Student Secction Solution
- Where would the media (radio,TV, and newspaper) folks be placed if the benches are moved to the alumni side? You can’t put them on the student side because of the risers and because it would be too loud.

 • Where do you then put the visiting team’s comp tickets? They could still go behind the bench, but that would displace some current season ticket holders to the other side, or farther back from the floor. Could lead to some issues with the paying customers not happy about having to give up their seats.

 • If 4500 tickets still have to be provided to the students, where are you going to put the rest of the seats now that a) you’ve got alumni in the top 5 rows of the lower level of the student section and b ) the TV cameras will likely take up another 30-45 seats in the upper level of the student section since the benches have been moved across the court?
The media issue is not that big of a deal. Many schools these days are selling the front row on the court at PREMIUM prices. There is no press row other than for the TV crew. The media are given a section on risers in one of the end zones. Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Wake Forest do that.

Comp tickets shouldn’t be an issue. Depending on contracts, you’re looking at most 75 seats, which would be 5 rows of 122 or most of 123, like they get in 102 now.

The TV booth could stay where it is. It would make for a less than stellar production (ie: Duke and Vanderbilt) but not a problem. Duke had the $$$ to build a camera stand on the opposite side for one camera so you could see the benches.

An idea the students wouldn’t want to hear is but risers in the end zones and far more would be on the lower level. I had no idea the end zones at Duke held so many people and more than they hold would be in Halton, freeing up many seats.

Is it required that the cameras face the benches?

Joe, what’s that all about? We’re just tossing s*** around…
Don’t know if it’s “required”, but you don’t want to have to get shots of the coach from the floor level all the time. There are some arenas that have the main cameras on the same side as the bench, but they also have one positioned somewhere opposite the benches to show the coaches/bench when needed. That onw would have to be placed on the track or somewhere in the upper level.
That sounds manageable. As far as access to the student section goes, I don’t think it would be too difficult to build a ramp or set of stairs at each end to connect the aisle at the end of 102 and 106 to the new “pit”

…and I LOVE it.

edit: another idea for pit entrance could be a separate entrance alltogether. Could students not enter through the lower level loading dock area? From what I remember, it is pretty much a straight shot to the ‘elephant door’ as I believe it was called.

Maybe show up with a student ticket at that door, the first ever-how-many passes are available are handed out first-come, first-served, anybody else can go around and use their student ticket for upper level GA?

Just another thought. Sure would be nice if any of these ideas, many of which I think would greatly help the atmosphere of Halton Arena, had the ability to make it off of the board and in to the AD.

Get 'er done HP. Sounds like it would be easier than I thought. I’m assuming that we have room to store the risers in the bowels of Halton when they need to be moved and that the LED board divider would remain where it is on the student side?

Yes, I’d leave the board there for revenue purposes, good advertisement for TV games.

We all could use a ginger.

I agree there are good ideas here, but then the question becomes how if at all could we actually talk about implementing them? Its possible to change anything at a college if you can get a lot of people on board, petitions etc, but most people talk and dont act…

All you have to do is just kick out the quiet ones, & replace them with those who’ll yell & stand up!
Like I said on the other board, have security escort the quiet 1’s out of the lower deck to the upper deck, & replace them with those who are loud.

 1. Lots of fanbases have been complaining about their student section this year. Some of the Wake alumns actually proposed moving their student section to the upstairs end zone because the students are not filling up their section and are not making as much noise as they used to.

 2. Our students have it made. Many other schools now put their students in the end zone, thus freeing up both sides of the court for those revenue producing seat.

 3. If we had beaten Duquesne and/or led most of the game against Xavier, the students would have made more noise.

 4. The giveaway about how quiet the students were on Saturday came after the technical foul. I was expecting a loud chorus of boos, and instead all we heard was a wimper.

 5. Students, when we are down 8 with 8 minutes remaining in the game, it is not time to leave. This complaint also goes out to some non-students.

Section 105 should be made a student section. That way more students are in the lower section, and it would become much louder. Majority of big-time universities have an all student lower section.

???

105 is part of the student section right? Or did I miss something. Lew isnt 105 in the student section?

Yes, it is. I can only assume that he meant 103, which is directly behind the visitor’s bench.

Those seats used to be student seats, but then a couple of good apples had to spoil it for everybody else by making a few Cincinnati players cry to their mothers.

Yeah, I did mean 103. It’s unfortunate that section had to go…

yep I agree

If you look at it, on the sidelines, the seating starts out below the court.

Being a young alumni season ticket holder. I see a large amount of young alum that would love to get rowdy on the lower level. There should be a section alotted to young alum season ticket holders. This may even increase sales for the ticket office.

All things equal, I’d rather long time season ticket holders like HP and others get the lower level seats before myself as a young alumni. (Of course unless I spontaneously donated $10k or something  )

Yup-I actually saw on facebook the other day a facebook group that said “students who stay for the entire Carolina game.” Group basically was criticizing students who left Carolina home game’s early. Every student section gets attacked by alum’s.

I think our students need to realize how lucky they are to have the seats they do have. The only other school I know who gives students such good seats is Duke.

OK Well after reading through this thread I have afew suggestions.

1 - The students deserve the whole side. With the exception of maybe 3 rows behind the visitors bench that entire side should be students. Giving those tickets to alumni will create the Dean Dome effect in Halton and i don’t think any of us want that. As much as I would LOVE to be down there I don’t trust my fellow alumni to make proper use of those seats.

2 - I like the suggestion of long bleachers. That is what they have in Cameron. I am not sure from a safety point of view that is viable, but I like how that would force ALL students to stand.

3 - As for coordinating chants/cheers - the students need to ID 6-10 leaders. Lew in the middle of 104 writes on his wipe board the cheer - flashes it to a leader in front of 105 who writes it on their wipe board for 105 to see. For games like sat have leaders at the top of each section to coordinate with the upper deck.

4 - PLEASE atleast twice a game put the words to the fight song on the score board. Saturday was a perfect example of having alums back who do not know the fight song and they would love to learn it. I told 2 alums the words sat.

5 - How hard would it be to also have a page in the program that goes over standard chants and when we would typically use them.
