athletics seriously. Heck, the women’s volleyball schedule trumps men’s hoops apparently.
stay in denial if you wish.
my point is, it will be tough to get someone legit if we ever searched for a replacement. There may be a diamond in the rough out there who’d work cheap, and roll the dice here.
Judy must go before we get a new bball coach, that is the bottom line.
Cliff Ellis
Jeff Lebo
Buzz Petersen
Jerry Tarkanian (hey, he won didn’t he?)
Melvin Watkins
Quinn Snyder (as much as I hate that little b****)

Please God no retreads. I think that hiring a coach that failed at other schools is the worst way to go. All of these guys would be retreads except Lebo who is currently at Auburn and would be a blubbering idiot to come here.
Especially not Watkins. He failed at Texas A&M. Gillespie turned the team around in 3 years and has them in the top 10. He managed to win some here, but they weren’t much better than Bobby’s teams. If we’re going for a new coach, go for a home run not for a single.

I haven’t even finished reading through this thread, but had to respond to this post Joe. You are sounding like KSU fans when they were getting Huggins. I don’t know much about Nolan, but I’m pretty sure Judy would stay away from previous scandals and such. I agree with 49erFan.

Two things to realize… I really do not see that a coach change will be beneficial with Judy in current position. And y’all are forgetting that Lutz is in a contract. From what I remember, I believe it was extended for 8 years in 2004. Charlotte will not pay out his contract to switch because he has not done anything so bad that it’s worth the money. And from that whole Tennessee thing in 2004, I don’t see Lutz going anywhere. So please, y’all that are already lining up an interview schedule, please tell me first how the position will become vacant.
Lutz isn’t going anywhere, get used to it. BTW, Charlotte would not be a lateral move for Gregg Marshall. It would be a move up. That’s like saying Bruce Pearl going to UT was a step down. Just because we are down now does not mean we a shitty place to go coach.
I don’t konw what the rumors are about our “committment to winning”, but this is a job I dare say some people would jump at. Maybe not Marshall because he can probably go higher, but a guy like Peterson who is at Coastal Carolina and aspires to more, this would be a good next step.
I personnally don’t have a problem with this being a stepping stone job for some people. It tends to keep them hunger instead of becoming fat and happy. Never hurt Tulsa or Xavier much.
